Gregg County: Sabine Fire and Rescue plans for 24/7 operation with new $3M station VIDEO: Sabine Fire and Rescue is preparing for a 24/7 operation with construction of a $3.4 million station in September. The station, once a small volunteer department, will use the new 10-thousand-square-foot facility to house the additional manpower, trucks, and equipment needed for the switch to full time. Construction is set to begin with a public groundbreaking ceremony on September 7 and see completion by September 2025. Fire Chief Richard Sisk said the changes have been in motion since 2014 when they first gathered support from the community. "This is a wonderful, wonderful thing," Sisk said. "It's going to transition us into the future and deliver on those promises we made when we campaigned for that tax money." KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Austin Energy launches AI wildfire detection system, enhancing regional safety VIDEO: Austin Energy unveiled its advanced AI-driven early wildfire detection system. The system marks a significant step forward in enhancing wildfire response capabilities in Austin and surrounding areas. The Pano AI system uses 13 ultra high-definition 360 cameras, artificial intelligence, and real-time data monitoring that quickly detect and verify potential wildfires. When a fire is detected in the system, it automatically notifies Austin Energy and local fire departments with precise locations and real-time images. "Wildfires as you've heard are an escalating threat and as the conditions get hotter, conditions get dryer," said Ben Hanson, North American Sales Vice President at Pano AI. "The early detection of smoke becomes more crucial than it's ever been before." KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Strengthening Ties: Goodfellow Air Force Base and San Angelo Fire Department conduct HAZMAT exercise PHOTOS: Goodfellow Air Force Base worked with the San Angelo Fire Department in a no-notice hazardous material drill, Aug. 27. The drill tested the interoperability and emergency response capabilities of the Civil Support Team. The team rapidly responded to a simulated biological event and worked seamlessly with local agencies to mitigate the situation. "It's important to practice how you play," said Stacy Wright, San Angelo Fire Department Battalion Chief. "If we never work together, then we can't work out the discrepancies beforehand. This exercise helped us to see where we needed to improve as a team and how we can make things better for the future." The exercise involved a simulated biological release, as the HAZMAT response team for Goodfellow and San Angelo, the 17th Civil Engineer Squadron, was a part of the initial team to respond to the scene. VIDEOS: Looking back at massive 1997 Indiana tire fire As a massive plume of black smoke permeated the sky above Fort Wayne Wednesday, the blaze reminded some of a historic fire that happened in southeast Fort Wayne nearly 27 years ago. On Aug. 30, 1997, a fire broke out at an abandoned tire warehouse on Bowser Avenue in southeast Fort Wayne. The fire happened less than a mile from Wednesday's fire at the intersection of Wayne Trace and New Haven Avenue. The Bowser Avenue blaze started after a suspected arsonist set a building on fire that was housing at least 500,000 tires. John McGauley, the court executive for Allen Superior Court who covered the fire in 1997 as a reporter for The News-Sentinel, remembered the site had been widely recognized as a hazard for years due to the amount of tires being stored and the dilapidated state of the building. WANE-TV CBS 15 FORT WAYNE Kansas top five in nation for arson fires A national report indicates Kansas is one of the leading states for arson incidents. Last year, there were 5,440 arson incident reports made to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Kansas made up 6% of the nation's arson reports with 307 cases. Kansas had the fifth most cases of incendiary fires in the U.S. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there were 293,396 fire reports in Kansas in 2023. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) keeps track of the number of arson cases in Kansas. The bureau reports a downtrend in cases since 2020. Arson cases have steadily decreased in number from a peak of 574. The highest number of cases in the last decade happened in 2015 when there were 653 cases. According to the Topeka Fire Department, the City of Topeka investigated 44 arson fires in 2023. KSNT-TV NBC 27 TOPEKA 'Extreme makeover' underway to convert RV dealership into new fire station in Nevada VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Henderson Fire Department traded in fire hoses for sledgehammers this week. The department kicked off the "extreme makeover" of a former motorhome dealership into a new fire station for the city. Henderson announced back in the fall that the city purchased the former Camping World property on Boulder Highway near Racetrack Road, intending to convert it into the new Fire Station 81. City officials held a ceremonial wall knockdown on Wednesday to commemorate the start of construction. The 4.4-acre site will have three extra-long bays to house fire engines. The grounds will be able to accommodate 12 firefighters and a battalion chief, plus 10,000 square feet of warehouse space. Henderson said converting the building is more cost-effective than building from the ground up. KSNV-TV NBC 3 LAS VEGAS How the University of Arizona and Tucson Fire Dept. are measuring toxic chemicals in firefighters across the country VIDEO: Tucson Fire Department and the University of Arizona have been partnering for nearly a decade to study just how much a firefighter's job increases their risk for serious health issues, like cancer. Their research has led to nationwide safety changes in the firefighting industry and the recognition of more cancers presumed to be caused on the job. Researchers have previously found that firefighters tend to have about 20% higher levels of toxic PFAS chemicals, or "forever chemicals," in their systems. That's according to Dr. Jeff Burgess, a professor at the UA's Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. In one of roughly a dozen studies that have started as part of the 30-year Fire Fighter Cancer Cohort Study (FFCCS) that kicked off in 2016, UA researchers are studying those PFAS levels in firefighters, what causes those elevated numbers, and potential ways to reduce PFAS levels. KGUN-TV ABC 9 TUCSON Ford F-150 Driver Rescued By Ohio Fire Department After Getting Stuck 10 Feet In The Air PHOTOS: There are many reasons why you might want to call the fire department. Your house might be on fire, or a petrol tanker may have just overturned. Or, like this one driver of a Ford F-150, you might be stuck 10 feet in the air and in serious need of rescue. This came to our attention thanks to a Facebook post from Station 41 of the Wolfhurst Fire Department in Bridgeport, Ohio. The agency readily admits it doesn't often post about incidents that it responds to, but this one was simply too noteworthy to ignore. It all went down on the evening of August 25. The fire department was called to a vehicular accident, wherein a Ford truck had somehow wound up stuck 10 feet in the air. The driver was inside, unharmed, but unable to get down as the vehicle was incredibly unstable. The job for the fire crew? Steady the truck so the driver could climb to safety.
