The Port Lavaca Wave reported the fatality Friday morning. The name of the person who died has not been released by authorities. Details shared so far describe the deceased person as a man who was living at the resident. At least one dog was also injured by the fire. The fire was contained by 10 p.m. Friday to the building where it started. CROSSROADS TODAY First responders shorten response times in rural Jim Wells County Over the last decade, Jim Wells County has seen an increase in the need for emergency services. Crashes such as Wednesday's on State Hwy. 44 near Alice are part of the reason non-profit HALO-Flight set up a base in Alice more than 10 years ago. HALO-Flight interim CEO and chief flight nurse Randal Endsley told 3NEWS the group responds to an average of three calls for emergency flights a day. "The farther away the incident is, the more valuable the helicopter becomes," he said. "Back before 2012, what you would see is the helicopter starting in Corpus Christi, being called out to the Jim Wells area, having to make that trek out there, pick up that patient and then bring them back to the Corpus Christi area." KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Firefighters have trouble navigating San Antonio apartment with ‘too much stuff' in it Three adults and an infant all are looking for a place to stay temporarily after a fire broke out in their apartment building just north of downtown on Thursday morning. More than a dozen fire trucks raced to the 400 block of W. Magnolia just before 7 a.m. Battalion chief Andrew Frawley says crews found fire coming from a first floor apartment that appeared to be unoccupied but was cluttered with items. "We were trying to find the cause, but at this point, we don't know," he said. "There's too much stuff in there. They're having to go through too many layers of debris." Frawley said four people who were in the building at the time all managed to escape safely. Monica Sutton, who was among them, said she feels lucky that she and her husband happened to be awake at the time. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Lake Jackson Assistant Fire Chief rescues neighbor's pet from fire A fire call came too close to home for Lake Jackson Assistant Fire Chief Jason McCain. At about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, a 911 call reported heavy smoke from the roof of a home in the 200 block of Arrowhead Street. McCain, who lives in a neighboring house, arrived at the fire within two minutes of the call, Fire Chief Tyler Harper said. "I heard the address, came outside and saw the smoke. I did what we call a 360 walk around outside to see what I could see outside. There was smoke coming from the area of one of the chimneys," McCain said. He next made sure his neighbors were safe, he said. "I came around front and called their names. They're my neighbors so I know them. I called their names. No one answered," McCain said. THE FACTS Family involved in carbon monoxide incident was running car in garage to keep warm, ATCEMS says Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) and the Austin Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide exposure call Thursday night that resulted in three people being taken to hospitals, including a child and a teenager. According to a tweet from ATCEMS at around 10:40 p.m., both medics and firefighters responded to a "multi-patient carbon monoxide exposure incident," where eight people were exposed to carbon monoxide. Among the eight people, six were adults, one was a teenager and the other was a child. Three of the eight patients were transported to hospitals. ATCEMS said that two of the patients – one adult and the child – had serious, potentially life-threatening symptoms. Both of those patients were airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio because they had serious carbon monoxide symptoms requiring hyperbaric oxygen treatment. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN 13 displaced after house fire in North Lubbock 11 adults and two children are displaced after a house fire in North Lubbock Thursday night. Just before 9:30 p.m., firefighters were called to a single story multi-residential structure near 3rd and Ave. T. Crews arrived to find the structure with heavy flames showing at the back of the house. A small wood shed engulfed in flames spread to the main residence, according to LFR. All residents were able to escape safely and no injuries were reported. LFR says the structure sustained heavy smoke damage inside and was damaged 20% overall. The Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Large fire destroys American Legion in Illinois VIDEO/PHOTOS: A large fire broke out Thursday morning at the American Legion post in New Haven, Illinois. Post 1141 shared photos of blaze, which appear to have destroyed the building. Their caption just says "No words!!!" Many residents shared comments with memories. "My parent met there," said Melissa Blake Kittinger. "It is a sad day for New Haven and this whole area! My dad and I played pool there every Sunday. We hope they will be able to rebuild. It was as much a community center as it was an American Legion Post," said Wade Atteberry. "In New Haven, Illinois, a gaping hole on the hill where American Legion Post 1141 once stood. Inside the burned out building remains pieces of the Legion's history, but for some it's more than memorabilia items. The once polished and waxed hardwood floor was where some of the young generations learned to walk, spent many hours laughing, playing with ketchup smeared smiles as families gathered," said Terri Buckman Stallings." WFIE-TV NBC 14 EVANSVILLE Decade after 'Good Friday miracle' jet crash, Virginia firefighters grapple with cancer diagnoses At age 44, there are days when Virginia Beach Fire Captain Matt Chiaverotti doesn't have the energy to pick himself up from his recliner that sits by his living room window. Cancer is making him weak. On Aug. 23 of last year, he got a grim diagnosis: late-stage anaplastic thyroid cancer, a rare disease making up 1% to 2% of thyroid cancer cases. "It started in my thyroid [and] looked like it spread to my lungs and other spots," Chiaverotti said. "They ended up finding it days later in my brain." He is not alone. Four other Virginia Beach firefighters are currently battling or recently battled cancer. All five worked what has been dubbed the "Good Friday Miracle," a Navy FA-18 jet crash nearly 11 years ago into the Mayfair Mews Apartments on Good Friday 2012. It's called a miracle because no one perished in the fiery collision that demolished the complex. WVEC-TV ABC 13 HAMPTON Pennsylvania fire crews speak on growing problems of false alarms We all hear and see them in our community virtually every day, fire trucks and first responders responding to fire calls. Many times, those calls turn out to be false alarms and fire officials across the nation and our region say they have seen the number of false alarms increasing and that's creating an unnecessary risk to the public and first responders. Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney is one of the chiefs in our region and Pennsylvania sounding the alarm and trying taking action to try to reduce the numbers and reduce the risk to the public and first responders. "At least two million across the United States every year. Here in Wilkes-Barre in the year 2021, we had 577 false alarms," said Chief Delaney. Chief Delaney says that 577 times that the public and first responders were unnecessarily placed at risk. WBRE-TV NBC 28 WILKES-BARRE Follow Up: FDNY lieutenant thanks fallen firefighter William Moon's widow for life-saving organ An FDNY lieutenant received a life-saving lung transplant from fallen firefighter William "Billy" Moon — and, in a heartfelt tribute from his hospital bed, thanked the hero's widow for donating her late husband's organs. Lt. Terrence Jordan is among five people — and two members of New York's Bravest — to whom Moon's organs were donated after the 47-year-old dad of two died during a training accident at his Brooklyn firehouse in December. In an exclusive report set to air on "NBC Nightly News" Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET, Jordan told Moon's widow, Kristina, that he feels 30 years younger after coming out of surgery with a new pair of healthy lungs. "We just wanted to say that we think you're an incredible person and thank you so much," Jordan told Kristina Moon from the hospital, with his wife by his side. NEW YORK POST - METERED SITE Texas fire truck stolen from motel as its crew treated patient, department says VIDEO: A Fort Worth Fire Department truck was stolen on Wednesday night in south Fort Worth while the members of its crew were treating a patient, the department said. A person purloined Engine 17 from the Delux Inn near South Freeway and East Seminary Drive. Its crew arrived at the motel at 7:42 p.m. and began to treat a medical problem, a fire department spokesperson said. Nine minutes later, someone entered the motel lobby and told the firefighters that their truck had just been stolen. The crew stepped outside and watched as the engine was driven away. They requested police. The fire department spokesperson did not answer a question that asked by what method the suspect accessed the apparatus. The truck was taken out of service while an investigation is underway. The crew of Engine 17 will work from a reserve apparatus. The fire department was working with police to investigate the theft.
