The Midland Fire Department has announced the addition of EMS 4 at Station 4, located at 5100 N. Big Spring St. By adding this full-time unit, the MFD accomplishes several things. This will provide quicker EMS response to the citizens in District 4. According to a Facebook post, all MFD personnel are cross trained for fire and EMS, so this will allow for an initial five-man response to fire calls in District 4. Engine 4 will be staffed with three personnel and EMS 4 with two personnel. This also allows units that had covered District 4 to be more readily available to cover their respective districts. In 2023, there were 1,126 EMS calls in this district. Those calls were covered by all seven other frontline units. EMS 3 and EMS 8 covered most of these.

Corpus Christi Fire Department responded to an apartment fire around 7 p.m. Thursday at the old Regency Square Apartments, now known as the Aventine Apartments on Fort Worth Street near Driscoll Children's Hospital. Firefighters on the scene say it took them about 20 minutes to put out the flames. Officials say no one was hurt, but some pets were reported missing. The call for help came from a delivery driver who was dropping something off and saw flames coming from the second story of the apartment. CCFD Assistant Fire Chief Billy Belyeu said by the time first responders arrived, most residents had already evacuated. "Yeah most of the residents had evacuated already," Belyeu said. "There were residents on the opposite side of the structure that we did evacuate just in case it did extend."

A home caught on fire on the West side after the family heard a pop noise. According to the San Antonio Fire Department, the incident happened near the 9300 block of Pottesgrove around noon on Thursday. When officials arrived, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames on the right side front of the house, primarily in what appeared to be an addition, serving as a master bedroom and bathroom. The homeowners, who were present during the incident, reported hearing a pop before noticing the fire. Firefighters efficiently contained the blaze to the affected room and a section of the attic. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. Investigators were leaning toward ruling the incident as an accidental electrical fire. The HVAC unit in the attic is suspected to be the source of the fire.

A massive fire has been burning for hours at a warehouse in Elizabeth, New Jersey, sending smoke into the sky that can be seen for miles. More than 100 firefighters are working to get the flames under control, but officials say the blaze could burn into the weekend. "We're going to be here for many hours today, if not days, fighting this fire," Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage explained. "This fire is going to burn out from the outside, there's no way that we can get firefighters inside the building." The fire broke out early Friday morning at the Elizabeth Industrial Park on Trumbull Street. It's located along the city's waterfront near the Mills at Jersey Gardens mall and Newark Liberty International Airport. Authorities said a passerby spotted the fire and called for help around 5:30 a.m. The flames quickly spread, causing part of the building to collapse.

PHOTO: The start of the NFL season usually brings fans a mix of excitement and hope. Hope remained in Arizona Cardinals fans as the team walked off the field with a 13-10 halftime lead Week 1 at Washington. As the Cardinals began their walk to the visitors' locker room, fans at home watching the game saw the score flash across the bottom of the screen as a silver firefighter's helmet decorated in honor of Arizona's NFL franchise sat on the field. Duane Schuman's phone began to buzz. Message after message came rolling in on the retired firefighter and mega Cardinals fan's iPhone, all with the same general note: Hey! We saw your helmet on TV when we were watching the game! "The NFL Network for the halftime had asked if they could borrow my helmet," Schuman said. "And they took it down to the field."

Firefighting is a strenuous and stressful job. The post-traumatic stress disorder rate among firefighters is estimated to be higher than the rate in the military. As of Jan. 1, there is a state law in Tennessee that can help firefighters get better while still getting paid. The James "Dustin" Samples Act honors Samples, a Cleveland, Tennessee firefighter who bravely fought PTSD on the job. When he took his own life in 2020, his department and his family took action. Last year, legislation was passed that establishes the presumption that PTSD is a work-related injury for firefighters. It also creates a grant to help employers cover the cost of subsequent workers' compensation claims. "During my career, we didn't have this available to us, and it was basically do your job and be quiet," said Danny Yates, president of the Nashville Firefighters Association.

Close to 50,000 massage guns sold in the United States have been recalled due to fire and burn hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Thursday. The recall involves Homedics' "Therapist Select Percussion Personal Massagers," which can overheat while charging. The CPSC said there have been 17 reports of the massage guns overheating, with one report of a consumer suffering a burnt thumb. There are about 46,000 units included in the recall, along with the roughly 41,000 that were sold in Canada. The recalled massagers have a model number of HHP-715 and only those with a manufacturing date through the end of 2022 are included in the recall. The manufacturing date is represented by a date code located on a sticker on the underside of the product's barrel.
