Waco fire crews request extra gear to protect against health hazards Firefighters who help keep our community safe, are pushing for help to take care of their own. This as a short supply of gear is causing many firefighters in Waco to be exposed to dangerous conditions. "We're going to be exposed to things that others are not and it's a risk that we're willing to take to protect those that we're here to serve. But the last 20 years we've been studying how cancer affects firefighters and it consistently is the number one killer of firefighters every year," says Philip Burnett, the Training Captain with the Waco Fire Department. Fires are known to leave debris and other carcinogens on gear until it goes through a special extractor wash. "The repetition of it, you just know where everything is. Just throwing it on making sure you have everything from every call. The gear after a fire it smells it's nasty it's wet," says Waco Fire Fighter, Paul Gilmore. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Arlington firefighter died on vacation in Mexico; department mourns his loss The Arlington Fire Department is mourning the loss of a firefighter. Elijah B. Snow, 35, was on vacation at a Cancun resort in Mexico when he died, according to Fire Chief Don Crowson. Snow spent eight years working for the City of Arlington and was promoted to be an apparatus operator in August. "He was an outstanding firefighter as well as a dedicated public servant," Crowson said. "The Fire Department will take all necessary steps to ensure that Elijah's family is properly supported throughout this difficult time." Snow was the son of a fallen Arlington firefighter, Ronnie Snow, who died in the line of duty in 1985. A visitation will be held for Snow on Monday, July 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Rush Creek Church. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Crews stand down after underground propane leak in downtown Waco area contained A major underground propane leak in the downtown Waco area that drew a major response has been contained, fire officials say, and firefighters have completed an extensive sweep of the area to make sure no pockets of the heavier-than-air gas have accumulated in underground conduits or the basements of several nearby buildings including Balcones Distilling. Crews cleared the scene at around 2 p.m. Thursday, more than fours after they were dispatched. Firefighters responded just after 9:30 a.m. to a report of a gas odor in the 300 block of South 11th Street, hazmat crews responded six minutes later, and the leak wax contained at around 10:30 a.m., fire officials said. The leak appears to have occurred on the site of a tall telephone tower, at the base of which propane tanks were visible. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Houston ambulance carjacked at gunpoint with EMT and patient in the back, police say A man with a gun carjacked a Houston Fire Department ambulance with an EMT and a patient still inside early Friday, police said. The incident happened around 3 a.m. near the 610 West Loop and Beechnut, in the Meyerland area. HFD Chief Samuel Peña said an EMT was driving the ambulance with a patient and another EMT in the back. As they were transporting the patient, an armed man firing shots forced the vehicle to stop. He pointed a gun at the EMT who was driving and took over the vehicle. The suspect then sped away, leaving that EMT on the side of the road. Peña said in the back of the ambulance, the remaining EMT knew something was not right because they were no longer heading in the right direction. She looked through the window from the rear into the cab and saw someone else was driving. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Teen electrocuted in Montgomery County thanks first responders who saved his life A 17-year-old, who is lucky to be alive after being electrocuted, was able to thank the first responders who saved his life. "It was just, you do what you do. You just go into action. When it's your own child or grandchild ... children are special, but grandchildren are extremely special. I wasn't going to let him go." WJHL-TV CBS/ABC 11 JOHNSON CITY Virginia fire department adds $1 million 'Swiss Army knife' of rescue vehicles to fleet VIDEO: Resort City firefighters say if a building collapse similar to the June disaster in Surfside, Florida were to happen here, they're now better prepared to respond. In the last six weeks, the Virginia Beach Fire Department added two identical vehicles, called rescue companies, to its fleet. The vehicles are designed to respond to fire entrapments, vehicle entrapments, water rescues and building collapses, among other emergencies. "It's the Swiss Army knife of vehicles," said Capt. Jon Rigolo, a 38-year veteran of the department who works on the Technical Rescue team at Fire Station 7, near the Virginia Beach Town Center. Also described as a "big toolbox," Capt. Rigolo says the roughly $1 million vehicles were specifically designed with Virginia Beach firefighters in mind, a process that took about two years. WTKR-TV CBS 3 NORFOLK New mural on building in Arizona honors legacy of former fire chief PHOTOS: Former Phoenix Fire Chief Alan Brunacini has influenced tens of thousands of firefighters around the world. A mural painted on the side of a building in downtown Phoenix on Osborn Road just before 7th Street will honor the life and legacy of Brunacini, who served as the city's fire chief from 1978 to 2006. The mural features a firefighter wearing bright yellow turnouts working on a fire hydrant with hundreds of feet of yellow fire hose painted along the base of the building. The hose leads to the "Charlie" side of the building, which is fire lingo for the back of the structure. That's where you get a full visual of the legacy and personality of the man who was known for firefighter safety and being nice. KTAR-FM 92.3 GLENDALE Florida firefighters use new rope training for high-angle rescues VIDEO: It may look like a lot of work, but several firefighters with Orange County Fire Rescue said it takes a couple of steps when it comes to using ropes during a high-angle rescue call. On Thursday, Orange County Fire Rescue held a special operations training at the Orange County Convention Center to learn how to use a new rope that allows them to make knots faster and easier during an emergency. "We had larger diameter rope, which was heavier and harder to tie knots, so we are going to a smaller rope it's just as strong as the older ropes, so it just makes it easier. It's lighter to carry," said Lt. Ralph Astarita with OCFR Special Operations. Astarita said they have a total of 330 rope techs within the fire department but only 69 are climbers. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO Three states are seeing about 40% of the country's new COVID-19 cases VIDEO: While COVID-19 cases in the United States have been rising in almost every state over the past week, a handful have been driving the bulk of the nationwide surge. White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients told reporters Thursday the country has "fundamentally changed the course of this pandemic" and the threat of serious disease and death now is to the unvaccinated. He said counties with the highest case rates have significantly lower vaccination rates than other areas. And a few states have seen many of the new cases. "This week, just three states Florida, Texas and Missouri, three states with lower vaccination rates accounted for 40 percent of all cases nationwide," Zients said at a White House news conference.
