VIDEOS: Oil, gas drained from cars causes large fire at salvage yard in southwest Houston Oil and gas being drained from cars caused a large fire Thursday at a salvage yard in southwest Houston, firefighters said. This happened just before 11 a.m. The Houston Fire Department said oil and gas were being drained from at least four cars that were getting scrapped. During that process, a fire ignited that set off a chain reaction to smaller gas tanks, tires, batteries and other car parts. One firefighter at the scene injured their back from falling. No other people were injured. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Killeen Fire Department earns prestigious American Heart Association Gold Award for seventh consecutive year The Killeen Fire Department has been honored with the American Heart Association's Lifeline EMS Gold Achievement award. This marks the seventh consecutive year the fire department has earned this recognition. The award emphasizes the essential role of pre-hospital providers in delivering immediate on-scene treatment, a critical factor in survival rates for high-risk, time-sensitive illnesses. The Killeen Fire Department has been recognized for its ability to begin administering potentially life-saving care up to an hour earlier than if the patient were transported by a personal vehicle to the hospital. Fire Chief James Kubinski expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating "The Killeen Fire Department is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to providing optimal care for heart attack patients. The Mission: Lifeline program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, so patients have the best possible chance of survival." KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE City department says it's working to fix Austin fire truck AC issues The city says it will undertake several initiatives to reduce the number of Austin Fire Department vehicles without air conditioning in the future. In a social media post Monday, Council Member Mackenzie Kelly said there were 20 fire trucks in Austin without air conditioning "putting our brave firefighters at risk in scorching Texas heat," she said. Kelly sent a memo to Austin City Manager Jesus Garza saying it was "crucial to address these issues promptly to ensure the health and safety of our firefighters, especially during the hot summer months," the memo read. Jennifer Walls, the Director of the Fleet Mobility Services Department, submitted a memo Wednesday to the Mayor and City Council Wednesday saying Fleet Services is coordinating with AFD to repair the malfunctioning fleet while ensuring enough of the fleet remains available for community needs. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Follow-up: San Antonio Fire Department prioritizing mental health after string of deadly fires Mental health is a top priority for the San Antonio Fire Department as the number of deadly fires in the city has hit double digits this year. Twelve people have lost their lives in fires. Every scene stays with San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood. "The kind of calls that we go on are reminiscent of a bad movie, but it's real," he said. Hood said, "It's very difficult for us to see a lot of the things that we see, and then the expectation is that we get back on that truck." One of those difficult calls was on Winding Oak Drive Saturday morning. "It affected so many of us because there were kids involved," Hood said. SAFD has prioritized mental health this week, checking in after the deadliest recorded house fire in over a decade. "Somebody from peer support reached out to every known person that was at that fire scene, and we'll continue to as long as there is need," said Dr. Melissa Graham, a psychologist who runs the intensive in-house wellness program at SAFD. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Fire engine crashes, rolls over in Illinois; 4 injured VIDEO: A fire engine rolled over in a crash Thursday morning in far northwest suburban Hampshire. Around 9:40 a.m., a Hampshire Fire Protection fire engine rolled over on French Road, about a mile south of Illinois Route 72, while returning to the firehouse from a call. Three firefighters and a firefighter intern were injured in the crash. They were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin to be treated for minor injuries, according to Hampshire Fire Chief Trevor Herrmann. The crash caused diesel fuel to leak from the badly damaged fire engine, and hazardous materials crews were able to clean up the spill. The Kane County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the crash. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh testifies before Congress on dangers of lithium-ion battery fires VIDEO: FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh appeared before the Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington D.C. on Thursday to testify about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries. Just last month, the FDNY announced measures to step up inspections and enforcement efforts of bike shops and bike repair shops citywide after a shop in the Lower East Side was engulfed in flames and killed four people. That incident was caused by a lithium-ion battery. The ubiquity of these batteries, along with e-bikes and scooters, has spurred major concern - prompting Kavanagh to raise the alarm by urging the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish mandatory safety standards to help put an end to these devices from endangering homes. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Man who photographs fire departments across the Carolinas has developed strong Instagram following VIDEO: Maybe you can hear them blaring in your childhood memories. At fire departments across America, the fascination with emergency vehicles starts early. "What sound does the fire truck make?" Katherine Mathis asked her 2-year-old James, while they took a closer look at the trucks at Station No. 4 in Uptown Charlotte. "Woo-woo!" James replied, mimicking the sound of a fire engine. Once a kid gets hooked to hook and ladders and such, firefighter David Budd says you never know how their enthusiasm will grow. "It's always an informal ‘Can we see the trucks' kind of thing," Budd told Queen City News. Adam Rutland of Fort Mill, S.C., was once that boy and is now in his 20s. We met him at Station 4 on the same day little James took a tour. QUEEN CITY NEWS Emergency responders receive railway training on Norfolk Southern Safety Train in Pennsylvania VIDEO: Active railways are littered throughout south-central Pennsylvania, making the likelihood of an accident almost inevitable. To stay proactive, Norfolk Southern Railway is traveling the east coast to educate first responders on proper response strategies using its own safety train. "We take them out of the classroom and put them on the train itself," said Connor Spielmaker, the communications manager with Norfolk Southern Railway. The three-day training event is part of the company's Awareness and Response program. Several response teams from across the Commonwealth met at Norfolk Southern Railway where they began the event with an hour-long safety lesson. First responders were later given hands-on training on the commercial locomotive designed to carry hazardous material. WPMT-TV FOX 43 YORK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
