Residents out with hoses as massive 2-alarm San Antonio fire threatens nearby homes VIDEO/PHOTOS: Residents were out with water hoses spraying their homes and yards as a 2-alarm fire destroyed a nearby home and damaged a business on the Southwest Side. The fire started just before 9 p.m. along W. Southcross Boulevard and New Laredo Highway. Firefighters say an abandoned house caught fire and spread to an auto shop next door. "First crews had to go defensive," said Joe Arrington with the San Antonio Fire Department. "The fire was so heavily involved they had to fight it defensively, and realized the embers were blowing up to a block away, so we had to station crews downwind from it to make sure those small fires weren't spreading to homes." Firefighters were able to keep it from spreading any further. No injuries were reported. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Serving beyond the flames: Waco Fire's Technical Rescue Team on display at training VIDEO: You may think of firefighters as the first responders who are associated with putting out fires, showing up to crashes and your occasional cat rescues from trees. However, there is a group that takes on extra training and credentials to be able to expand their services. It's called the Technical Rescue Team and it's made up of designated rescue specialists that are able to assist in unique and unusual operations. The Waco Fire Department has many members with the credentials to help if there is a situation needing a technical rescue. The department also has designated individuals who are always on the Technical Rescue Team that operate out of Station One. Waco Fire's Technical Rescue Team are capable of responding to structural and trench collapses, and also swiftwater, confined spaces and rope rescues. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Corpus Christi first responders to receive more funding in proposed 2023 budget City Manager Peter Zanoni recently introduced the City's proposed budget for 2023. A portion of that budget will go to the City's first responders who are poised to benefit in many ways. With Corpus Christi Police and Fire Departments expanding, CCPD plans to add 25 new police officers, while CCFD also has 24 open positions across the department. Leaders of both departments said the new funding will help first responders better serve the community. "We'll be adding another medic unit, giving the Corpus Christi Fire Department 14 medic units throughout the city which will give us some great coverage, and help us out with response times," said CCFD Fire Chief Robert Rocha. While CCFD is in no short supply of firefighters, they're always looking for more help. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Follow-up: Bottle-magnified sunlight ignited paper and started a 500-acre wildfire in Palo Pinto County, officials say Sunlight magnified by glass bottles in an open garbage can ignited paper trash, starting a 500-acre North Texas wildfire that destroyed five homes, fire officials said Thursday. The July 18 fire on Possum Kingdom Lake's western shore, about 70 miles west of Fort Worth, took eight days to fully contain. Chief Bonnie Watkins of the Possum Kingdom West Side Volunteer Fire Department found a trash can packed with party trash that included paper goods, food and numerous glass bottles, according to a department statement Thursday. Watkins concluded that a wind gust opened the can lid, allowing sunlight magnified by the glass bottles to ignite the paper. The fire built rapidly until the fire spilled from the can and spread to nearby cedar trees, the statement said. NBC NEWS Henderson County fire department unveils pink truck to raise awareness about cancer PHOTO: A Henderson County fire department recently revealed their pink brush truck created to raise awareness about cancer. Bob Morris, the North 19 Fire Rescue Chief, had the idea to get the truck, and the other members of the crew agreed. The fire rescue shared pictures of their truck on July 20. The vehicle also has several decals to represent the various cancers their firefighters have battled. Some of them are currently fighting cancer or are in remission. The truck is also meant to honor those who passed away due to cancer. Fire Rescue Lieutenant Stacey Killough is a uterine cancer survivor. Stacey's husband, lieutenant Mike Killough, also battled lung cancer and won. The fire station is paying tribute to R.H. "Buck" Graham. They said he was instrumental in getting them the Graham station on CR 2709. VIDEO: All lanes of I-5 SB open after truck blast led to huge traffic jam in Seattle PHOTOS: State transportation crews have reopened all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Seattle Thursday evening after a vehicle carrying liquid oxygen caught fire and exploded, snarling traffic for motorists through the midday and afternoon commute. No injuries were reported during the incident, which resulted in the closure of both north- and southbound lanes near downtown Seattle for over an hour. Shortly before 6 p.m., state officials said on social media that there was a 4.5 mile backup on the interstate even though the westbound State Route 520 ramp to southbound I-5 was open as well as Boylston Avenue. Officials said they expected to reopen all lanes of I-5 sometime Thursday night. State transportation officials tweeted about 7:30 p.m. that the lanes had reopened. KOMO-TV ABC 4 SEATTLE PHOTOS: ‘A fire station on wheels' Tennessee fire department shows off new aerial truck If you're not one for heights, then this view may not be for you. Rural Metro Fire – Knox County gave WATE's Bo Williams an inside look at its newest and biggest addition. In June, Rural Metro added a new $1.2 million aerial truck to its fleet to serve North Knox County for the next 20 years. "This aerial is 107 feet. That's at 72 degrees," said Jeff Bagwell with Rural Metro. "It's the most expensive fire truck we've ever purchased here in Knox County, and companywide. This truck is a big truck, and as a former chief used to say, ‘it's a difference maker'." Rural Metro crews are banking on this truck being a game changer when a call goes out. "We have a 2,000 gallon per minute pump. So, this pump has the capability to pump at least another 5 to 750 gallons more than any other pump we got in the fleet," said Bagwell. One of the great features of this new truck is the cameras, allowing for 360 degree views around the vehicle. WATE-TV ABC 6 KNOXVILLE ICU nurse gets life-saving kidney transplant from Florida firefighter A Bradenton firefighter has received the county's highest honor for a firefighter after donating a kidney to a fellow firefighter's wife. As a firefighter and former Marine, Lieutenant Derek Foss is always ready to answer the call. "Make a decision as it comes in," he explained. He says he didn't need any convincing on the decision to donate a kidney after learning he was a perfect match to be a kidney donor to Brianne Baker. "Probably two weeks after I gave blood and they called and said six out of six match," he said. Brianne Baker is a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at Tampa General Hospital and her health was declining. "I had no energy, I didn't realize how much I was declining over the months," she said. As a teenager, Brianne Baker was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease. At 32, her kidneys were failing and a match needed to be a perfect fit. WTVT-TV FOX 13 TAMPA Woman leaves her $116,000 per year law job and now earns $15 an hour as a firefighter: ‘Find something that makes you feel vibrant' Nico Smith didn't want to merely make a living, but to "have a living." She wanted to feel alive. That desire prompted her to quit her $116,000 a year job as a lawyer in February 2020 to strike out on her own. She ended up starting her own law firm, and later discovered a passion for firefighting. "A lot of things in my life were in flux at the time," the 36-year-old California resident tells CNBC Make It. Her ex-wife had just moved to Portland, Oregon, and they had recently adopted a son together as well. Working at a law firm "was just not suiting my lifestyle anymore." It came down to her mental health. "Working as a lawyer, you spend a lot of time sitting in a chair, and I have bees in my knees. I like to move around," Smith says. "I was gaining a lot of weight. I wasn't happy in my body anymore. I needed to find something that would allow me to have more balance in my life." MAKE IT At least 16 people are dead after Kentucky's catastrophic flooding, and the death toll is expected to rise At least 16 people are dead following catastrophic flooding in Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear said Friday. That number is expected to double and includes children, he told CNN earlier, as rescuers scramble to reach areas difficult to access. "It's going to get a lot higher," Beshear said at a news conference Friday morning. "There's going to be multiple families that we've lost," Beshear told Brianna Keilar on CNN's "New Day" earlier. "Kids that won't get the opportunity to grow up and experience so much that we have." "This is so deadly, and it hit so hard, and it hit in the middle of the night," the governor said, adding that although eastern Kentucky often floods, "we've never seen something like this." Rescuers are working around the clock to reach areas where flooding washed away roads or left them under water after heavy rain Wednesday night into Thursday. CNN PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
