Bryan Fire Department hiring, hoping to attract diverse pool of applicants The Bryan Fire Department is hiring and it hopes there will be a diverse pool of applicants. New fire chief Richard Guisti has been speaking with Bryan council members about how they can encourage more women, Blacks, and Hispanics to consider a job with the department. "I don't think we can be afraid to talk about the uncomfortable things of race and so forth that are out there," said Chief Guisti. According to information from the City of Bryan, the department currently has 136 firefighters. There is one Asian, one Black, eight Hispanic or Latino, and 126 white firefighters. City leaders say there's been one female firefighter in the department's history, and she left around 1990. "I think having a department that reflects our community would be great," said Bryan councilman Prentiss Madison. "To see a first responder show up at your house who looks like you, that makes you feel comfortable." KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Roof of strip mall collapses in fire, San Antonio fire chief says San Antonio firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that made part of the roof of a Southeast Side strip mall collapse on Thursday, according to Fire Chief Charles Hood. The fire happened in the attic of the strip mall, located in the 2900 block of South New Braunfels Avenue and more than 30 fire units were called to the scene. Fire officials said a convenience store in the strip mall had extensive damage from the flames, as did the attic where the fire originated. However, another business in the mall, a barbershop, didn't have any damage. No firefighters or others were injured in the fire. As of around 5 p.m., the intersection where the strip mall is located was blocked off as fire crews were still working to extinguish some of the flames. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO 18-year-old dies after being electrocuted at Clyde Lake in Callahan County A recent high school graduate has died after being electrocuted at Clyde Lake Wednesday night. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Trevor Cate. Police confirm he died from his injuries Thursday morning. Police said a boat at the lake struck a power line going out over the water. According to preliminary reports, police said an individual was in the water pulling a sail boat back to shore that had become disabled while others were inside the boat. The boat then struck a power line which caused the line to contact the water, police said. The person in the water, Cate, was struck by the electric current and became submerged, police said. Officials were able to cut power at the lake and officers responded to the scene. Cate was pulled to the shore and EMS began recovery then transported to Hendrick Medical Center. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE East Texas fire stations sound alarm of need for more volunteers If there's a fire in your area and you dial 911 and no one responds, what do you do? South Van Zandt County Fire Chief Gregg Beverly oversees four fire stations in the county. He says the 40 total of volunteers he has are not enough to cover the area. "One station right now only has two members in it," Beverly says. He said at least 25 firefighters might be used to fight a single large fire. "We can manage it (the fire) with 15 or 20. Sometimes we do it with eight," says Beverly. Lack of volunteer firefighters isn't just happening in East Texas. A survey conducted by the National Fire Protection Association found that nearly 70% of all firefighters are volunteers. Not having enough people to fight a fire presents challenges, says Bryan Sherwood, volunteer firefighter. "You know in the back of your mind, I'm going to have limited personnel." KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Frisco Fire introduces PulsePoint app for providing cardiac arrest notifications The Frisco Fire department is looking to "bridge the gap" when it comes to CPR calls. On Tuesday, the department announced that PulsePoint, a phone app that alerts CPR-trained people if they are near the site of a cardiac arrest, is now available in the city of Frisco. "We're trying to bridge the gap between the CPR (calls) that come into the dispatch center and us arriving and that little bit of time there, usually four to five minutes, of lifesaving CPR that a citizen can perform," Battalion Chief Keith Gall said Tuesday at a City Council meeting. On Tuesday, Gall said the program had been in the works for a number of years. According to the Frisco Fire Department, sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death among adults over 40 in the United States. In the country, about 326,000 people of all ages experience out-of-hospital non-traumatic sudden cardiac arrest every year, the department stated, and nine out of 10 victims die. FRISCO ENTERPRISE Porter Fire Department prepares for move into new $4.5M station The Porter Fire Department is getting a significant upgrade as officials relocate Station 122 down the street to a new, more streamlined facility. Porter Fire Department Chief Carter Johnson said the new station—located at 20515 FM 1314 in Porter—is expected to be operational in July. The original station at 17290 Porter Lane will either be sold or used for storage, Johnson said. According to Johnson, the move to the new facility was needed to address growth both within the department as well as the neighborhoods the department serves—Cumberland, Cumberland Crossing, Riverwalk and The Highlands, an incoming master-planned community. "The current station we are at was originally built when we were a volunteer fire department," Johnson said. "As we continued to grow, we just outgrew the facility." Baltimore City Fire Department names its first LGBTQIA+ liaison VIDEO: The Baltimore City Fire Department, in an effort to increase diversity and equity within the agency, named its first LGBTQIA+ liaison, and some in the community are applauding the move. Baltimore City Fire Department paramedic Kyle Lovell is the department's first LGBTQIA+ liaison. He's a five-year-veteran of the department and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. "I love serving this community and I love helping people," Lovell said. The fire department has done much leg work to get to this point behind the scenes, starting with creating all-gender restrooms in the fire stations, and all members of the department received LGBTQIA+ awareness training, which will be ongoing. "Now we have an avenue to improve communication efforts, improve our interactions and improve our working relationships with LGBTQ members and with those in our community," Lovell said. WBAL-AM 1090 BALTIMORE Tragic Michigan Fire Leads to Iconic Wedding Photo & Happy Ending It was a sad and hard thing to see this past weekend when pictures emerged from a fire on Mackinac Island at the 120-year-old Brigadoon Cottage. The Memorial Day weekend fire to the historic location caused damage to the structure estimated to be close to $1 million. Thankfully there were no injuries, and as they say, things can be repaired and replaced, but people can't. And as much as the fire was the focus of the story, there was one other story unfolding that day. According to Jason St. Onge on the Mackinac Island News and Views Facebook page, one particular picture taken that day really did speak a thousand words. The picture, snapped by Cody Langhorne, showed just wed couple Jake and Elizabeth. With the fire blazing in the background the couple were seen walking down the street in their wedding attire. WCRZ-FM 108 FLINT Newly Painted Lifeguard Tower in California Supports Autism, Special Needs PHOTO: A specially painted lifeguard tower at Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey is promoting the Los Angeles Fire Department's new Sirens of Silence program, which helps raise awareness and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program is a partnership with the county fire department, Fourth District County Supervisor Janice Hahn and the Department of Beaches and Harbors. The goal is to consider care for people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. "Our first responders know that keeping everyone safe cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach," Supervisor Hahn said in a statement. "The approach and protocols that work for one person may not be appropriate or helpful for an adult or child with Autism Spectrum Disorder." The department has developed new training with help from parents of children with autism, to give firefighters, paramedics and lifeguards more tools on how to treat someone and give them the best care possible. MARINA DEL RAY PATCH South Carolina city's first fire truck returns to service The City of Cayce will have its 1936 fire truck back on the streets Wednesday, June 9, as part of the South Carolina State Firefighters' Association 2021 Convention at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The fire truck, which was restored in 2019, will be escorted to the convention center at 11 a.m. from Cayce City Hall. It will be placed in the convention center for the duration of the conference. The truck, used by the City of Cayce from 1937–1948, was sold to another small town in 1955 and then bought back by the city about 10 years later. It sat still for a lengthy period and was fully restored after nearly two years of finding parts and doing repairs in 2019. It sits at the Cayce Historical Museum during the week, where guests can check it out along with the rest of the museum. COLUMBIA STAR ‘Sadly second nature': Florida fire crews respond to over 5,000 overdose calls in 2020 Overdoses in Jacksonville are increasing at an alarming rate, and the pandemic only made the situation worse. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said 2020 was the highest year it's seen for overdose calls: the department responded to 5,050 overdose calls. Another 2,800 calls were reported as opioid-related. In 2019, the department reported 4,140 overdose calls, and in 2018, it was just 2,417 overdose calls. JFRD spokesman Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said they have seen it all. "We've had crews respond to the same person three times in an hour and a half," he said. Prosswimmer said it doesn't matter the neighborhood, social class, age or gender. He said when he first began his firefighting career, overdose calls were unusual. "In the past five years, it has become sadly second nature," he said. WJXT-TV NEWS 4 JACKSONVILLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
