Explosion at bar in Houston Museum District under investigation, ATF and FBI assisting An explosion at a bar in the Houston Museum District shook homes miles away early Friday morning. This happened around 4:45 a.m. at Bar 5015 in the 5100 block of Almeda Road. Residents said the explosion could be felt as far away as the Texas Southern University campus. Houston police said the explosion happened after the bar closed at 11 p.m., so they don't believe anyone was inside at the time of the incident. No injuries have been reported. The explosion left wood debris littered across the area, and a KHOU 11 News crew smelled the odor of strong gas when they arrived at the scene. Police said they believe there's no threat to the public at this time. It has not been confirmed if gas was the cause of the explosion. Police said a portion of the structure is still standing and the damage is to the exterior of the building. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Man Arrested, Charged After Caldwell County Teen Firefighter, Cousin Found Dead in Double-Homicide An Austin man has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that left two people dead in Caldwell County on Tuesday evening. According to the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office, 34-year-old Bryan Haynes was arrested at a home in Bastrop County on Thursday afternoon. Haynes is accused of killing 18-year-old Klayton Manning and his 16-year-old cousin near the 4400 block of Tenney Creek Road in Tilmon on June 9. Sheriff's deputies found their bodies near the area along with a utility vehicle, and it appears as though the victims were driving down the road when they encountered the suspect. The Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force identified Manning as a volunteer firefighter with Southeast Caldwell County Volunteer Fire Department. Details about what led up to the shooting were not immediately available. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Two fires break out on East Lake Road north of Abilene Abilene fire crews were dispatched Thursday afternoon to two wild fires in rough terrain north of Abilene on East Lake Road. A grass fire was reported at 4:40 p.m. at East Lake Road and County Road 503. While en route, 911 operators received reports of a fire near a residence in the 6400 block of East Lake Road, about a mile north of the first call. Thick mesquite trees and uneven terrain hampered access to the fires, and one Abilene Fire Department brush truck had a line problem, preventing it from responding, according to scanner traffic. At the scene, another brush truck experienced a mechanical problem. The fire behind the residence was extinguished at about 4:53 p.m., according to scanner traffic. A blown transformer may have been the cause. The Hamby Volunteer Fire Department dispatched two brush trucks and another truck to the scene to assist AFD crews on the first fire, according to scanner traffic. ABILENE REPORTER-NEWS Two women rescued from Jeep in the water at Packery Channel in Corpus Christi It was another scary situation unfolding at Packery Channel last night after a couple of young women driving on the beach in a Jeep somehow ended up going right into the water. Fortunately, the two ended up getting rescued, but the vehicle was a total loss. They are said to be doing okay after being picked up by a couple of anglers who happened to be in the right place at the right time. It's something that ended up being a life-saving decision for Jeremy Northcutt and his buddy Rodney Maybe. As the fishermen headed back through the jetties on their boat, they never thought they would encounter the tail end of a Jeep sitting up out of the water. "I'm like 'wow, there's a Jeep in the water,' two girls bobbing up and down in the water, one of the girls holding a cell phone up," Northcutt said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI One person detained after abandoned San Antonio house fire A woman was detained for questioning after a fire started at an abandoned house on the westside. The San Antonio Fire Department got the call around 11 p.m. Wednesday. When they got to the house near South Hamilton Ave and Guadalupe St, they found a fire on the front side of the house. Crews were able to knock it out quickly. Fire officials said the house has had at least three fires over the last few years. Arson investigators detained a woman for questioning who was seen by witnesses leaving the area of the house right before it caught fire. So far, no word on any charges. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Tyler firefighters save business after vehicle catches on fire Tyler fire crews were able to extinguish a blaze overnight that saved a pool service business from major damage. According to Tyler Fire Marshal Paul Findley, multiple resources responded just after 2:00 a.m. to East Texas pool service where there a car engulfed in flames. The car was parked beneath an overhang "on the back side of the split level building." The Tyler Fire Department responded with five Engines, one Ladder Truck, a Battalion Chief, and an Investigator. Firefighters quickly began to work to contain the blaze while others entered the pool service to ensure that the fire did not extend through the rest of the building. Crews pulled the car away from the building to prevent additional damage. While there was smoke that entered the building, the interior suffered no flame damage. California fire protection district will no longer enter burning structures if lives are not at risk Faced with continued financial shortfalls, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District has announced that it will take "new urgent measures" to maintain its limited operations and keep firefighters safe. ECCFPD Chief Brian Helmick said during a news conference Thursday that the department will only send firefighters into burning structures if lives are at stake, starting on July 1. "There are many realities and many forces that are driving the decision I am making," Helmick said of the defensive strategy. "We really don't have any choice, being underfunded and underresourced." The chief, in an earlier news release, said the district's three-station model — instead of the six needed to cover 250 square miles — is "pushing firefighters to their limits as they respond to twice as many calls for help." In addition, only three of the department's five fire engines will be sent to a working structure fire, Helmick said, noting East Contra Costa Fire is the only agency in the county to impose such a limit. EAST BAY TIMES Ambulance crews face uncertain future as coronavirus pandemic exposes system shortcomings As the United States begins to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, ample praise has been focused upon the nation's emergency first responders – and rightfully so. Millions of nurses, doctors, firefighters and police have set their personal interests aside, routinely placing themselves and potentially their families at risk so that critical frontline medical services remain operational at a time when tens of thousands of Americans have been sickened and died from a disease with no known cure. However, the same cannot always be said of the dedication and sacrifice displayed by emergency medical service personnel. Paramedics and EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians); the health professionals who arrive in the ambulance, are nearly always the first to closely interact with patients, including those infected with COVID-19. GREAT FALLS TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Firefighters hold dogs down to protect residents while fighting a fire in Washington, D.C. VIDEO: D.C. firefighters saved the day Thursday when they threw their bodies on two dogs who were attacking people while other members were fighting a fire in Southeast. D.C. Fire and EMS officials say they were in the 4000 block of South Capitol St. SE when two dogs began attacking residents in the area. Firefighters from Truck 8 threw their bodies on the dogs in an effort to hold them down and stop further attacks before police arrived at the scene. Officials say a firefighter and another person were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Humane Rescue Alliance is investigating the incident and the dogs are now being quarantined. WTTG-TV FOX 5 WASHINGTON, D.C. New York City EMS Workers Allege Retaliation After Speaking About Pandemic A group of New York City emergency medical service workers who gave interviews to the news media, including NPR, are suing the city for allegedly retaliating against them after speaking about their experiences responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday with the federal court in Manhattan, four EMS workers allege the city is violating their right to speak on issues of public concern under the First Amendment, as well as their due process rights. In late April, the New York City Fire Department sent letters notifying three paramedics — including Elizabeth Bonilla, who spoke to NPR earlier that month — that they were restricted from treating patients, according to the complaint. Workers on restricted status are not allowed to receive overtime or work for any other emergency medical services in the city's 911 system. The letters, the complaint says, gave no reason why they were put under restrictions. NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
