New fire chief announced for city of Arlington Arlington City Manager Trey Yelverton has appointed Bret Stidham, a 30-year professional firefighter with Dallas Fire-Rescue, as the city's new fire chief and director of emergency management. Stidham has served as second-in-command with Dallas Fire-Rescue since 2019 and was assistant fire chief of emergency operations and special operations there for two years prior. On Aug. 7, Stidham will begin leading Arlington's 399-person fire department and 113-person 911 dispatch center. Assistant Fire Chief Jonathan Ingols will continue to serve as the department's interim fire chief until then. Following Fire Chief Don Crowson's announcement that he was retiring after a 40-year career, nearly 50 public safety professionals from across the country applied for the role. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Beaumont Fire-Rescue unveils new ambulance units in efforts to push towards tiered-level healthcare for the city Beaumont Fire-Rescue has officially added two new medical units that will help ease patient care concerns. The Basic Life Support (BLS) Med Units will also ensure the EMS division is able to average a minimum of seven available Med Units in service every day, according to a news release from the City of Beaumont. EMS will also be able to potentially staff up to nine Med Units, which the division is licensed for. BLS Medical Units provide basic life support and transport for patients in non-critical medical situations, which makes up the bulk of Beaumont Fire-Rescue calls. The Advanced Life Support (ALS) med units are staffed with advanced EMT's and paramedics who provide care to more critical patients. Fire Chief Earl White says this is the first step in offering tiered-level medical service, which gives first responders the ability to treat critical calls differently than non-emergency calls. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT 1 dead, 6 hospitalized from carbon monoxide poisoning at apartment, Houston Fire Department says Six people are in the hospital from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning at a northwest Houston apartment. Meanwhile, a seventh person was pronounced dead at the scene from the fumes, according to the Houston Fire Department. Firefighters said they found a generator inside when they were called to the Vintage Apartments at 6500 West 43rd, which is located along the US-290 Northwest Freeway, around 11 a.m. Thursday. Officials said all seven victims are adults in their 20s and 30s. "It's not a gas smell, it's a suspicious odor," firefighters reported on emergency radio traffic. At last check, three people were in critical condition. Firefighters could not immediately say whether storm-related power outages were tied to the incident. Carbon monoxide fumes come from items like cars, trucks, small engines, stoves, fireplaces and generators. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Amarillo Fire Marshals investigating fire VIDEO: Amarillo Fire Department is investigating a fire that happened Thursday morning behind the Redwood Inn on the Amarillo Boulevard. The first fire crew at the scene found a commercial building with fire coming through the roof. A second alarm with additional units was called due to the size and exposures. Firefighters pulled hoselines and set up an aerial ladder to begin their defensive attack, the press release said. The fire was brought under control at 6:50 a.m. this morning and the Fire Marshal is investigating. Officials said this is the second time this building has caught on fire this year. VIDEO: Massive blaze in downtown Los Angeles sends smoke billowing into the sky An intense fire erupted at a rubbish yard and spread into commercial-residential buildings, sending a thick plume of smoke billowing into the sky in downtown Los Angeles Thursday afternoon. LAFD crews responded near San Pedro and Seventh streets around 3:10 p.m. Nearly 150 firefighters battled the massive commercial fire near Skid Row. A number of people were seen running away from the area. Firefighters were initially pouring water onto the flames burning in a rubbish yard to the rear of a row of buildings with commercial businesses on the ground floor and residential units above. The raging fire eventually spread into the adjacent buildings. It was unclear what exactly was burning, but some nearby buildings were evacuated. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES New NFPA Report on 'Fatal Firefighter Injuries in the U.S.' Shows 96 On-Duty Deaths in 2022 The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released a new report, "Fatal Firefighter Injuries in the U.S. in 2022", which showed a total of 96 on-duty U.S. firefighter fatalities in 2022. Of these deaths, 51 were volunteer firefighters, 38 were career firefighters, six were contractors for federal or state land management agencies, and one was a full-time federal land management employee. The number of injury and cardiac-related fatalities in 2022 is higher than past years, largely due to the inclusion of deaths occurring within 24 hours of duty, which were previously not counted in the report unless there was a specific physical complaint while on duty. The report now includes fatal injuries and cardiac deaths that occurred within 24 hours of duty, irrespective of manifested or reported symptoms. SIERRA SUN TIMES In one New York town, emergencies are mostly handled by teenagers balancing life, death and high school The legacy of Darien-EMS Post 53 is a long one for many of the teenagers who staff it. "Growing up in Darien, you've known what Post is since you were a little kid," 15-year-old Marin Nehro, a first-year volunteer, said. "Most of the people in here have wanted to do it for a really long time." For the past 53 years, teenagers like Nehro have provided the town of Darien with much of its emergency medical service, helping deliver babies, navigate a global pandemic and provide lifesaving care to their community. Hundreds of Darien high school students — known in town as "Posties" — have been members of Post 53, earning the same state certifications as adult professionals and logging nearly 5,000 volunteer hours during the four years of their service. THE DARIEN TIMES - METERED SITE Fire rescue team receives Fire Safe South Carolina designation for 2nd year in a row VIDEO: For a second year in a row, the Horry County Fire Rescue team was designated as a Fire Safe South Carolina community. Fire Safe South Carolina is a Palmetto state original. The program is not only designed to teach the public how to stay safe, but to also get firefighters into the communities they serve. "It helps us identify different areas within the community that we need to emphasize with our risk reduction efforts," said Horry County Fire Investigation Capt. Matt Rice. Rice reflected on one of the program's most successful moments, which took place in the Freemont community. "The Baptist church up there allowed us to get into houses that we've never been able to get into before," Rice said. "And we installed over 200 alarms in one day up there." Fire crews need to meet certain criteria to receive this designation. WMBF-TV NBC 32 MYRTLE BEACH Hail batters concertgoers at Red Rocks in Colorado, seven hospitalized: 'All of a sudden, boom!' VIDEO/PHOTOS: A hailstorm rained down on people attending a concert at Red Rocks Wednesday night. Large hail stones pummeled concertgoers just before 9:30 p.m., sending seven people to the hospital. That was before performer Louis Tomlinson took the stage, and the concert had to be canceled. "It started like an instant. They gave us a warning and then it just started immediately," Olivia Santangelo told CBS Colorado. "We didn't expect it to happen. It was just like, 'Oh, warning take shelter,' then all of a sudden, boom!" Mikayla Ingram said. West Metro Fire responded to the scene, they say the seven people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As many as 90 people were treated at Red Rocks for injuries ranging from cuts to broken bones. CBS NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
