VIDEO: San Antonio Fire Department extinguishes large fire at abandoned northeast-side warehouse PHOTOS: Fire crews could be seen battling massive flames at an abandoned warehouse along the 4700 block of Rittiman Road on Thursday night. SAFD Chief Charles Hood said no one appeared to be hurt in the fire, which sparked shortly before 9 p.m. and drew a response of nearly 40 units. A cause has not yet been determined. By 9:45 p.m. large flames were no longer visible, but crews remained on scene to extinguish hotspots. With the sound of fire crews banging in the now-destroyed building behind him, Hood said the structure's deteriorating conditions made it particularly hazardous. Hood cited the possibility of "human activity" in and around the building, despite its apparent vacancy. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Storage Fire in Palo Pinto County spreads with high winds, evacuations ordered VIDEO/PHOTOS: Firefighters are still working to contain a wildfire burning in Palo Pinto County. The Storage Fire has now burned about 1,000 acres and forced evacuations in the area about 65 miles west of Fort Worth. Over the past 12 hours, the fire has grown from about 600 acres to 1,000 acres. And the containment of the fire has dropped from 40% on Thursday to 30% on Friday. Part of the problem for fire crews has been the windy conditions that cause spotting. That's where burning embers are blown across containment lines, spreading the fire. Mandatory evacuations were ordered late Thursday afternoon for three communities south of Possum Kingdom Lake – Sportsman's World, Hells Gate and Gaines Bend. About 150 homes in those areas were being threatened by the flames. But for now, there's been no word of any structures being damaged. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Coastal Bend firefighters prepare for strong potential of fires ahead of Fourth of July As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, Coastal Bend residents are being warned about the dangers of dry vegetation. Thursday, area firefighters were able to keep a brush fire from getting out of control out near Odem -- but not without also battling intense weather conditions. Exhausted firefighters not only have to battle flames, but also work through the heat of the day. While some South Texas communities have enacted burn bans ahead of the holiday, firefighters know the potential for wildland fires will still be high. Annaville Fire Department Fire Chief Michael Clack said that battling the fire that started on US Hwy. 77 near Odem was a collaborative effort. "We couldn't have done this without all the different departments today, we've got people all the way down from Refugio," he said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI New lifesaving, cooling tool will be distributed across San Antonio for heat-related calls VIDEO: San Antonio firefighters are busy this summer -- the number of heat-related calls is higher than it was this time last year. The difference now is fire and EMS have a life-saving tool they didn't have before. Ralph Riviello, emergency medicine at UT Health San Antonio, said when someone's body is this hot, every second matters. "When their temperature is 103 or higher and usually even higher, like 105-107 kind of range," Riviello said. The longer someone has a high body temperature, their chances for brain damage rise. That's why the temp bag is so crucial. "We can get pretty rapid cooling usually within, you know, 30, 40, 50 minutes," Riviello said. San Antonio Fire Department and EMS are distributing "temp bags" in ambulances. Basically, someone is placed inside the bag with ice and water. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO New Seattle fire unit focuses on electrical fires VIDEO: The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) and Seattle City Light are rolling out a new Energy Response Unit to address electrical fires in substations and underground faults. The unit includes 44 firefighters specifically trained to fight energy-related fires, a new rig with 11,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and 600 feet of hose line. The aim is to put out fires safely and quickly to minimize destruction to expensive equipment and the power outages that would follow. "These fires are rare but can cause catastrophic impacts to infrastructure, possibly causing widespread power outages, and none of us want to see that," SFD Chief Harold Scoggins said. "[This is] the most capable apparatus in the nation for extinguishing these types of powers." KING-TV NBC 5 SEATTLE Florida firefighter shares his journey with PTSD to raise awareness VIDEO: In firehouses like the St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Master Station, there's rarely a dull moment. So it shouldn't surprise you that firefighter Chris Gordon's response number has a few zeroes behind it after 24 years on the job. "I'm going to ballpark maybe, 8 or 9,000 calls I've been on," he said. Gordon told ABC Action News those thousands include some of the best calls that you can receive as a first responder. "In my career, I've helped assist three deliveries of babies," he said. But he added that they also include some of the worst calls. "[Over the years] We had multiple fatality fires," said Gordon. "I definitely had a lot more positive outcomes, you know, than negative ones or fatal ones, but you definitely remember the bad ones. They're the ones that stick with you the most." And they're decades of service that Gordon said also came with a cost. WFTS-TV ABC 28 TAMPA How a Missouri zoo uses old fire hoses as furniture for animals VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Willard Fire Department has been donating its old fire hoses to the Dickerson Park Zoo for a few years. Fire hoses are required to pass a pressure test for use. If they fail, they are used for training purposes or are disposed of. The Dickerson Park Zoo asked Willard Fire if they could have the unused fire hoses and Willard Fire said yes. The zookeepers have learned weaving techniques to create an assortment of furniture, toys, and feeders made of donated fire hoses. They have made hammocks, balls, beds and climbing furniture for the otters, lions, tigers and bears. "Thanks for giving us a meaningful way to recycle our worn-out fire hoses," said a post from the Willard Fire Protection District Facebook page. WDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY FDNY uncovers 'death trap' of lithium-ion batteries inside commercial space VIDEO: The FDNY made a major bust earlier this week while inspecting for illegal lithium-ion batteries. So far this year, the batteries have caused fires that have killed more than a dozen people, including four last week. Officials told CBS New York what they uncovered this week in Chinatown was a ticking time bomb. Lithium-ion batteries were crammed next to each other, much closer than the required three feet apart. "This location was truly a death trap," FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. Kavanagh said an inspection a few days ago at 91 Canal St., uncovered firefighters' worst nightmare -- lithium-ion batteries in a tight space, with residences above. "Multiple fire hazards -- damaged batteries, overloaded power strips," Kavanagh said. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
