One person is dead following a house fire on the city's far West Side early Friday morning, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire was called in just before 2 a.m. at a home in the 8900 block of Mansfield Street, not far from Highway 151 and Potranco Road. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the house. When firefighters made entry into the home, they found it was packed to the brim full of belongings, fire officials said. One person was killed as a result of the fire. A name and age for the person killed has not been released. Fire officials say the fire burned for a while because of the difficulty getting water to the home. No firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. The home however did sustain heavy damage during the fire.

The Lubbock Professional Firefighters Association prepared to put their endurance to the test in a 48-hour marathon called "4 x 4 x 48." They're set to run four miles, every four hours, for 48 hours. Firefighters held the "4 x 4 x 48" marathon to raise awareness and money that will go towards the Lubbock Firefighters' Charitable Foundation to support mental health and cancer prevention resources. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer was the leading cause of death in firefighters. Patrick Hart said some firefighters train for the run and some just show up and go. "Some guys are runners, and some aren't. We actually are offering not just each person do all forty-eight miles. You can row on a concept two rower, you can bike it whether it's on a stationary bike or an actual rode bike," Hart said.

VIDEO: An old house at 37 N. Chadbourne Street was fully engulfed in flames Thursday afternoon as the high winds were passing through San Angelo. Firefighters battled not only the flames but also the high winds that made it difficult to quell the fire. Over the radio we heard one person was injured. We have no further details. Near the house, an electrical line appears to be downed. It may have sparked the fire. After the fire is extinguished, the City of San Angelo Fire Marshal's office will conduct a full investigation to determine the exact cause. The fire broke out just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

As some parts of the Texas panhandle and West Texas battle wildfires, some local Central Texas fire departments are there to lend a helping hand. Killeen Fire, Temple Fire and Hewitt Fire all have two-man crews deployed to different parts of the state as part of the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS). Waco Fire did send a crew, but as of Thursday they had already returned home. The TIFMAS program helps mobilize systems, crews and aid to make statewide use of local resources. The dynamic team from Hewitt Fire Department, Casey Garcia and Lt. Corey LeBourgeois, were sent to Fort Davis where they are trying to help mitigate the Solar Park fire. "At this time, we're just patrolling fire lines trying to keep it inside the box," Garcia said. As of 5 p.m. Mar. 2, the fire is at 2,816 acres and is at 85% containment, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service Incident Viewer.

The Corpus Christi Fire Department's HAZMAT was called out to the Sutherland lumber store on Staples Street around 1 p.m. Officials with CCFD confirmed to 3NEWS that an 18-wheeler crashed while dropping something off at the store. The crash caused a diesel tank to rupture -- sending 65 gallons spilling onto the parking lot. The HAZMAT team was able to plug the leak and pump the rest of the diesel, so the truck could continue safely on its way. The company who owns the truck will be responsible for cleaning up the spill in the store's parking lot.

Dangerous is how one area fire chief is describing the combination of high wind and dry land. Updated drought monitors show this area is in a better spot than it was last year, not as dry. But, with winds continuing as they have in recent weeks, folks out fighting fires are not expecting much — if any — relief this year. "As we experience these more intense weather events, we're just going to have to start getting prepared," Bobby Gipson, Plainview Fire Department chief, said. The department is looking over plans already in place, in case wildfires spark. In a sense, it is a new list of operations for the station, which typically only responds to house fires or car crashes. But recent weather, it feels like wildfire plans may have to put in place soon. "I'm on my 34th year and I've never witnessed a windstorm like we had on Sunday," Gipson said.

Ten people were hospitalized after a Spirit Airlines plane bound for Orlando, Florida, made an emergency landing in Jacksonville due to a fire onboard, according to officials. Spirit Airlines Flight 259 landed at Jacksonville International Airport around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, after the crew reported a battery on fire in an overhead bin. The plane landed without incident and pulled up to the terminal before fire rescue teams went aboard the flight, Jacksonville Fire Rescue Capt. Eric Prosswimmer told reporters. When emergency responders were able to board the plane, they discovered the fire in the overhead compartment had been caused by a battery. The flight crew on the plane had been able to put out the fire, but there was still smoke in the cockpit, according to Prosswimmer.

PHOTOS/VIDEO: It seemed like the fire engine made by American LaFrance in 1970 was completely finished with its life. After serving a fire department in Greeley, Colorado, it was sold off to a tiny mountain enclave and then again to the Frontier Refinery operation in Cheyenne. When the operation no longer had a need for the aging machine, it was moved to a field outside of town, where it sat for more than a decade. A few years ago, former Wyoming State Fire Marshal Mark Young and the Wyoming Local Assistance State Team, or LAST, started looking for an engine that could be used as a procession vehicle to carry a casket of a fallen firefighter. Young put out word he was looking for an engine, and eventually he found the 1970 American LaFrance.

VIDEO: The opioid epidemic continues to take a toll across the country and here in Northeast Ohio. Fentanyl has become a top killer. It is now the most commonly used drug involved in overdoses. The powerful synthetic opioid is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine. Exposure to the drug has become another risk first responders face on the job. Now some senators and congress members are trying a new approach to protect first responders. 19 Investigates recently spoke with Sen. Sherrod Brown (D- OH) from his office in Washington D.C. "This is a serious public health problem that we kind of put aside during the pandemic. It's got to be front and center when it comes to mental health and addiction and death," Sen. Brown said. Sen. Brown is working across the aisle to protect first responders from exposure to fentanyl.

PHOTOS: A volunteer firefighter and 9/11 hero is taking a very long hike for a very worthy cause. Rob Weisberg, of Nesconset, New York, is setting off to walk the Appalachian Trail on March 11, 2023, he told Fox News Digital in an interview. The 2,200-mile stretch of trail from Georgia to Maine will take Weisberg some six months to complete, he said. Weisberg has been a volunteer firefighter with the Commack Fire Department in New York for 29 years. He's taking the trip not only to check off an item on his bucket list, but to give back to others. Weisberg thought it would be a "great idea" to turn the journey into a fundraiser for New York-based nonprofit Paws of War, he said. That organization helps rescue animals found overseas by deployed military personnel and brings them to U.S., and also provides service dog training for soldiers and first responders.
