Dauntless Air comes to Wichita Falls for Fire Boss 101 Training VIDEO: Texoma is no stranger to wildfires, and local first responders teaming up with aircraft companies to help battle the fires just made it easier. Probably the first question people ask is: what is a fire boss? You're about to find out. An aircraft that is changing the industry. "They can operate more or less by themselves, with just one manager, and support large areas, they don't need, big tanker base operations, they don't need retardant tanks, they just need a little bit of water," Business Development Advisor for Duantless Air, Dan Carroll said. And collaborating with local first responders, the AT-802F Fire Boss ensures fires are being de-escalated in the most efficient and safest way, so first responders are able to get on the ground and put it out. KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS Memorial hero walk held for fallen Rusk firefighter at UT Health VIDEO: On Thursday, UT Health in Tyler had a memorial hero walk for a fallen firefighter, who is donating his organs to save other people. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Fire in Longview apartment likely caused by welding, officials say No injuries were reported in a fire at the Maverick on Gilmer apartments on Wednesday in Longview. The Longview Fire Department said that when firefighters arrived they saw smoke coming from a second floor apartment. Firefighters then located and extinguished the fire before the Deputy Fire Marshal began investigating the cause of the fire. According to authorities, the fire damaged the exterior and interior walls of the building. The damage totaled up to $5,000 and officials said that the most likely cause of the fire was welding being done on an outside stairwell. 23 Longview Fire Department personnel responded with three fire engines, two ladder trucks, two ambulances and four support vehicles. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Update: Man charged with arson in connection with building fire in Austin A man has been charged with arson in connection with a fire at an abandoned building on Congress Avenue, just blocks away from the Texas State Capitol, early Tuesday morning. The Austin Fire Department said just after midnight Tuesday that crews were on the scene of a fire at a commercial building located at 907 Congress Ave., two streets over from the Capitol. AFD said at 1 a.m. that the fire was under control and, due to structural conditions, crews were operating from outside the building. AFD said there was no one inside the building, and no one was injured in the fire. Shortly after that update, AFD said firefighters had transitioned to overhaul operations, with crews putting out hot spots from outside the building. AFD said the main body of the fire had been extinguished, and there were no visible flames. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Dallas' New Overdose Response Team Saving Lives One Person at a Time A special program that has been years in the making is already making a difference in Dallas after just weeks after launching. Dallas' new Overdose Response Team has been up and running for about a month since getting city council approval in December. The program comes just as drug overdoses seem to dominate headlines in recent months. "The timing couldn't be better," said Becky Tinney, special projects director for Fort Worth-based nonprofit Recovery Resource Council, which has partnered with the city in this mission. "It has just created a problem that we haven't seen the scale of." Even this week, authorities are investigating a rash of drug overdoses in the South Dallas area. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to about 27 overdose calls in a 12-hour period on Tuesday night into Wednesday. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Historic prep school building in New York destroyed by huge fire The old Doane Stuart School in the area of Mt. Hope Drive in Albany appears to be a total loss, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said. The fire broke out Thursday evening, with all areas of the building involved. A steeple on the building has collapsed, said the mayor, with more collapses expected. Route 9W at Corning Hill is closed in that area. Meantime, it is still way too early to determine a cause. "At this point, our investigators can't even get into where they would need to be to investigate this fire," Sheehan said. She said the state will be helping with the investigation. WNYT-TV NBC 13 ALBANY Related: 'We lost a treasure here', Albany mayor emotional over burned out historic property Retired Seattle firefighter teaches 'CPR for mental health' VIDEO: Mike Washington doesn't go out on calls anymore, but the retired Seattle firefighter is still fighting to save lives. "We lose more firefighters, more police officers to suicide than we do on the job," Washington said. Washington talks to first responders and veterans about stress, addiction and suicide, recently taking his message to Seattle Station 24. "As a firefighter, we get called to the worst things because that's our job," Washington said. "We signed up for this job, but no one talks about our mental health." Washington spent 32 years going to those calls and 23 years in the Marine Corps protecting his community and country. But who was protecting him? "Being brought up in the Marine Corps and fire service we were mentored by tough guys," Washington said. "There was also a lot of 'Don't complain. Don't cry about it. Rub some dirt on it and get back in there.'" IAFC.ORG Woman starts wish list to help a Virginia fire department, now the community has stepped in VIDEO: There's constantly training for members of the Petersburg Fire Department. "I don't think a lot of people truly realize how many hours a day, most of the time it's 24, that our firefighters spend at the fire station," Kathleen McCay, the owner of Petersburg's Old Townes Alibi, said. To support the three shifts of firefighters at the city's four fire stations, McCay created an Amazon wish list with the idea of going beyond the basics that the city provides. The idea caught on within the community. "To launch our wish list Tuesday morning and have already 170 some items secured and on their way, that just says the community wants to say thank you," McCay said. The wish list has both small and big items. "So, aluminum pans, aluminum foil, snacks, hydration packets, beverages, hot sauce, condiments, sides for when they cook family style," McCay said.
