Investigators searching for cause of fire in vacant San Antonio apartment that also damaged neighbors' homes PHOTO: A Northwest Side apartment that was supposed to be vacant suddenly had fire moving into and through it late Thursday night. The fire broke out after 10 p.m. inside one unit of the AmberHill apartments, then quickly spread into the building's attic. Once there, the flames and smoke began seeping into other apartments at the complex, located near Loop 410 and Evers Road. Firefighters say the apartment where it started had been boarded up for some time prior to the fire. Crews worked throughout the night, putting it out and then repeatedly seeing it spark up again. "I didn't think it was going to be that messed up. I thought this fire was little," said Derrius Dixon, who lived in a second-floor unit. Dixon says early on, he heard a knock on his door but did not realize that he and his neighbors were being urged to evacuate. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO McLennan County: Downsville Volunteer Fire Chief needs public's help to fight stomach cancer Downsville Volunteer Fire Chief Kelvin Toliver has been diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer, which has spread into surrounding tissue. The department says he is being super strong and is doing his best with what he has. Chief Tolivar has had to quit working to continue his treatments – some of these are in Dallas. He is having to pay a big amount on one of his medications. Since the chief has no income and his savings are being depleted on a daily basis, the department feels that he needs some help. A chili fundraiser will be taking place at the Downsville Fire Station this Saturday, from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. The station is located at 7701 S. 3rd Street Road. The department says any donations will help. A GoFundMe page has also been set up. KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO $50,000 in damage caused by heat lamp fire in south Abilene A structure fire in the far south side area of Abilene burned up an estimated $50,000 in damage to the backside of a home due to a heat lamp on the back porch. Around 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 17, Abilene Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 5000 block of Big Sky Drive. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Follow-up: Austin Fire Department reports increase in fires started by homeless individuals The Austin Fire Department says they have been seeing a huge increase in fires started by the homeless community, an issue they say increases during the colder months. Early Wednesday morning, Austin Fire crews responded to a fire at a vacant home on East Cesar Chavez. "Crews arrived [and] found smoke showing from the home fire in a back room that was quickly extinguished," said Division Chief Thayer Smith with the Austin Fire Department. Chief Smith says the cause was determined to be a warming fire started inside the house by a homeless individual. "[That person] admitted to the fact that they had been in the home and they had the fire in a container to attempt to stay warm," he said. Chief Smith says fires started by the homeless are not uncommon. In fact, he says AFD responds to these sorts of fires regularly. KTBC FOX 7 AUSTIN Midland Fire Department gives Thanksgiving safety tips According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for house fires. As Thanksgiving fast approaches, Midland's Central Fire Station is ready to gear up and step into action. "We do see an increase in fires around the holidays in general," said Midland Fire Investigator Justin Rhoades. "Thanksgiving you do get quite a few, people tend to forget what they're cooking or follow improper rules while cooking." If you're frying a turkey this year, make sure it's defrosted and do so outside. "Make sure your turkey is fully defrosted, plan on that several days ahead," said Rhoades. "The biggest thing we'd like to remind people ahead of the holidays is to have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in their houses," said Rhoades. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Port Neches honors volunteer firefighters retiring after collective 90-plus years of service Three Port Neches firefighters were recognized before City Council Thursday night as they retired from a collective 90-plus years of service — most as volunteers. "Their efforts, their endeavors, their hardships and their decades of sacrifice of time and resources have contributed to the wellbeing of our community," Fire Chief Eloy Vega told councilmembers. "We are in eternal gratitude for their service. It's a personal honor to be a part of this and be in your presence. I look up to you all for your service. We have our heartfelt thanks." Vega then called on Corbett Ross, president of the volunteer firefighters, to present tokens of appreciation to Tommy Wells, Kerry Holmes and Terrell Ross. Corbett, who had followed in his father's footsteps, was able to present his parent with an engraved axe to signify his 30-plus years as a volunteer firefighter — some of which had been spent as also being president of the volunteers. VIDEO: Large house fire causes estimated $350,000 in damage in South Carolina Columbia-Richland Fire says no injuries have been reported in a large house fire reported on Thursday afternoon. According to a department spokesperson, the two-alarm fire was called in around 5 p.m. on Rusty Mill Drive - roughly three miles east of Pontiac in northeastern Richland County. About 50 fire department personnel responded to the fire, which displaced six people. WLTX-TV CBS 19 COLUMBIA New York firefighter's retirement brings an end to 100-year tradition Michael Stanley was a part of the Schenectady Fire Department long before he officially joined its ranks in 1999. Firefighting, in fact, has been a tradition in his family dating back more than 100 years. Like many who answer the call to serve, the 47-year-old Stanley followed in the footsteps of his late father, Robert Stanley, who joined the department in the 1970s before retiring in the early 2000s as a deputy chief, capping off a 32-year career. "From the youngest age, I can remember going to the Christmas parties and picnics," said Michael Stanley. "Everyone talks about the fire department being a brotherhood, but it's not just a brotherhood. All our families get together and enjoy each other, too. We've had that ever since I was a little kid." THE DAILY GAZETTE - METERED SITE Kentucky fire department gets new tool they say will keep Ohio river safer than ever VIDEO: The Louisville Fire Department has a new tool that leaders believe will keep the waterways safer than ever before. On Thursday WLKY got a first look at LFD's newest rescue boat, during one of the training sessions for one of the three crews that will be manning it. "There's not a vessel close to this within the port," said Louisville major Jonathon Jones. "The next closest one is probably Cincinnati, Covington [KY] area." The boat was, in part, paid for with the federal port security grant, and it arrived at the LFD port last week. Jones was the one who filled out the application in 2019 after their previous frontline rescue boat was damaged in a storm in the summer of 2018. "Since that boat was damaged we've been using our 1976 coast guard cutter as our frontline boat," said Jones. WLKY-TV CBS 32 LOUISVILLE TV meteorologist surprises retiring North Carolina firefighter who saved him six years ago VIDEO: Six years after the wreck that almost took the life of Larry Sprinkle, he was able to thank the firefighter who saved him on a special day for that firefighter. On May 4, 2016, Sprinkle was driving on I-485 during the late afternoon rush, with traffic moving at a steady pace. Then, Sprinkle remembers traffic stopped abruptly. "Not seeing the brake lights, I slam into a large pickup truck," Sprinkle said. "The front of my car is totally demolished. People in the truck are OK... me, that's another story." Sprinkle has said the moments after the crash were like a huge blur. "The dashboard was on my chest," Sprinkle said a year after the crash, recalling the details. Firefighters from Ballantyne's Fire Station 32 were among the first responders who quickly arrived at the scene. One of those firefighters was Pete Baretsky. WCNC-TV NBC 36 CHARLOTTE FDA Moves Toward Making Overdose Antidote an Over-the-Counter Drug The U.S. Food and Drug Administration appears poised to approve certain naloxone products for over-the-counter use, a move that would help fight the nation's opioid epidemic. Naloxone (Narcan, Evzio) can save lives when administered soon after the first signs of an overdose from opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone or morphine. On Tuesday, the FDA issued a Federal Register notice that could lead to some prescription naloxone products getting approved for over-the-counter sales. The notice could also encourage development of new nonprescription naloxone products. "Today's action supports our efforts to combat the opioid overdose crisis by helping expand access to naloxone," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf in an agency news release.
