Five Pearland firefighters were injured while battling a fire at a mobile home Thursday. According to Pearland Fire Chief Jack Taylor, the fire happened in the 18000 block of Frazier Lane. Firefighters were called to the home around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. When units arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the mobile home. Taylor said while battling the fire, a wall fell on firefighters, injuring four of them. They were rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital. One of the firefighters suffered a broken leg and burns. He is in stable condition and will stay in the hospital for at least another 24 hours. The other three firefighters were released from the hospital Thursday afternoon. A fifth firefighter was also injured while fighting the fire. She had minor injuries and was cleared at the scene. No other injuries were reported. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON VIDEO: Austin City Council approved a contract between an artificial intelligence company and Austin Energy Thursday to better protect the community against wildfire. It's the first time the technology will be used in Texas. Pano AI uses high-definition cameras and artificial intelligence to detect wildfire smoke and notify fire crews. The technology helps expedite the fire response and can help protect crews from possible downed power lines, in the case of Austin Energy. The company uses 360-cameras, which will be put at high points such as cell towers throughout Austin Energy's coverage area, which includes Travis County and parts of surrounding counties. "We're gonna fine-tune the locations working closely with Austin Energy and the local fire departments. But you're gonna have 12 locations, typically they're about 10 miles apart," said Arvind Satyam, chief commercial officer and co-founder of Pano AI. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN The Wichita Falls Fire Department is devoting a special campaign to October in compliance with Breast Cancer Month. The Wichita Falls Fire Department is selling its annual "Care to Wear Pink" t-shirts for the 2023 campaign to raise awareness and money in the fight against breast cancer. All through the month of October the community can help by purchasing a pink t-shirt for $20. WFFD Firefighter Jon Bradley, who has headed up this campaign for the last 6 years, said, "All of us know someone who has been affected by this, so we donate half of the sales to Susan G. Komen and the other half to American Cancer Society." "Throughout the month of October, we all wear these shirts throughout the station." KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS |

A plane operated by FedEx skidded off the end of a runway at an airport in Chattanooga, Tennessee, after reporting a landing gear failure, emergency officials said. Three people were aboard the Boeing 757 aircraft, which came to a stop between the runway and a nearby road late Wednesday, the Chattanooga Fire Department said on social media. "All three people on the aircraft are accounted for," the department said. The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the incident. "FedEx Flight 1376 landed with its gear up and slid into the grass at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport" around 11:45 p.m., the FAA said in a statement. The plane "was headed to Memphis International Airport when it returned." Emergency crews were called to the airport just after 11 p.m. on reports that the jet was making its final approach with landing gear failure, fire officials said. CNN VIDEO: When it comes to emergencies, seconds matter and if there are any hurdles in communicating, it can mean life or death. At Milwaukee Fire Station 26, near 26th and Scott, oftentimes firefighters aren't saying, "How are you feeling?" but rather "¿cómo te sientes?" "I would say I speak Spanish almost every shift," Firefighter Shirley DeJesús-Ortiz said. "I don't think there's ever been a time where I haven't had to use my skills." DeJesús-Ortiz became a firefighter three years ago. It was important for her to be the representation she didn't see as a kid. "I didn't really see anybody that looked like me on the fire department," DeJesús-Ortiz said. "I did see a lot of Hispanic men on the job, but I didn't really see a lot of Hispanic women. I wanted to be that change and let it be known that we can also do it too." WTMJ-TV NBC 4 MILWAUKEE VIDEO: Starring TikTok star Jason Patton, the national campaign takes a lighthearted approach to promoting early cancer detection among firefighters. DetecTogether, a non-profit dedicated to promoting early cancer detection and prevention, released a national education campaign targeting firefighters. The campaign is informed by data from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, which suggests that occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service and firefighters are 14% more likely to die from cancer than the general population. Despite these grim statistics, DetecTogether's campaign makes light of the situation by showcasing the hidden musical talents and dance moves of firefighters. THE DRUM - METERED SITE VIDEO: El Dorado County's fire district just swore in its youngest firefighter. He's so little, they had to special order his uniform. He's a little guy, but I bet you won't underestimate him when you see what he's overcome. With a big smile and beaming eyes, Magnum's mom Tashina calls him a rough and tumble "joy boy." You'd never know this joy boy spent four of his five years battling a rare bone marrow disorder. "There were a couple of times during the transplant where I wasn't sure if he was going to make it," Tashina said. Doctors diagnosed Magnum shortly after his first birthday. It would lead to 21 blood transfusions and then 21 platelet transfusions during a bone marrow transplant. Through it all, there was one thing that always brought a smile: fire engines. Magnum calls them "woo-woos." He even told his mom he wanted to be a woo-woo when he grows up. KOVR-TV CBS 13 SACRAMENTO |
