Abandoned San Antonio restaurant erupts into flames VIDEO: San Antonio firefighters returned to a familiar site Thursday morning when a fire broke out at a vacant Long John Silver's restaurant on the city's Southwest Side. The fire erupted around 10:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Southwest Military Drive across from South Park Mall. Fire crews arrived on the scene to heavy smoke and fire. Firefighters started out with a defensive attack but quickly had to move to an aerial attack by focusing on the roof. Firefighters are very familiar with the building because it's the second time in a week they've been called to battle a suspicious fire at the restaurant. A San Antonio Fire Department said there has been a recent trend of suspicious fires in the area. "There have been a number of fires recently in this part of town, eight or nine, to be exact. They don't appear to be related, but all suspicious in nature, so all under investigation," said San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Joe Arrington. And his comment to me is, ‘My hands are burned off,'" Chief Kubinski says. 23-year-old Drew Kubinski was on his way back home from Nashville, where he was in an accident that left his car in flames. "A little bit scary, because they said they're taking him into the into the washing station that's in the air to wash off any chemicals from the burns," says Chief Kubinski. Drew suffered second and third-degree burns to more than 25 percent of his body. "That is months long, if not years long, in ways of therapy – to get back to somewhat close to normal usage of hands," says Chief Kubinski. CBS NEWS Fire station in North Carolina city becomes second facility to 'flip the switch' on solar energy Continuing an initiative to install solar panels on buildings in Asheville and Buncombe County, the City of Asheville recently "flipped the switch" on solar panels just installed at Fire Station 10. Located on Old Haywood Road, Fire Station 10 became the second facility to include renewable energy production. The photovoltaic array, or solar panels, will now provide about 40% of the energy consumed by the fire station. This installation, along with the first at the Transit Station on Coxe Avenue, support the Asheville City Council's 100% Renewable Energy Initiative and the council's goal of A Clean and Healthy Environment. The larger initiative includes installing solar panels on Buncombe County government, Asheville City and Buncombe County schools and AB-Tech facilities. Bob Ferris remarked on the photo of his grandfather, former Fire Chief Herb Ferris. "It was a little emotional to see this," Bob Ferris said. On Thursday afternoon, city officials, including Mayor Roxann Wedegartner, and a handful of members of the Fire Department were invited to the temporary fire station on Hope Street for the opening of a time capsule taken from the southeast cornerstone of the former fire station on Main Street. The opening of the time capsule took place just hours before the city closed on the sale of the property near the intersection of Main Street and Coombs Avenue, where the new permanent fire station is slated to be built. THE RECORDER - METERED SITE Major California earthquake would knock out cell service, communications, study finds A major earthquake in California is likely to knock out many communications services for days or weeks, including the vast majority of cellphones in the areas closest to the epicenter, according to a landmark new analysis by the U.S. Geological Survey. The widespread disruption would imperil the public's access to 911 operators and lead to delays in reporting fires and calls for medical help. Cell towers are vulnerable to sustained power outages. The same goes for cellular equipment on power poles and buildings at risk of extreme shaking, liquefaction and fire, the USGS said. California's cellphone networks have been notoriously unreliable during blackouts that occur during life-threatening emergencies, such as during wildfires in 2019, where wide swaths of the San Francisco Bay Area were cut off from cell service for significant periods.
