Year of negotiations leads to new, 4 year contract for Fort Worth firefighters A year of preparations and negotiations has led to a new, four-year contract for firefighters with the City of Fort Worth. The Fort Worth City Council unanimously approved the agreement on Oct. 25 following 97.4% approval of the proposal by the 970 members of the association. The agreement is the fourth collectively bargained agreement between the city and firefighters, according to the Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Association. "This agreement is a win for the city, the taxpayers and for firefighter families. City leaders showed that they are committed to cooperating with firefighters on important issues such as labor-management agreements," said Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Association President Michael Glynn. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Travis County ESD 2 in Pflugerville introduces new EMS telehealth program Travis County Emergency Services Department No. 2 has the goal of speeding up 9-1-1 call response times. A new telemedicine program aims to help paramedics respond to emergencies quickly and free up ambulances that don't need to go to the emergency room. This new telehealth service is bringing a doctor to the patient's side. Travis County ESD 2 said it's the first fire department in Central Texas that's providing onsite virtual physicians. The department started using the new telemedicine 9-1-1 service earlier this month to free up space for more urgent calls. When there's a medical emergency, the first thing a patient typically does is call 9-1-1. A medic then shows up with an ambulance, but that person calling for help might not always need one. "They need some care but they don't need an ambulance, but there's not really an avenue for them to address that," Fire Chief, Nick Perkins said. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Man charged with setting Montgomery County home on fire after assaulting wife has been captured in Round Rock, officials say A man accused of setting his home on fire after assaulting his wife has been captured in Round Rock, according to the Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office. Chris Matthew Levlon has been charged with arson and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Tuesday, the North Montgomery County Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 9100 block of Sierra Del Carmen in the Deer Trail Subdivision, east of Conroe. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes of units arriving and no injuries were reported, officials said. It was discovered that the fire was intentionally set to the home as part of a domestic violence incident. Investigators said that Levlon set the fire shortly after threatening his soon-to-be ex-wife with a knife. Levlon left the home before the fire department and law enforcement arrived. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Lightning strike causes 2-story house fire in northwest Austin, 3 adults displaced The Austin Fire Department said a two-story house caught on fire after it was struck by lightning Friday morning in northwest Austin. Firefighters responded around 8:09 a.m. to the structure fire call located at 10401 Chestnut Ridge Road. When crews arrived, the fire was seen coming from the attic. Firefighters were able to confine it to the attic and quickly extinguish it. Officials say there is water damage to the inside of the home. Three residents of the house have been displaced due to the fire. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Bryan firefighters will ‘Fill the Boot' this weekend for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Bryan firefighters will be scattered around the city this weekend asking drivers at various intersections to donate to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "After 68 years of participating with the MDA for the Fill the Boot program here in the city of Bryan, we're so happy to be back on the streets and seeing these smiley faces and collecting money," said Daniel Buford. "We're going to be next to the Target store, we'll be next to Walmart on 2018, at the Walmart off of Briarcrest, we'll also be in downtown Bryan and then at Texas and Villa Maria," he said. "Last year we hit a record of over $70,000. We were #10 in the nation. We were second in the state of Texas just behind San Antonio, who beat us out by about $30,000." The dollars raised through Fill the Boot fund MDA's mission of empowering people living with neuromuscular disease to achieve their potential. New Video Shows Florida Firefighter Saving Girlfriend From Fiery Crash New video shows the moment a Broward firefighter saved his girlfriend from a burning car after a fiery crash involving a fuel truck on Interstate 95 earlier this week. The cellphone footage shows firefighter Bryan Aparicio and his girlfriend, Su Hninyi, running as the fuel tanker and other vehicles are consumed by flames. The crash happened on I-95 near Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Aparicio and Hninyi were in an Uber heading to a cruise port at the time. Florida Highway Patrol officials said a car had traveled into the tanker's lane of travel, resulting in a collision that caused the tanker to overturn. A third driver swerved to avoid the crash and hit the median, knocking down a light pole that fell into traffic, hitting the fourth and fifth cars, officials said. Aparicio was able to break the back window of the burning car he was in to escape but Su was still trapped inside, so he went back to save her. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI A Proclamation on National First Responders Day, 2022 On National First Responders Day, we honor the bravery of our Nation's heroes who put their lives on the line for their fellow Americans each and every day — from law enforcement officers who keep our streets safe and firefighters who rush into burning buildings, to relief workers who care for our families after natural disasters and EMTs, paramedics, and other public health workers who provide life-saving emergency care at a moment's notice. When tragedies strike, these women and men are always there to help us, and we thank them for their extraordinary service to our country. I have witnessed up close the courage, character, and valor of first responders across the Nation. In Florida, Puerto Rico, and Kentucky, search and rescue teams swooped in to save lives in the aftermath of Hurricanes Ian and Fiona and historic flooding. THE WHITE HOUSE ATF completes investigation into January 24 fire that killed 3 Baltimore City firefighters The ATF says they've completed their investigation into the January 24 fire that killed three Baltimore City firefighters. It was that morning when a vacant home at 205 S. Stricker went up in flames. Paul Butrim, Kelsey Sadler and Kenneth Lacayo were among the firefighers who responded to battle the blaze. The privately owned vacant home collapsed, trapping the trio, ultimately killing them. Their deaths were ruled homicide, as an act of arson was determined to have caused the fire. Little information has been revealed on any potential suspects. So far, investigators have only released a 40 second video clip that shows a person near the scene of the fire the night before. A $100,000 reward was being offered for information leading to that person's identity. WMAR-TV ABC 2 BALTIMORE Unvaccinated firefighters in Washington can return to work Starting Nov. 1, firefighters who were let go from South King Fire and Rescue because of the state's COVID-19 vaccine mandate will be allowed to come back to work. The agency's board of directors voted unanimously during their Sept. 27 meeting to authorize Fire Chief Dave Mataftin to let unvaccinated firefighters return beginning Nov. 1, which is the day after Gov. Jay Inslee's vaccine mandate for healthcare workers is scheduled to end. That means SKFR employees who were put on leave for choosing not to take the vaccine can return to their public-facing jobs. Those separated from the agency can also return as long as vacancies for their positions exist. (New employees will still need to receive a COVID vaccination, Mataftin said.) Mataftin said he is confident it's safe for those unvaccinated personnel to return.
