Woman killed in San Antonio apartment fire, fire crews say One person has died after a northeast-side apartment complex caught fire Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson with SAFD. Firefighters were called out to the two-alarm fire in the 8800 block of Starcrest Drive just after 9 a.m. The person killed at the scene was a woman in her 60's. Her identity is not yet available. There were no other injuries reported, however fire officials say a small dog was also killed. Fire crews do not yet know how the fire started. "There was heavy smoke damage in that unit, so there is no way to know the cause of the fire at this time," Fire Chief Charles Hood said at the scene. Chief Hood also said crews used a technique when they first arrived called "resetting" the fire. That is a strategy used when firefighters first arrive to a fire with heavy flames. The firefighters put water in a window to cool it down so they can enter the building. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO COVID-19 outbreak reported at El Paso veteran's facility Two residents of an El Paso veteran's assisted living center have been transferred to a long-term acute care facility after testing positive for COVID-19. The Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home is the latest elder care facility to be hit in the fast-moving resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic in El Paso. In the past five days, two residents have been moved to the El Paso Long Term Acute Care Hospital, LTAC Chief Executive Skylier Blake said. "I have 15 COVID beds," Blake said of his current total coronavirus caseload. "I am going to be down to one left." Multiple attempts to reach the director of nursing or another manager at Ambrosio Guillen were unsuccessful on Thursday. An assistant answering calls said no one was available. El Paso is experiencing a catastrophic surge in COVID-19 cases, with the city reporting between 800 and 1,400 new cases per day for more than a week. EL PASO TIMES Related: Houston firefighters brave the cold in El Paso to help COVID-19 patients There are not enough "THANK YOUs" in the world we can give to our first responders -- specifically our first responders here in Houston. Not only have our Houston firefighters braved the ongoing battle of COVID-19 within our city, but now several have taken the long drive to El Paso to continue the COVID-19 fight as cases there spike at an alarming rate. The Houston Fire Department posted to Twitter photos of firefighters enduring the cold temperatures, helping dozens of COVID patients in EL Paso using mobile medical units that were deployed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The mobile medical units are being used to free up hospital beds in the area for COVID-19 patients. A recent study released by the University of Texas shows the El Paso area could run out of hospital beds by Nov. 8. KWTX-TV 10 NEWS WACO Big Spring votes to fund SAFER grant for fire department The Big Spring City Council voted unanimously to keep SAFER grant funding for the Big Spring Department. In an often-contentious meeting, the city council decided not to cancel the grant, which allows the fire department to hire 10 new firefighters. Much of the discussion revolved around a misunderstanding. In September 2019, the city received a $1.3 million SAFER grant from FEMA and an additional $800,000 from the Big Spring. Until now, the city has only received $22,000 in grant money, but the city hasn't hired the additional firefighters, meaning they're violating the federal grant terms. After numerous citizens got up and spoke on the department's behalf, the council voted to acquire all the money, which will take at least one more council session. It was a decision that drew applause and praise from the numerous firefighters present. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

More than 30 states reported more than 1,000 cases. It was the first time the U.S. has crossed 90,000 cases in one day, almost 10,000 more than the previous high of 80,662 cases, which was set just a day before on Wednesday. The record, of 90,456, also came after the U.S. logged 9 million COVID-19 cases, only hours after reporting a single-day record crossing 80,000 cases for the first time. The U.S. recorded 982 deaths on Thursday, leading the world death toll with nearly 230,000 deaths, according to the John Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard. NBC NEWS Family credits Kentucky firefighter with saving newborn daughter's life after premature delivery One week old and weighing a little more than 1 pound, Ellie Whitehall is beating all the odds in the Norton Children's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit. From Lebanon Junction, her family credits a firefighter for not only delivering Ellie but also saving the child's life. Ellie's mother, Brianna Whitehall, thought nothing of the pain she felt at the 24-week mark of her pregnancy. "I was thinking it was Braxton Hicks (contractions), false labor basically," she said. Minutes later, however, she was on her bathroom floor delivering a baby girl. "My first phone call was my mom," said Edelin Whitehall, Ellie's father. "Who doesn't need their mom? I don't care how old you are." Edelin Whitehall's next call was to 911, though. Ellie needed immediate care when she decided to come into the world 16 weeks early on the bathroom floor. When the Whitehalls' call for help went out over the radio, a volunteer firefighter for the Lebanon Junction Fire Department, William Brown, just happened to be a two minutes away. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE Tragic 1912 fire in San Antonio claims 8 lives, destroys St. John's Orphanage A tragic fire killed eight people, including three young children, and destroyed St. John's Catholic Orphans Home back in 1912. The fire started around 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, 1912, at the orphanage on the corner of San Saba and W. Houston Street, where CHRISTUS Santa Rosa now stands. According to the San Antonio Light, 87 children, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years old, and nine nuns were in the building at the time of the fire. San Antonio Fire Chief Wright, at the time, told reporters the work of the nuns "was all that saved those little tots." After the fire broke out, the first work of the nuns was devoted to saving the children. They woke up the sleeping orphans and marched them all, single file, down the only fire escape on the west side of the building. The death of Mother Mary of the Cross was one of pure courage, as she learned Francis O'Brien, a baby, was missing. Without hesitation, she ran back upstairs, found the boy and struggled to a window with him in her arms. WOAI-TV NBC 4 SAN ANTONIO Haunted Witches Castle in Maine raising money for firefighter VIDEO: Five years ago, Carol Cody and her husband Bob Gross, along with Bob's daughter April, turned their barn into a pirate ship for Halloween with the idea of inviting the public and taking donations to raise money for non-profits. They do Halloween at 73 New Road in Penobscot the way other people might do Christmas, or New Year's Eve. The barn is a Haunted Witches Castle this year instead of a pirate ship, but it's still scary and still raising money for a great cause. They started getting the castle ready in August for what has become an annual October event. A lot of adults who bring their kids, and some that just come as adults," Carol said. "And they really like it because they're usually blown away at the amount of detail we do, and just how it looks really neat." There's no charge to enter this terror-dome, but they are asking for donations to help support Penobscot firefighter Jim Flannery, who's been diagnosed with ALS.
