Highland Village names new fire chief The city of Highland Village announced Thursday that Assistant Fire Chief Jason Collier has been promoted to Highland Village Fire Chief. Collier has been filling the position on an interim basis since May, when Michael Thomson left the job to become the new fire chief at the city of Carrollton. Collier began his career in fire service in 1985 and joined the Highland Village Fire Department in 2008 as the city's first assistant fire chief. "Chief Collier has a long-standing history with the City and the Fire Department," said City Manager Paul Stevens. "His ability to lead the department, his love for the profession and the service provided will benefit the department and our residents." Since joining Highland Village, Collier has been appointed to the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter Advisory Board, which provides a voice for setting standards and requirements for firefighters in the state of Texas, according to a city news release. CROSS TIMBERS GAZETTE Man allegedly sets fire, threatens Longview fire official A man was taken into custody after officials say he set a fire at a Longview apartment complex. According to the Longview Fire Department, they got a call about 2:30 p.m. Thursday about a fire that had been started at Longview Square Apartments on Pine Tree Road. The fire burned part of a fence and some brush near the apartments. Firefighters put out the fire in minutes. The man who allegedly started the fire threatened a deputy fire marshal with a tree branch. The marshal had to use pepper spray to subdue him and get him in custody. The suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation and will be booked into the Gregg County Jail on assault of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and arson. The apartment buildings did not catch fire during the incident. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Corpus Christi first responders honored for their quick actions in water rescue The Corpus Christi Fire Department spent the day honoring some local heroes. It was part of their annual awards ceremony held at the FEMA dome at Del Mar College's Winward Campus. Among those honored was Captain Jeffrey De La Garza and Captain Dana Lechner. On the night of June 11, 2022, both jumped into action to rescue three people trapped in an SUV that went over the seawall and into the Corpus Christi Marina. "I was the first fire unit on scene," recalled De La Garza. "Two PD officers were already in the water. They said the car was right under them. So, I jumped in and then swam onto the car and then we basically started diving down trying to see the layout of the vehicle, what kind of vehicle it was, where the doors were and gain access to pull the victims out." KRIS-TV NBC/CW+ 6 CORPUS CHRISTI 1 man dies after plane he was on with 2 others crashed into Tomball mobile home community, DPS says A man is dead after a small plane with three people onboard crashed into a mobile home community in Tomball, Texas DPS confirms. On Thursday, a plane that was coming into Houston from Tennessee crashed in the 8500 block of Monterrey Pine Place near FM 2920, according to authorities. The plane, which refueled in Louisiana before continuing its journey to Houston, appeared to have engine troubles right outside of Hooks Airport, according to DPS. Initial reports stated that the plane hit a home in the area, but DPS said the plane did not hit any structures. Instead, it hit large trees and ended up between two homes. Two men and one woman were on board. It's not immediately known which of the occupants died. According to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, about 75 gallons of aviation gas spilled from the aircraft. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Alamo Fire and Police Departments receive $500K for new radio equipment The city of Alamo was awarded a grant of more than $500,000 to help its police and fire departments upgrade their outdated radio equipment. U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez was on hand for a check presentation ceremony Tuesday morning at Alamo City Hall, in which the $540,000 check was presented to Alamo Police Chief Richard Ozuna and Alamo Fire Chief Roy Contreras, along City Manager Bobby Salinas and members of the Alamo City Commission. "Vicente Gonzalez was actually behind it all, and it was to improve our public safety radio equipment — our infrastructure for our communications out here at the police department," Ozuna said. "That is going to be used to purchase new radio equipment, handheld portables, because the current ones we have — the majority of them are old and antiquated." MY RGV NEWS - METERED SITE Concerns raised as fires continue to reignite at Brownsville warehouse storing hand sanitizer A company that owns a Brownsville warehouse used to store pallets of hand sanitizer is on notice. Brownsville firefighters responded to a fire at that warehouse last month – and officials say two more fires have reignited since. People who live and work around the warehouse, located on the 1300 block of Cheers Street, said they're concerned more fires will keep happening. The Brownsville Fire Department told the company – Parker & Company – to clean up the mess and get the damaged hand sanitizer out of the area. Some of the hand sanitizers stored there were previously recalled, officials said. The Brownsville fire marshal and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said they want to know why the company left material like this out in the sun and humidity in the first place. VIDEO: Auto parts store in Ohio catches fire, collapses FOX 8 Video shows a Cleveland auto parts store on fire and collapsing. More than a dozen crews were called to the scene at the Clark Auto Parts at West 46th Street and Clark Avenue around 3:20 a.m. on Friday. At one point more than 50 firefighters were on hand. Officials said the fire seems to have started on the service and machine shop side of the auto parts store. Flammable material inside made the fire all the more challenging to combat. "It was pretty dangerous. We were fortunate in one level that the building that collapsed was sort of caught by a phone pole and some wires. It was held up a little bit," said Lt. Norman. "Anytime you come to fight a fire it's a dangerous situation. We do the best thing that we can to make sure that our members are in a safe proximity." The front of the two-story building collapsed after flames broke out. WJW-TV FOX 8 CLEVELAND Seattle council member proposes new strategies to safeguard attacks on firefighters VIDEO: ‘Unacceptable.' That's what a Seattle City Council member is calling the violent attacks against firefighters responding to emergency calls. The fire department has been calling for urgent action, as the disturbing trend continues. Council member Andrew Lewis is proposing two new strategies to help. To help protect firefighters, Lewis wants to propose a law, that makes it illegal to obstruct a firefighter from helping someone or putting out a fire. Surprisingly, Lewis said Seattle doesn't have a law like that. "Which is horrible, that's a policy we need to change," said Lewis. He also wants to expand the ‘Health One' program so more mental health clinicians can go with firefighters to some of the calls. "Look: there's a lot of people doing weird things post-COVID, and our first responders have to have all the tools to respond to a variety of things that pre-COVID they were never exposed to," Lewis added. KOMO-TV ABC 4 SEATTLE Amazon took all U.S. solar rooftops offline last year after flurry of fires, electrical explosions On the afternoon of April 14, 2020, dozens of firefighters arrived at an Amazon warehouse in Fresno, California, as thick plumes of smoke poured from the roof of the 880,000-square-foot warehouse. Some 220 solar panels and other equipment at the facility, known as FAT1, were damaged by the three-alarm fire, which was caused by "an undetermined electrical event within the solar system mounted on top of the roof," Leland Wilding, Fresno's fire investigator, wrote in an incident report. A little over a year later, about 60 firefighters were called to an even larger Amazon facility in Perryville, Maryland, to put out a two-alarm blaze, local news outlets reported. In the intervening months, at least four other Amazon fulfillment centers caught fire or experienced electrical explosions due to failures with their solar energy-generating systems, according to internal company documents viewed by CNBC. CNBC Wisconsin city seeks specialized fitness program for its firefighters with Mayo Clinic The city of La Crosse and Mayo Clinic Health Systems are teaming up to provide specialized fitness programs to the city's firefighters. The Finance & Personnel Committee approved a service agreement on Thursday, outlining that Mayo will help develop and present a series of fitness programs to improve the health and ability of La Crosse's firefighters. "I think it's a wonderful opportunity," said La Crosse Fire Chief Jeffrey Schott. Schott said this has been in the works for the last three years after a few doctors with Mayo expressed a "passion" for firefighter fitness. Mayo would develop "tactical" fitness routines for La Crosse firefighters by using data from previous injury reports, ride along observations, and input from firefighters.
