Husband, wife injured in propane explosion inside Lufkin home VIDEO: Two Lufkin residents were injured when propane ignited and exploded in their home Thursday. According to Sheriff Tom Selman, the home on Junge Road was destroyed in the explosion, and the two residents, a married couple, were injured. Firefighters said that the homeowner was working on an issue with the hot water heater in the attic when propane ignited. The man and woman were both injured; the wife was slightly injured, while the husband sustained burns to his body, Selman said. Firefighters from several volunteer fire departments around the area responded, Selman said. Chief Eddie Sweet of Moffett VFD said that approximately 20,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the fire after the explosion in the house. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Williamson County EMS adding resources in Round Rock to keep up with growth Williamson County EMS is investing in Round Rock to keep up with the area's population growth. Williamson County EMS is adding additional resources to its station at 1781 E. Old Settlers Blvd., next to the county's J.B. and Hallie Jester Annex. The agency is adding a second 24-hour ambulance at the station, adding six medics, in order to better serve Round Rock residents. The agency is also expanding existing service by partnering with the Round Rock Fire Department to put an ambulance at Fire Station 6, located at 2919 Joe Dimaggio Blvd., near Dell Diamond. According to Williamson County EMS, this will provide more hours of coverage and enhanced response to the north and eastern parts of Round Rock. Williamson County said over the past five years, call volume in the Round Rock area has increased by almost 30%. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Texas wildfire season wears down rural, volunteer fire departments This summer's brutal wildfire season is taking its toll on rural fire departments. "It went from just mowing one day to 60 acres on fire and seven days worth of us being out here," said one of 35 volunteer firefighters in Centerville, Texas, Colton Adams. His father, Fire Chief John Adams, says his men sacrifice their lives to protect their communities. "They get up in the middle of the night, they get up from their Christmas table, they get up from the birthday party and they come to something like this," Chief Adams said pointing to an ashen field. "They don't draw a paycheck." Just as Chief Adams was explaining the hard work his volunteer firefighters put in, his radio alarm went off. "Here we go." This extended dry and hot weather easily turns small sparks into fiery blazes and has worn out a department, where most firefighters already have other full time jobs and responsibilities. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Waco Fire Department responded to Ferrari fire in viral video VIDEO: A viral 12-minute, 20-second video posted to YouTube captured the moment an influencer caught a Ferrari sports car on fire in a Waco field while racing it through the dry grass. The Waco Fire Department responded to the incident last month in the 4300 block of South 12th St. Road after a hectic 9-1-1 call spurred firefighters into action. "We got half an acre on fire, let's focus on getting the vehicles out," responding units told the dispatcher. "Do you want me to get another unit out that way and have them swing by and pick up a brush truck?" the dispatcher responded. "Yeah, go ahead and get a brush truck en route just in case this starts to spread on us," the firefighters on the scene responded. The fire did spread, destroying the Ferrari and minivan that initiated the race and blaze but was extinguished by firefighters. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Arson investigation underway after inferno engulfs Florida mechanic shop An arson investigation is underway after a raging inferno tore through a mechanic shop in Miami on Friday morning. At 5:20 a.m., the City of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue responded to reports of a fire at the scene. Firefighters arrived to find a vehicle fire raging on the exterior of the mechanic shop located near the intersection of Northwest Seventh Avenue and 79th Street. Video footage from the scene captured the flames shooting out from multiple vehicles parked within the premises. Their fire attack, which included extending hand lines, quickly brought the situation under control. Within minutes, the inferno was contained, and the fire was prevented from spreading to the interior of the structure. The business was closed at the time of the incident. WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI Buried alive twice, retired NYC firefighter shares harrowing 9/11 experience VIDEO: As another anniversary of 9/11 sits on the horizon, officials at Seneca East Local Schools are paying tribute. "As I'm taking my last breaths of life, I realized that my life was over and I did something I hadn't done in a long time, I closed my eyes and said a prayer," Joe Torrillo, a retired lieutenant with the New York City Fire Department said. Those prayers were answered. Torrillo, along with four other firefighters, were rescued from the rubble of the south tower collapse. "About 25 minutes later they found a void and they found four of us. They pulled us out and they put me on a stretcher, and they ran, they put me on the deck of a boat on the Hudson River," Torrillo said. Torrillo, near death, thought he was safe, and then the north tower collapsed. WTVG-TV ABC/CW 13 TOLEDO Belgium firefighters spend a week with California firefighters VIDEO: Ten firefighters from Belgium are spending the week with the Fresno Fire Department. "We have a small organization in Belgium that tries to bring firefighters to the U.S. to visit the fire department and to do some hands-on training, to do ride along to see how the job is done over here and to make a comparison on how we do it," said Marc Opstal who is a Battalion Chief in Belgium. This is the fourth visit for firefighters from Belgium. The first group visited in 1999. Both Belgium and Fresno firefighters are learning from each other and exchanging ideas every day. They discuss what they have in common and what makes things a little different back at home. "One of the biggest differences is the way the fire stations are spread out throughout the city. We have less fire stations, longer response times, and we also don't use fire engines as first responders," said Chief Opstal. KSEE-TV NBC 24 FRESNO 144 Fallen Firefighters to be Honored at NASCAR Xfinity Series Race at Kansas Speedway Whelen Engineering, a global leader in the emergency warning industry for more than 70 years, Richard Childress Racing (RCR), and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) have teamed up to honor fallen fire heroes at the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on September 9, 2023, at Kansas Speedway. RCR's No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet will debut a special paint scheme in honor of the 144 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2022, and in previous years. "We're proud to support NFFF and help honor those who've lost their lives in the line of duty," said RCR's No. 2 driver, Sheldon Creed. All 144 names are memorialized on the deck lid of the car. These names were added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in May of this year. RCR RACING First responders in one Wisconsin county use 3 words to locate people in emergencies Fond du Lac County is making use of new, clever technology to get first responders to the right location. The technology, called "what3words," converts numeric GPS coordinates into words. The words are then decoded by first responders using the what3words app in the field. Fond du Lac County Communications Director Amy Haase says this eliminates the risk of typing in a wrong number for GPS coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds or decimal degrees. When a person calls 911, their GPS location is automatically received. But instead of numbers, dispatchers and first responders with what3words can share a location as "crown.friend.super," for example. The what3words app acts as a compass or sends the coordinates to a navigation app like Google Maps, Waze, or Bing Maps. WBAY-TV ABC 2 GREEN BAY PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
