HOOD COUNTY NEWS - METERED SITE Related: Obituary for Stephen Dale "Steve" Boynton Vacant house in San Antonio destroyed by fire; cars in nearby lot damaged by flames San Antonio fire investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a vacant house fire on the city's West Side early Friday morning. The fire was called in around 4:15 a.m. at a home in the 1000 block of North Zarzamora Street, not far from Delgado Street and Ruiz Street. Firefighters said the fire originated near the back end of the structure. The home is considered a total loss. The house was boarded up, so access to get inside was a major challenge, fire officials said. The SAFD said there was a lot of garbage inside the home, an indication that squatters or homeless could have been inside. There was no gas or electricity connected. Firefighters say several cars in a car lot next to the house were also damaged as a result of the fire. No injuries were reported. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO ‘A ticking time bomb': Fire chief seeks safety changes for dangerous Eastland County road As travelers enter Desdemona Texas on FM 8, a particularly steep curve with little signage has caused more than its share of rollover wrecks. Desdemona Fire Chief Johnny Hart says he and his crew respond to multiple wrecks a year in that one location. "At least two or three times a year we have a rollover truck here. This year – we've had seven," says Hart. So far there have been no fatalities — a streak Hart and the rest of the town would like to continue. Though with each passing day, the potential for death looms. Hart says he believes it's only a matter of time. "Just an area of concern all the time. As you can see, all the debris and everything around here. What really brought it all to light was this last accident," says Hart. The most recent accident saw a car transport vehicle and gravel truck collide in flames, each driver thankfully walking away with their lives. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Free training helps improve diversity at Pflugerville Fire Department The Pflugerville Fire Department says it has already improved its diversity after providing free in-house training to cadets. Those interested in becoming a firefighter usually have to pay about $10,000 or more for their firefighter and EMT certification, said Chief Nick Perkins. The fee especially poses a financial hardship for many marginalized communities, Perkins said. ESD No. 2, also known as the Pflugerville Fire Department, is paying the certification fee for those in its in-house program. The district set apart $1 million in its yearly budget to cover the fees and salaries of those in the program, in addition to providing the training, Perkins said. He said that if fiscally possible, the district will continue to cover the certification fee for its free six-month training series. The fire was called in around 12:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Washington Street, not far from Turner Street and East Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found the fire in an external brick garage. The roof of the structure collapsed, but they managed to put the fire out quickly and keep the other surrounding structures safe, fire officials said. The SAFD said the owner of the garage had been using it as a wood working shop. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is not currently known. An investigation team is looking into how it started. The San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department both answered the call. A damage estimate to the structure was not released. DAILY PRESS FDNY makes an explosive point about potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries VIDEO/PHOTOS: The FDNY on Wednesday lit a lithium-ion battery on fire to demonstrate how dangerous that kind a blaze can be if not handled properly. "We want the public to know, to be aware that it's a danger," FDNY Chief of Operations John Esposito said during the demo at the Randall's Island Fire Academy. "And just be aware of what they're charging in their house." So far this year, the Fire Department has attributed over 130 structural fires to the batteries, most commonly seen in e-bikes and smartphones. Esposito suggested refraining from charging the batteries overnight and near the front door, so as not to lock yourself in your home in the event of a blaze. "It explodes and it shoots the cells of the battery throughout the apartment or throughout the area," Esposito explained. That is, it did until its old ambulance, a 2002 model purchased eight years ago from the Terre Haute Fire Department, gave up the ghost. On Thursday, Jack Jaeger, RHIC executive director, and Union Health Foundation President Joel Harbaugh introduced a shiny new mobile simulation unit, a refurbished 2015 ambulance acquired thanks to a $50,000 gift from the foundation. "The main point is the small hospitals in rural areas just can't afford the kind of resources that we have," Jaeger said. PHAROS-TRIBUNE Gulfport Museum of History opens Hurricane Katrina photography exhibit VIDEO: A new exhibit at the Gulfport Museum of History unveiled a collection entitled ‘Katrina Images Revisited.' "This lady, Carmen, was just off Howard Avenue when I walked up and there was debris everywhere and she was sweeping and cleaning and she had this incredible positive attitude and she said ‘I am karate mamma and I will survive." James Bates worked for the Sun Herald as a photographer during Hurricane Katrina. The photo he calls ‘Karate Mamma' is one his favorites in the exhibit. For him, it captures the fighting spirit of people determined to rebuild what Katrina destroyed. "I think we've come back in a tremendous way. It's a testament to our people, those who have stayed, those who have come back, those who moved here after the storm and joined in on the fight. We have a great community and we have come along way from a really incredible disaster." WXXV-TV FOX/NBC/CW 25 GULFPORT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
