2 Dead Including Firefighter In New York House Fire, Ceiling Collapse VIDEO: A six-year veteran of the FDNY and a civilian died Sunday in a Brooklyn house fire that trapped a team of firefighters after a partial ceiling collapse, city officials said. Firefighter Timothy Klein, 31, was one of more than 100 FDNY members responding to the Avenue N residence in Canarsie — that caught fire shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday — when conditions turned deadly. A second body was later recovered but could not be identified, the NYPD said. Hours earlier, city officials at a press briefing said one resident of the home could not be located. Firefighters were inside the residence when its deteriorating structure prompted officials to call for an evacuation, Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. Before they could do so, Klein and three other FDNY members became trapped when part of the ceiling collapsed. The city fire department arrived on the scene in minutes, but their equipment couldn't reach the source of the blaze somewhere in the basement. Firefighters fought from a distance as flames engulfed walls and jumped floors. Just an hour after firefighters arrived, the iconic bronze dome topping the building crashed to the ground. Hundreds, then thousands, of residents gathered to watch as the fire burned throughout the night. When morning came, all that remained was a skeleton of broken walls enclosing a mass of blackened debris. The Oregon State Capitol was gone. By the time the smoke cleared, the fire had caused nearly a million dollars worth of property damage and destroyed priceless state records. It also left one firefighter dead. Eighteen-year-old Floyd McMullen had been a college student working at the east Salem firehouse in exchange for lodging.
