Newest member of San Antonio Fire Department arson bureau helps investigators detect ignitable liquids VIDEO: The San Antonio Fire Department has a new asset to their arson bureau -- Bruno, the ignitable liquid detection K-9. SAFD has many tools to help rescue crews fight fires and save lives. While we're used to seeing firefighters jumping off their rigs, springing into action, and fighting fires, a part of the department you don't usually see is the arson bureau. "I would be able to do firefighting and the possibility of doing law enforcement as well and then marry that with possibly the K-9 deal. It was just a dream for me," said Aaron Romero, an arson investigator with SAFD. Romero and other investigators work to determine if fires were intentionally set, a tough job if it weren't for help from a four-legged co-worker. Bruno is a 2-year-old lab mix, and he's certified to detect ignitable liquid. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Molten glass leak sends 6 employees, firefighter to hospital in Wichita Falls Vitro Architectural Glass has released a statement regarding the safety incident that sent multiple employees to the hospital Sunday. The statement reads as follows: "A glass leak occurred at the Wichita Falls plant of Vitro Flat Glass, LLC. The furnace of line number two developed a leak allowing hot, molten glass to escape from the vessel. The molten glass caused materials under the furnace to ignite. Wichita Falls Fire and EMS was called to the plant to help seal the leak. Six glass plant employees were taken to United Regional Hospital for treatment of heat stress. Plant and engineering specialists will be working to determine the root cause of the glass leak and identify any required long-term repairs." Vitro also said at least one firefighter was transported with heat-related stress. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN House fire breaks out in Corpus Christi VIDEO: A house fire broke out in a family's two story home early Saturday morning. Emergency crews were called at 6:20 a.m. after smoke detectors went off and warned the family about the fire. Corpus Christi Fire Department arrived on scene three minutes later at the house located on MacArthur and Burnet St. The flames were under control in about 20 minutes. Engine 10 was the first unit on the scene with Engine 3 arriving shortly after to help. Unfortunately, the second floor of the home was destroyed by the flames. The Red Cross has now stepped in to assist the family. Fire investigators said the fire was caused by an electrical wiring issue. One resident was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene. Fortunately, no firefighters were injured. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Blaze in Washington County near Lake Somerville burns two homes VIDEO: Fire crews worked through the night to battle a fire that has burned through 300 acres. Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Tim Hamff tells KBTX the fire is about 20% contained. Two homes were lost in the blaze but no injuries have been reported. Sunday night, crews were cutting down trees to prevent the fire from spreading outside of the fire line. Monday morning, an update from the Washington County Office of Emergency Management said multiples crews remain on the scene fighting the fire and the Texas Forestry Service has two STRIKE teams on scene. Bluebonnet Electric has six bucket trucks on the scene to assist in clearing rights-of-way and working to replace infrastructure damaged by the fire. Evacuation orders are still in place for Schulenberg lane KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Portable, wearable device for rapid gas analysis created by researcher at University of Texas at Arlington A University of Texas at Arlington electrical engineering researcher is creating a portable, wearable device for rapid gas analysis that could detect illness immediately. Yuze "Alice" Sun, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, said the device will play an important role in health care, industrial and workplace safety, environmental monitoring and defense and national security sectors. For her research, she received a $550,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant from the Partnerships for Innovation–Research Partnerships program, which aims to take devices developed in the laboratory to the marketplace more quickly. The title of the project is: "PFI-RP: Portable integrated photonic micro-gas chromatography system for rapid gas analysis." UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - ARLINGTON Horse Stuck in Mud Saved by Denton Fire Officials, Volunteers VIDEO: A horse stuck in the mud was rescued by Denton County Fire Department officials and volunteers Sunday. Officials said they received a call Sunday morning shortly after 7 a.m. and later arrived at the scene, where they found the horse, laying on its side and unable to get up. Firefighters dug through the mud and underneath the horse so the rope could be applied and used to help get the animal out. Ropes were eventually ineffective and even at one point, a tractor was used. A winch was eventually used successfully. A veterinarian was on the scene with medication and assisted in taking care of the horse, who is still resting with IV fluids, food and water and is with the owners. One firefighter was submerged in the mud all the way to his waist to assist the horse and when trying to get out himself, was suctioned in and injured his knee. VIDEO: Hand Sanitizer Burns In Oklahoma Manufacturing Building A massive fire burns down an old manufacturing building in Chickasha. Chief Tony Samaniego with the Chickasha Fire Department estimates 1.5 million gallons of hand sanitizer fueled the fire at the Chickasha Manufacturing Building on Sunday. The intense flames and black billowing smoke drew a crowd. "They were tall, they were big, and they were hot," said Alicia Musshafen, who lives nearby. "I was really in shock that the building was engulfed." Nearly 100 firefighters from 15 different agencies responded the fire, only to find their tactics had to change. "Because of the nature of the incident we went into a defensive strategy immediately," said Chief Samaniego. That means they couldn't attack the blaze with water because of the highly flammable and hazardous contents inside. The name of the game was "battle of the barrel." The team that could use its hose to blast a barrel on a pulley along a cable above Union Street to the opposing team's side won. Although there was talk of a championship, teams weren't minding the score too much by the end of competition. "We are just here to have fun," Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jim Bent said. "I think it's a good event to get all of the firefighters together." Saturday's activities included a parade and a live disc jockey. Firefighters from at least 60 departments across Pennsylvania were expected to arrive in Somerset throughout the four-day conference that began Thursday.
