Elderly woman dead after fire rips through home in Spring VIDEO: An 81-year-old woman is dead after a fire ripped through a Spring home early Saturday morning, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. The fire was first reported at about 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 24300 block of Hampton Terrace Lane in Spring. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the structure and received a report that there was an elderly woman trapped inside. According to the spring Fire Department, fire crews made entry into the residence, but were unable to locate the woman. They proceeded to attack the blaze and knocked down the fire. Previously, a representative with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office had said fire crews had attempted to make entry into the residence but were unable to due to the heavy fire. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Austin's new budget includes a significant investment in EMS, Reimagining of Public Safety The budget Austin City Council approved on Aug. 23 for the 2020-2021 Fiscal Year comes with a number of different investments in Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services. Much of the discussion around Austin's new budget revolved around the ways the budget begins a process of transitioning around $150 million dollars from the Austin Police Department into other areas of public health and safety over the course of the next year. But the budget encompasses many areas outside of policing. While funding for medics may not have been the topic most residents weighed in on during public comment, the dollars set aside for ATCEMS represent another key theme in this budget. Jasper Brown, the Chief of Staff for ATCEMS, said that based on his 23 years of experience working with the department, ATCEMS can have good years and bad years when it comes to how well the approved budget meets the needs the department has expressed. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Moulton man nominated to serve as Lavaca County EMS director Lavaca County's EMS Advisory Committee unanimously nominated a Moulton native to serve as director of the county's EMS program, officials said Friday. The nomination of Michael Furrh, who currently serves as the Colorado County EMS director, will be considered for approval at Lavaca County Commissioners Court at 10 a.m. Monday. "I've very excited," Furrh said Friday. "I'm from here and I've known most of the people that already work for the Lavaca County EMS for years, so it is really nice to come back home." Furrh's selection came after Debbie Fishbeck, the former EMS director, left the position on July 13. Melissa Leopold has served as the county's interim EMS director since. In addition to working for Colorado County EMS for about the last five years, Furrh is in his second term as a city council member for the City of Shiner and the assistant fire chief of the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department. He was also the embodiment of a true leader, serving in the San Antonio Fire Department for 37 years. After retirement, Daniel and his wife Gloria traveled, spent time with family, drinking coffee over his crossword puzzle, praying the rosary, and taking his daily walk. Publicly, Daniel is best known as the chief architect and founder of the SAFD's Arson Bureau, paving the way for the modern Arson Investigator. He joined the SAFD in 1955, after working several years for the National Shirt Shop. KENS CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Lightning strike likely cause of house fire, Hutto Fire Department says Early Saturday morning, a Hutto mom and her two-year-old child were awoken by a loud boom just minutes before a portion of their home caught fire. Hutto Fire Department says lightning likely struck the home during the morning's severe weather, sparking the flames. Though disoriented and panicked, the mother cradled her child in her arms and went to the living room, HFD Fire Marshal Eric Woods said in a briefing from the Hutto subdivision Saturday morning. She said she didn't see flames or smoke, but thought she smelled gas — prompting her to call the gas company who told her to exit the home immediately. HFD says the boom of the lightning was so loud neighbors initially thought their home had been hit. They looked out of their windows and saw the back of the woman's home on fire and called 911. 6-alarm blaze ravages warehouse in Philadelphia; 1 firefighter injured VIDEO: Hundreds of firefighters battled a six-alarm fire at a warehouse in the Tioga-Nicetown section of Philadelphia Sunday morning. Fire Commissioner Adam Theil said that about half of all on-duty firefighters were at the scene battling the blaze at a warehouse on the 3300 block of Stokley Avenue. The fire, which started around 2 a.m., quickly grew so large that it could be seen from miles away. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof as part of the building collapsed. Officials said one firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated at the hospital. No other injuries were reported. The city-block long building reportedly houses a paper company called Treco Fibematics. The opposite end of the building is said to be owned by Temple University and houses administrative offices. "I open up my bedroom window (and) my curtains, and I was like, 'you've got to be joking,'" said Wanda Compton of the moment she saw the flames. On the way to the fire, the IFD truck collided with a Silver Jeep Liberty driven by a 71-year-old woman at the intersection. IFD officials say, "the car collided with the engine at the intersection, affixed itself on the engine windshield and traveled about 100 feet before disengaging from the windshield and sliding another 100 feet to a stop." The engine sustained significant damage to the front and side, with equipment ripped from its holders and windshield glass strewn throughout the interior, according to officials. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Commissioner to FDNY Members: Forgo 9/11 Events This Year New York's first responders were given an unusual warning this week, a first since the Sept. 11 terror attacks: skip this year's in-person anniversary events. In a letter addressed to members of the FDNY, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro cautioned against the department's members attending anniversary events this year as the coronavirus pandemic continues to threaten the safety of everyone, especially retired members and families of 9/11 victims that are at a greater risk due to health and age. "From a health and safety perspective, the FDNY strongly recommends that our members forego participating in 9/11 gatherings and events this year," Nigro said. "However, the Department respects our traditions and will authorize certain events if currently accepted protective conditions can be adhered to." The commissioner outlined guidelines required for FDNY members sponsoring memorial events at or nearby FDNY facilities. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
