Nueces County ESD No. 2 fire chief retires Nueces County Emergency Services District No. 2 first responders and community members said a bittersweet goodbye Friday afternoon to chief Dale Scott, as they celebrated his retirement. Scott dedicated 41 years serving Flour Bluff, the Island and rural areas of Nueces and Kleberg County. He said he has plans to enjoy his retirement in Dallas, but added — his time being ESD No. 2's fire chief has been his whole life. "Serving the community, being there for the community, making sure we were taking care of the community in an emergency situation. I'm going to miss that," Scott said. "They are being left in very good and capable hands. I hope (the community will) support the new fire chief the way they supported me." Wes Beseda will be taking over as Nueces County ESD No.2's fire chief. KRIS-TV NBC/CW+ 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Austin firefighters walk 22 miles to support battalion chief battling cancer VIDEO: Austin firefighters walked over 22 miles Saturday for the "Long Walk for Travis" to support Battalion Chief Travis Maher. "The firefighters, on their own, very organically came together and wanted to do something to honor one of our firefighters who's suffering from cancer, and the prognosis is not very good," Bob Nicks, president of the Austin Firefighters Association said. Maher was exposed to deadly carcinogens when he went to work the debris pile in New York after 9/11 during his time with the Austin Fire Department. The group is walking to all the fire stations he's worked at. "Travis has a long and storied career. He was on the Hazardous Materials team, he was on Special Operations, he's a member of Texas Task Force 1," Nicks said. VIDEO: Fire crews in Minnesota knock down large fire in soil supplier garage Fire crews in Maple Grove knocked down a large fire early Sunday morning that burned at a building belonging to a soil supplier. The Maple Grove Fire Department was called just after 4:30 p.m. for a report of a fire at a campground on Brockton Lane North. However, when crews arrived they determined the fire was actually burning at a building belonging to a soil supplier called Commercial Black Dirt Inc., just north of the campgrounds. When crews arrived at the scene, they found the metal building engulfed in flames. Crews were called in from Rogers and Dayton to help with water supply as Maple Grove firefighters battled the blaze. The fire wasn't declared under control until about 6 a.m. Firefighters say the building is a garage for equipment. The building and equipment inside are considered a total loss, the fire department says. KMSP-TV FOX 9 MINNEAPOLIS New fire station in Utah designed with firefighter mental health in mind The Unified Fire Authority's newest station in Midvale was designed with mental health in mind. Station 125, located at 655 W. Center Street, not only features private rooms and bathrooms for firefighters working long hours, but also larger common rooms. Capt. Kelly Millard said those areas will help to build a sense of connection throughout his team. "That's great with this station. We are able to sit down, talk, joke, and that's how a lot of us get through those hard calls," Millard said. Unified Fire Chief Dominic Burchett feels these small improvements will end up making a big difference. "We deal with a lot, we see a lot, stuff that we can't forget often times," Burchett said. "So now, we are trying to predict into the future, of what's going to be an issue and try to resolve it with this station's design." KSL-TV NBC 5 SALT LAKE CITY 36 injured after ‘rare' pocket of severe turbulence hits Honolulu-bound plane shortly before landing VIDEO: Thirty-six people were injured Sunday, including 11 seriously, when a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu hit severe turbulence about 30 minutes before landing. The turbulence sent passengers flying out of their seats. Paramedics and emergency medical technicians treated patients — ranging in age from 14 months to adults — for a long list of injuries, including serious head injuries, cuts, bruises, nausea, and loss of consciousness. Hawaiian Airlines said Flight 35 from Phoenix "landed safely" in Honolulu about 10:50 a.m. The Airbus A330 was full, carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members. Jon Snook, Hawaiian Air executive vice president and chief operating officer, told reporters the "fasten seatbelt" was on at the time of the incident. He added that three flight attendants were among those injured. HAWAII NEWS NOW Mississippi moms and babies are dying - this training teaches first responders how to save their lives Matt Greer of Brookhaven was driving home from his shift at the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services, where he works as a flight nurse, when he got a call from his younger sister. A few days earlier, she had given birth to a healthy baby girl after an uncomplicated pregnancy. Now, she told him she had a headache. He asked her to check her blood pressure: 140/90. For most patients, that reading isn't concerning. For a pregnant or postpartum woman, however, it's an indication of preeclampsia. Greer told her to go to the hospital and eventually she did, getting treatment to prevent seizure and stroke. But Greer thinks things might have gone very differently had he not completed a new training run by the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services just a few weeks before his sister called.
