Mom rescues 2 children, but dies while trying to save baby from Houston house fire, officials say A mother and her infant died in a tragic house fire in north Houston on Saturday morning, according to officials. The Houston Fire Department said firefighters responded to the fire at a home on Heaney Street near Tidwell and Bauman Road. Officials said the woman, 31-year-old Giovanna Cabrera, was able to rescue two of her children before going back into the burning home for her 1-year-old, Gabriel, but she never made it out. The victim's sister, Giselle Bueno, said the two surviving children are nine and six years old and are now with their father. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family cover funeral costs and support her two surviving children, as well as her parents who lost everything in the fire. Bueno told ABC13 that the smoke and flames overcame her sister. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Harris County: Cy-Fair Fire Department earns No. 1 customer service ranking After missing the No. 1 spot by two-hundredths of a point in 2022, the Cy-Fair Fire Department was at the top of the list for customer service among 57 similarly sized agencies across the U.S. in EMS Survey Team's 2023 rankings. EMS Survey Team is a Michigan-based firm that distributes surveys to patients following their incidents and analyzes the data in a monthly report to participating departments. Justin Reed, assistant chief of emergency medical services for the CFFD, said tracking patient experience ratings is optional for fire departments, but the data helps leadership understand what they're doing well and potential areas where there is room for improvement. EMS Survey Team reported the CFFD exceeded the national average score in every category for 2023, and Reed said 86% of survey responses are the highest score in each category. COMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER 5 dogs saved from mobile home fire in south Bexar County, firefighters say Bexar County Emergency Services District firefighters saved as many as five dogs from an overnight mobile home fire late Sunday night. The fire was called in around 10:40 p.m. in the 3800 block of Waterwood Pass Drive, not far from Interstate 37 and Elmendorf in south Bexar County. Firefighters said they arrived to find a mobile home engulfed in flames. They quickly saved five dogs from a kennel area next to the mobile home and worked to keep the fire from spreading to a vehicle and another structure nearby. Fire officials said they got a quick knock down of the fire and there were no reported injuries. The residents of the mobile home were not home at the time of the fire. Investigators believe the fire may have started in a chicken coop, but that has to be confirmed by the Fire Marshal. A damage estimate is also not currently known. Both vehicles became fully engulfed. The Robinson Volunteer Fire Department and Hewitt Fire Department also responded to the scene. Robinson VFD says all fire departments worked in tandem to extinguish the fire. Texas DPS says the driver of the Ford was transported to Parkland Health in Dallas. VIDEO: 4-alarm fire burns warehouse in Missouri Fire crews worked to contain a four-alarm warehouse fire Saturday morning. Eighty-five firefighters were called to the scene of the five-story building that partially collapsed. The building was vacant at the time of the fire. "This is one of those where we surround the structure, and basically, I don't want to say surround and drown, but that's essentially what it is," said Garon Mosby, a St. Louis Fire Department captain. "Large amounts of water from the exterior—not committing resources inside." The fire started before 6 a.m. at First and O'Fallon streets in downtown St. Louis. Mosby said it's unclear what started it. "It was just a tremendous amount of fire—I'll say for 6 o'clock in the morning for the fire to be that far ahead of us—so that we can't go in. So, that's concerning, but nothing on the cause right now," he said. KSDK-TV NBC 5 ST. LOUIS Handmade table presented in honor of fallen Illinois firefighter VIDEO: It's been 41 years since Peoria firefighter Vernon "Butch" Gudat died in the line of duty, but Friday, the department and his family members celebrated his legacy. John Smith worked for the Peoria Fire Department for 29 years. After he retired, he picked up woodworking. Smith's hobby of building tables started when Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger asked Smith to build a table for the new firehouse, Station 4. Smith has finished several tables since then, the most recent being a dinner table for Fire Station 10 in honor of Gudat. "I knew right away that the table I built for Station 10 was going to incorporate some kind of memorial for Capt. Gudat," Smith said. Station 10 is where Gudat was working when he responded to a fire in downtown Peoria on January 23, 1983. He died that morning in the line of duty. WEEK-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 25 PEORIA VIDEO: Fire truck overturns in Georgia, 4 firefighters onboard PHOTO: Surveillance video captured the moment an Albany fire truck overturned on Friday. The fire truck overturned on South Harding Street Friday afternoon. Crews worked over an hour to get it back turned over and cleaned up. "I heard a big old boom. That's it. I just can't even believe it," said Angel Caldwell, a witness. Officials said four firefighters were in the truck at the time of the accident. No serious injuries have been reported and all four firefighters were taken to the hospital to get checked out. Some people said they were shocked to see the aftermath of the accident. "I can't even imagine how a firetruck can even be turned over. I mean, do you see the way it is? I mean who's ever in their lifetime seen a firetruck upside down like that? It's really scary and heartbreaking," another witness said. WALB-TV NBC/ABC 10 ALBANY High School BUFF Program In Wisconsin Takes Students From Ideas To Action The Howard and Suamico Fire Departments, in tandem with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC), are helping to empower young students to become firefighters through the high school program, Building Up Future Firefighters (BUFF). The Suamico Fire Department first attended the Bay Port High School career fair two years ago with little hopes of finding many students willing to participate in a firefighting internship. However, the opposite proved to be true. "The interest that we had was alarming," said Suamico Fire Department Fire Chief Joe Bertler. After realizing their success at the career fair, the fire department applied for a grant that would allow students to complete a "Firefighter 1" certification program at Bay Port.
