A man died and his wife is hospitalized after a house exploded in Sherman on Sunday night. First responders were alerted around 8:20 p.m. to the fire at a residence on Sistrunk Street in northeast Sherman. The homeowner's son told KTEN that his father, James Bateman, died in the explosion. The Grayson County Sheriff's Office said the home collapsed on Bateman's wife. "She was talking to the guys; an extensive rescue was underway," said Sherman Fire Rescue Chief Billy Hartsfield. "They had to move a roof off the top of her; she was stuck in layers of the house." The woman was airlifted to a hospital in Plano for emergency treatment. The sheriff's office and Sherman Fire Rescue are still investigating the cause.

The Austin Fire Department shut down parts of South Congress Avenue Sunday afternoon as they battled a fire at an abandoned building in South Austin. AFD responded to the fire at 4917 South Congress Avenue at 2:41 p.m., between Sheraton Avenue and Wasson Road. Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the scene. AFD confirmed on social media that the fire started in an abandoned building and is not connected to the SOCO Pet Lounge, which is next door. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke and products of combustion coming from the building. At 3:24 p.m., AFD upgraded the fire to a second alarm for additional resources for crews working to extinguish and overhaul the fire. Within 10 minutes, crews moved to defensive mode and withdrew from inside the structure and attacked the fire from outside.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Texas A&M Forest Service battled a wildfire south of Dumas in Moore County. The North CIG Fire burned an estimated 4,012 acres before it was contained. On Feb. 21, TAMFS said there was potential for wildfire activity this week as the state observes warm, dry and breezy conditions. "Above normal temps and no rainfall will dry vegetation and areas of underlying dryness are forecast to emerge across parts of the High Plains and Southern Plains."

The former Rock Island Livestock Auction Barn had multiple buildings burn to the ground on Saturday, Feb. 24, but crews were able to save 22 cows and millions of dollars worth of surrounding homes and businesses. Rock Island Fire Department crews were called out at 5:37 p.m. to 534 34th Ave. According to Rock Island Fire Marshal Greg Marty, crews arrived within three to four minutes of the call and found a large fire already burning on the backside of a barn along the railroad tracks. The main building on fire at first stretched three city blocks, from 34th to 37th Ave. Due to the size of the fire, surrounding fire departments were called immediately. More than a dozen departments from around the county responded, many with water tankers as low water pressure became a concern.

PHOTOS: One person was injured after a crash behind a Fire and EMS station in Independence on Sunday morning. The Independence Fire/EMS Department says crews responded to a motor vehicle accident behind the Fire-EMS station at 11:17 a.m. Sunday. On-duty staff reported via radio a loud explosion sound at the station and found a full-sized pickup had struck the back of the station. The department says crews responded quickly and began treating a person who was entrapped. Medflight was requested to the scene to transport the patient, the department said. Crews were able to extricate and move the patient to the helipad for transport. Bollards, a dumpster, and fencing stopped the vehicle from entering the station, where firefighters were seated at a table with only a window separating them from the truck, officials said.

VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Today marks a grim anniversary in New York City history - on Feb. 26, 1993, shortly after noon, terrorists set off a homemade bomb in the parking garage beneath the World Trade Center's Twin Towers. Six people were killed, including a pregnant woman, and more than 1,000 were injured in the massive explosion and smoky aftermath. The towers were shuttered for weeks, and in 1995, a memorial was dedicated to the victims in Austin Tobin Plaza at the World Trade Center. Almost nine years later, the Twin Towers were destroyed on 9/11, claiming almost 3,000 lives that day, a toll that continues to mount from diseases related to the attack. A small part of the memorial for the victims of the 1993 bombing was discovered in the ruins of the complex.
