Grimes County firefighter injured in crash while responding to fire PHOTO: A Grimes County firefighter was injured Saturday afternoon while responding to a fire. The Anderson Volunteer Fire Department says one of its firefighters was on the way to help with a burning building on County Road 185 when the tanker he was driving rolled over. The firefighter has non-life-threatening injuries, according to the fire department. The empty building that caught fire Saturday was engulfed in flames. There's no word yet on what started it. The following is the full statement released on the fire department's Facebook page: "A very tragic day for AVFD! We were on a scene of a structure fire when one of our responding tankers rolled over en route to assist. Unfortunately, our firefighter had injuries but will make a full recovery. We would like to thank DPS officers, Grimes County SO, Iola VFD, CHI St Joseph EMS, and all of our community that was there to lend a hand when needed. We may be one truck down but we still will continue to provide great fire service. Thanks again and keep all first responders in your prayers." KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN 4 injuries reported following Arlington apartment fire At least four people were injured following an apartment fire in Arlington Sunday afternoon. Three of those people jumped from the second floor to escape the flames. The fourth injury was a firefighter due to heat. With temperatures near triple digits at the time of the fire, the Arlington Fire Department said they take the safety of the victims and firefighters seriously. "Early through the call, we called for a rehab unit. It's a unit that's able to come out hydrate our guys, give them IVs and cool them down, and we have medics on standby. That is not just for victims, but also firefighters," Arlington Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Pedro Arevalo explained. Officials said three units were burned, and there are as many as four to eight families displaced due to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Fort Worth home heavily damaged in fire PHOTOS: A south Fort Worth home was heavily damaged by a fire Sunday on Wilkie Way between McCart and Woodway Drive. Reports say the first crews got there to find heavy flames and smoke billowing from the roof of the two-story home. It took about 45 minutes to douse the flames and the home was a real mess. Commanders say no one was inside the home and firefighters battled it from the outside because it was too dangerous to send anyone in. They're not sure what caused it. KRLD-AM 1080 DALLAS Historic home of civil rights advocate burns down in Taylor A historic landmark in Taylor burned down early Sunday morning, the city said. The Taylor Fire Department responded to a call about a structure fire at 3:32 a.m., and when they arrived "the building was engulfed in flames," per the city. Several fire crews responded to the fire, but the home burned to the ground. An investigation is ongoing. The Taylor Police Department is considering the fire "suspicious," though the State Fire Marshal did not find that accelerants were used, a city release said. The building was home to Dr. James Lee Dickey, a physician and civil rights advocate in Taylor. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Dickey, who died in 1959, was the only African-American doctor in Taylor when he settled there after serving in World War I to help his widowed mother raise his siblings, according to the historical marker. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Fire causes ‘at least $50K' in damages at used car lot in San Antonio, owner says VIDEO: The San Antonio Fire Department responded to a used auto sales lot in the 800 block of South WW White Road shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday morning. The owner of the car lot and his nephew said they are in total disbelief. "Oh, man, my heart broke because I mean, my uncle's a very hardworking man. And to see him go through something like that, it was, it was very heartbreaking," said Asif Daredia. Daredia told KSAT he and his uncle have had to deal with a lot of criminal activity since opening the lot three years ago, but nothing like the level of damage the fire has caused. "To be honest, this side of town is a little bit rough. We do have a few break ins sometimes where I've had cases where people break the gates and they steal the batteries or the catalytic converters, which is a big issue going around in San Antonio," said Daredia. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Bosque County Wildfire One of More than 1,100 to Burn in Texas This Year VIDEO: As of Friday, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported 195 of Texas' 254 counties were under burn bans, the most at any one time since 2011. Among them is the Hardcastle Fire in Bosque County where David Carter captured the moments that allowed ranchers a sigh of relief through his camera's lens. "Those fire crews, they threw everything they had before that fire could get to that house," said Carter. His photographs show crews working by both air and land to save structures and prevent an evacuation of Walnut Springs, for which residents were told to prepare. As of Friday night, Bosque County officials reported the blaze was 45% contained with 600 acres burned. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Historic 338-year-old hotel in Massachusetts damaged in massive fire The historic Veranda House Hotel on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, was damaged Saturday after a huge blaze ripped through the building. Firefighters received a report that the hotel, which is more than 338 years old, was on fire early Saturday, the Nantucket Fire Department said in a news release. Fire officials rushed to help, entering the building without protective equipment, to ensure that no one was stranded in the inferno, the report said. Two people were found and guided out safely, the fire department said. All hotel guests were evacuated. The fire department reported that no civilians were injured in the fire. "The actions of the citizens and the Captain saved lives," the report said. As of 2:30 p.m. Saturday, firefighters continued to battle to flames. Two firefighters were taken to hospitals for suspected heat exhaustion, and another was transported for a back injury, the report said. Now those firefighters are greeted by a massive steel sculpture commemorating the work they do to protect the community. Local firefighter Brandon Russell collaborated with Laramie Public Art Coalition to create the sculpture, titled "The Vitruvian Firefighter." The large metal work is a nod to Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawing "The Vitruvian Man," said Laura Zorch McDermit, LPAC executive director. Da Vinci's original features a man with arms and legs spread with a circle drawn around the perimeter of his body. Similarly, "The Vitruvian Firefighter" features a firefighter in protective gear in the same pose. NEWS LETTER JOURNAL Reaching new heights: Ohio fire department drone offers life-saving technology at feed mill fire A quick decision to break out a new drone may have saved a life at a June 17 fire scene. Scott Wolfe was out to dinner with his family that Friday when he got a call about a fire at the MARS Horsecare facility in Dalton. Crews from multiple departments responded. A drone with thermal imaging technology the Wooster Township Fire Department had acquired just days earlier was about to be thrust into service for the first time, and Wolfe was the only one on staff qualified to operate it. Dinner would have to wait. Wolfe, a volunteer water rescue team diver for the department and certified drone pilot, raced out after swinging by the station to pick up the drone and put it through a quick test run. The DJI M30T is one of the newest drones on the market, said Wolfe. It's ready to fly within 30 seconds of being turned on and can soar as high as 400 feet within 20 seconds. THE DAILY RECORD - METERED SITE Park outdoors: Ford expands recall for possible engine fires Ford is expanding a recall of SUVs and telling owners to park them outside after a series of engine fires that can happen even when the ignition switches are off. The company also announced Friday that it's recalling another 100,000 SUVs in the U.S. for a different problem that also causes engine fires. In May, Ford recalled about 39,000 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator large SUVs in the U.S. and told owners to park them outdoors and away from buildings. On Friday, the company expanded that recall to cover more than 66,000 vehicles from the 2021 model year after getting reports of five more fires. At the time of the first recall, Ford didn't know what was causing the fires. But on Friday the company said it has traced the cause to printed circuit boards that are susceptible to an electrical short. The company says it has reports of 21 fires and one injury, but no reports of fires extending to buildings. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK ‘It's like being a kid out there:' South Carolina fire department hockey team competes for charity When they're not suppressing fires or responding to medical emergencies, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department, along with other Grand Strand first responders, can be found on the ice. "It's like being a kid out there," said Ross Porter, an engineer and paramedic for the City of Myrtle Beach. A group of about 25 make up the roster of the MBFD's hockey team. "I mean we got guys that just started playing last year," said firefighter Matt Chiarizio. "Never played ice hockey before in an organized league. They bought the equipment and now they're on the team." For the last five years, the team has gotten out on the ice to have fun and take a break while also raising money for charity. Since there isn't an ice rink in the Grand Strand, however, the team has to make the trek either up to Wilmington or down to Charleston to play or practice.
