Video shows White Settlement police officers rescue man from burning car Two White Settlement police officers are being called heroes after they rescued a man from a burning car in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 29. Police said officers responded around 2:40 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Cherry Lane to a crash where a car struck a pole. The crash caused the car to catch fire, police said. According to police, arriving officers learned there were two occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash and that the driver was able to escape. The front passenger, however, was unconscious inside the car, police said. Police said officers were able to pull the man out of the burning vehicle as medical crews arrived. "I want to highlight the heroic actions by the brave police officers who serve our community," said White Settlement Police Chief Christopher Cook. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Lacy Lakeview Fire Chief retires after 13 years with department After 13 years of service, the Lacy Lakeview Fire Department is wishing a fond farewell to Fire Chief Patty Byars-Faulkner. The department said congratulations and farewell to Byars-Faulkner on Friday, July 28. Byars-Faulkner had served as the City's Fire Chief since 2013, after having already served as Fire Marshal since 2010. According to the City, Byars-Faulkner began her career with the Dallas Fire Department in 1989. She earned her paramedic patch in 1991, joined the ranks as the first woman on the High Angle Rescue Team before being promoted to Driver/Engineer and completed her tri-certification by attending Basic Police Academy in 2009. Byars-Faulkner is a graduate of the Texas Fire Chiefs Academy, the Inaugural class for Fire Executive Management Training and the SFFMA Fire Chief Academy. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Update: Honey Grove firefighter injured in wreck responding to call dies A Honey Grove firefighter injured in the line of duty earlier this month died Sunday morning. Volunteer firefighter Evan Brown was in a crash July 9 and had been in intensive care at Medical City Hospital in Plano. According to the Honey Grove Fire Department, Brown was responding to another crash call when he struck a cow in the road in his personal vehicle. His vehicle rolled, and Brown was ejected and severely injured. The Honey Grove Fire Department is arranging for first responders to stand watch by Evan at the funeral home. KXII-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV/FOX 12 SHERMAN Large apartment fire in Pasadena damages at least 20 units VIDEO: Emergency crews responded to a large fire at an apartment in Pasadena Friday. The fire happened in the 3600 block of South Shaver Street. Video from the scene showed crews spraying water on flames coming through the roof of the complex. Multiple agencies responded to the scene. According to Chief Fire Marshal David Brannon with the Pasadena Fire Department, 24 units responded to the scene along with around 75 personnel. The Houston Fire Department provided mutual aid. Brannon said the call for the fire came in around 1:36 p.m. When units arrived, they found heavy fire coming from some of the apartment units. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Dangerous weekend in the sky - Multiple small plane crashes recorded across the US VIDEO: Two people were killed and another two injured in a mid-air collision Saturday involving a helicopter and a gyrocopter near Oshkosh, Wisconsin, officials said, while another two other people were killed in a separate incident in which a small plane crashed into a nearby lake. A spokesperson for the Experimental Aircraft Association told CBS News in a statement that the mid-air collision occurred a little before 12:30 p.m. local time in the area of the Wittman Regional Airport. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department told the EAA that two people were killed and two injured in that collision, the spokesperson said. The National Transportation Safety Board informed the EAA that the aircraft belonged to individuals attending the EAA's annual fly-in convention in Oshkosh, but who were not involved in the air show, the spokesperson added. "It's been a little chaotic, but we've been staying in front of it," said Chief Dean Deasy, about what the department and town have experienced since flooding on July 10. The town's volunteer first responders have been working almost non-stop since the first flood hit on the afternoon of July 10. "We almost went around the clock from that point forward," said Deasy. "Presently, right now, I have over 146 hours dealing just with storm issues on that, and a lot of my members have well over 100 hours that they've put into this." WPTZ-TV NBC 5 PLATTSBURGH New study to address training, resources for shipboard fires at South Carolina ports VIDEO: The North Charleston City Council voted unanimously to approve a study identifying and addressing risks for onboard ship fires at Charleston Ports. The study is being funded by a grant received from the South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs totaling $247,381. The main goal of this study is to ensure marine firefighters and port workers have the proper training and resources to act in an emergency. "It's going to really help us and tell us what we need to know to protect our city on the waterways," North Charleston City Councilmember Jerome Heyward said. Shipboard fires are different from a typical fire response due to the severity of the spread and what dangers it could pose. "Ship fires are very unique fires," Fire Chief Greg Bulanow said.
