Police recruit, firefighters struck by lightning in Fort Worth A Fort Worth Police Department recruit and two firefighters were injured after they were struck by lightning on Friday. Storms were in the area in the morning hours. The incident happened at the Bob Bolen Public Safety Complex where first responders receive training, according to NBC 5. The police cadets were running around the track, and the firefighters were getting ready to leave after training was canceled. NBC 5 reported the cadet was possibly struck in the ankle. He was taken to a nearby hospital and was in stable condition. The two firefighters were also struck and suffered minor injuries. They were able to continue their duties. "It's a great reminder to be cautious even if you think a storm is far away and not close enough to affect you, lightning can still strike," said Jason Spencer, the Fort Worth Police Public Information Officer. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Payne Springs Fire Rescue responds to double wide trailer fire PHOTOS: Payne Springs Fire Rescue said they responded to a double wide trailer that was on fire near Lake Arrowhead around 9:24 p.m. on Saturday. Officials said that when PSFR Chief 1 first arrived the home was already 80% involved in the fire and that there was an RV being threatened. According to authorities, one firefighter had to get their eyes washed out after getting debris in them and no other injuries were reported. Firefighters formed two attack lines and crews were able to quickly knockdown the fire before overhauling the structure, according to a PSFR post on Facebook. Officials said that the structure was without power and vacant before the fire. The Henderson County Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire. Gun Barrel City Fire Department and Eustace Fire Department also responded to the scene. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Winnsboro Fire Department starts relief fund for those affected by storms Though power is back on to most East Texans, an East Texas fire department is trying to do what it can to help ‘day to day' life return to normal. It's an effort to help Winnsboro residents recover from the damage, power loss, and the heat. Most base camps and distributions centers have closed operations now, but the impact of power outage and heat are still being felt in counties such as Wood. "It's an ongoing recovery. I feel like it's going to take several weeks if not months to recover from this," says Winnsboro Fire Chief Mark Griffin. While the cleanup of debris will continue for those affected, any real monetary help could be months away. Knowing the lengthy process to receive any state or federal funds for recovery, the fire department set up the relief fund through a Winnsboro bank. So they sent me in for a CT scan after that and found the rest of the cancer that it spread to the colon and lungs and all the lymph nodes," Popejoy said. He started chemotherapy this past Monday. "At this point I'm not able to work anymore once I started the chemotherapy. It's gotten me too weak to come in and do my job. I have to take a lot of time off," Popejoy said. WBNS-TV CBS 10 COLUMBUS PHMSA proposes all railroads must alert first responders within 10 miles of derailed train cargo under new rule Federal regulators want first responders to know exactly what they are dealing with before reaching the scene of a train derailment, because the dangerous chemicals trains carry might require a specialized response. The Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration proposed a new rule last Wednesday that would require all railroads to immediately send the details of everything aboard their trains to every emergency responder within 10 miles, as soon as the railroad becomes aware of an accident. The new rule came one day ahead of a National Transportation Safety Board hearing to scrutinize emergency responses to the fiery Feb. 3 derailment of a Norfolk Southern train outside East Palestine, Ohio. SPECTRUM NEWS 1 - METERED SITE How Arizona firefighters keep cool while working in the summer VIDEO: With the scorching summer here, Valley firefighters are not only battling fires but the oppressive heat while doing so. "When we are dealing with 110 degrees, and a fire kicks out, we are asked to act," said Captain Dave Folio with the Scottsdale Fire Department.
