Roughneck Fire in Texas Panhandle forces evacuations over the weekend VIDEO: The wildfires in the Texas Panhandle forced another town to evacuate over the weekend. The Smokehouse Creek Fire, the largest wildfire in state history, is still only 15% contained. And strong weekend winds spread the flames even more. Firefighters have made some progress containing other fires, though. Three smaller fires burning in the area are more than halfway under control. But a new wildfire popped up Sunday called the Roughneck Fire. It prompted the evacuation of Sanford, a town with about 100 residents. That fire is 25% contained now and crews believe it's stopped progressing. They allowed people to go back home. "This is a double-edged sword. It's good news that we've got a little burn scarring around that area. It's just kind of unfortunate that it scared the life out of everybody again tonight," said Deidra Thomas, the Hutchinson County public engagement coordinator. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS 1st responders, community leaders recall 19 days of terror on Austin bombings anniversary Six years ago, Austin was shaken to its core when a series of bombings terrorized the city for almost three weeks. The first of these bombings happened in northeast Austin on March 2, 2018, on Texas Independence Day. The Harris Ridge neighborhood, by all accounts, looks like a calm and peaceful neighborhood, but six years ago to the day, it was filled with chaos. "I remember in the Austin bombings, there were a lot of unknowns," said Austin-Travis County EMS Assistant Chief Wesley Hopkins. Rachael Lewis, Austin Fire Department operations public information officer, says this time six years ago was right at the beginning of her career with AFD. "As a new firefighter, I remember the effect that that had on the firefighters and our community, as a whole," she said. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Large fire reported in the woods of southwest Austin encampment PHOTOS: The Austin Fire Department tweeted about a large fire in the woods around 3:38 p.m. Saturday, stating that crews were on scene. The fire reportedly occurred behind the 4200 block of South Lamar Blvd. Svrd., and crews from both the Austin and Westlake Fire Department went deep into the woods to fight off the fire. The Austin Fire Department PIO stated that the fire occurred in an abandoned encampment, and was reported by a passerby who saw the smoke from the highway. The tweet also encouraged people to avoid the area of the fire. The fire was reported to be extinguished at 4:21 p.m. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Dishwasher flaw causes $30,000 damage and displaces apartment residents in San Antonio A dishwasher that hasn't worked since the tenant moved into the apartment has left the owner and several people displaced from their homes Sunday morning. According to the San Antonio Fire Department, the smoke was seen near the 8700 block of Marbach Road at The Legend Apartment Complex around 9:30 a.m. on the Westside. Firefighters were able to find the homeowner's dishwasher smoking and causing leakage throughout the apartment floor cascading down below to other apartments. With an estimated $30,000 in damages, the apartment tenants above and below have been displaced and are waiting for management to assign them to another building. Authorities share that no injuries were reported and the owner has yet to be found and notified regarding the damage. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Fire spreads to two homes on Chicago's South Side A witness jumped into action after seeing a large house fire in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood early Monday morning. Flames started shooting from the house just after 2 a.m. at 81st Street and South Shore Drive. The fire spread to a second house, causing smoke damage. A man told CBS 2 he was inside a CTA bus when he noticed the flames. The man and the bus driver quickly stepped in to help. "Me and the bus driver seen the flames a half a block away, pulled over. We went and woke up everybody," Chris Campbell said. "Kids, grandparents. That was in one house. I went to a second house and woke them up. The third house. Got them up." No one was hurt in the fire, but several people were displaced. The Red Cross is on the scene helping the displaced residents. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Kentucky firefighter recounts dramatic rescue of military veteran from dangling semi-truck VIDEO/PHOTOS: A firefighter in Kentucky is receiving a lot of deserved attention after his remarkable act of bravery. Bryce Carden was one of the heroes that saved a woman from a cab, attached to a tractor-trailer, that was dangling over a bridge and above the Ohio River. The Louisville firefighter went over the Clark Memorial Bridge to bring the driver to safety. Carden explained he wasn't nervous because his team had him on the top side. The driver was a military veteran. She was involved in a four-vehicle crash when her rig went through a guardrail on Friday. Louisville Fire Chief, Brian O'Neill, described the driver as "cool as a cucumber." "I spoke to some of her brothers and sisters with the Teamsters. They said that she is a military veteran and it obviously helped her keep her calm because she was amazing," said ONeill. THE NATIONAL DESK Related: New details released in crash that left semi-truck hanging off bridge, driver in need of rescue Program 'recycles' excess federal equipment to help volunteer firefighters in Nebraska VIDEO: Massive military transport vehicles are being refitted to fight wildfires and perform rescues during floods. Excess equipment the federal government no longer needs is now being put to use by volunteer fire departments to save lives and property. It's all possible because of a little-known, but heavily used program through the Nebraska Forest Service. "There are roughly 480 fire districts in the state of Nebraska. We have equipment in just about 350 fire districts," said Lew Sieber, the Nebraska Forest Service Shop manager. Sieber also looks over three programs that help get used federal equipment to local agencies. Twice a day, Sieber scavenges over a federal website for equipment. "They are done with it. It's excess to them. So, I requisitioned it, brought it in here," Sieber said. KETV ABC 7 OMAHA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
