Two people are dead following an overnight fire in Lindale. According to the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office, crews were called to the 400 block of N. College St., just after 10:15 p.m. Sunday, on reports of a structure fire. Officials identified the women who died as Ruby Martinez, 83, and her daughter, Gloria Clark, 67. Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Curtis Wulf ordered autopsies on both women. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office. KYTX-TV CBS/CW+ 19 NACOGDOCHES Firefighters have completely contained the Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County after a nearly three-week battle with what quickly became the largest wildfire in Texas history. That inferno and a series of other wildfires killed at least two people as it burned more than 1 million acres across several counties. Many Panhandle residents lost homes, farms and ranches. Thousands of livestock were killed. Relief efforts in the region are ongoing. The U.S. Small Business Administration has set up disaster loan outreach centers in Canadian and Borger for people affected. A Texas House committee is investigating the cause of the fires, as well as the response and effectiveness of disaster preparedness. The Saturday announcement that the Smokehouse Creek Fire is 100% contained means that crews have secured its entire perimeter and stopped it from spreading. TEXAS PUBLIC RADIO People from across Texas are helping a Sugar Land family after they lost nearly everything in a house fire. Kristin Goodman was at the Houston Rodeo when she believes lighting from Friday's storms hit their house. Goodman said many people have helped them in their recovery. The family is in awe of the support they received. "I was at the rodeo, went with my older daughter and a friend to see Jonas Brothers," said Goodman, who is head volleyball coach at Stephen F. Austin High School. She's also an integrated physics and chemistry teacher, a track and field coach, coaches club volleyball, and her oldest daughter is a competitive cheerleader. "I was coming home from work, riding my bike, I got caught in a hailstorm," said Rex Goodman, Kristin's husband. He said he got home and noticed the power wasn't working. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON An apartment fire in the Bay Area of Corpus Christi has landed one woman in the hospital. VIDEOS: The driver of the car who wrecked with a Tulsa firetruck on Feb. 26 is facing five counts of manslaughter and one count of driving under the influence, according to court documents. The wreck happened around 5:30 p.m. when 28-year-old Keiosha Rucker, driving a white Hyundai, pulled in front of a Tulsa fire truck that was responding with lights and sirens to a call. A neighbor in the area of 41st and Harvard caught the wreck on his security camera. Tulsa police said the impact of the wreck caused the car to spin off the road and crash into a telephone pole. Six people were in the car — a one-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, and three women aged 23, 26, and 28. The wreck claimed the lives of all three children and the 23-year-old woman. KJRH-TV NBC 2 TULSA VIDEO: The sound of bagpipes and snare drums could be heard up and down Denver's Market Street throughout St. Patrick's Day weekend. "We are raising money for what we do all year long," said Paulette Diaz, member of Colorado Emerald Society Pipes and Drums. "It's an honor because we're honoring our fallen firefighters and fallen police officers and fallen medics." Colorado Emerald Society Pipes and Drums marching band performed Sunday evening inside the Celtic on Market. It's not their typical scene. Normally, they play at funerals. Diaz was a Denver firefighter for nearly 27 years. She retired in January and continues to give back through music. KUSA-TV NBC/MYNETWORKTV 9 DENVER PHOTOS: The red paint of the 1923 Maxim fire engine glistened in the afternoon sunlight as it stood in front of the Northborough fire station. "It's more than just a truck. It's more than just steel on wheels," said Shay Bailey. Members of the Northborough Firefighters Association are celebrating the engine's 100th birthday. "There's a lot of pride in this truck," said Paul Fiske. Inside the hood ornament bears the name Maxim Motor Companies, which was headquartered in Middleborough, and from which the town purchased the engine in 1922. According to David Hunt, at that time, the Northborough Fire Department was all-volunteer. The engine, which cost $8,000, was custom made by Maxim. "We were a very big Maxim fire department, but this is the first and the best pump that they had at the time when they went to gasoline-powered equipment," said Hunt. COMMUNITY ADVOCATE |
