Multiple East Texas fire departments fight house fire in Malakoff subdivision PHOTOS: Firefighters from multiple East Texas fire departments battled a house fire in the Long Cove subdivision in Malakoff early Sunday morning. According to a post on the Payne Springs Fire Rescue Facebook page, firefighters with PSFR were asked to provide mutual aid for a structure fire in the Long Cove subdivision at about 1:54 a.m. Sunday. The Malakoff Volunteer Fire Department chief arrived on the scene first, and PSFR's chief and Engine 1 got there a short time later. They found that the fire had already been burning in the home's void and attic spaces for some time, the Facebook post stated. Firefighters used multiple fire hoses to put the fire out. "This fire was a challenge due to building construction, setback, and a lack of water supply," the Facebook post stated. "Multiple fire departments were requested due to these challenges." KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Heavy flames shoot from apartments in Harris County overnight; 16 homes destroyed or damaged VIDEO: About a dozen families were without a home Monday morning after an apartment building at the Colonies Landing Apartments went up in flames. The good news is there were no injuries reported. Cy-Fair fire crews had knocked out most of the fire by 5 a.m., but they were still monitoring for hotspots. But around 1:30 a.m. flames were shooting from the roof of the building, located at 15550 Kingfield Drive. Several dozen fire trucks were called in, including ladder trucks, to spray water on the building from above. One neighbor told KHOU 11 News he woke up to people screaming. He ran outside and started banging on doors to help get other residents out. Cy-Fair Fire Captain Daniel Arizpe said the Red Cross and apartment management are assisting to help relocate the people who have been displaced. In all, about 16 units were damaged or destroyed. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON 3 residents escape from burning building in downtown Lubbock VIDEO: Three residents were able to escape from a burning building in downtown Lubbock overnight. A passerby who was driving in the area called the fire in at 12:47 a.m. Sunday from 13th & Avenue F, a building that contained several different businesses and apartments. Crews reported flames coming from the roof at 12:50 a.m. and called in an extra team. Dede Phillips said when the fire started she grabbed her two roommates and got everybody outside. "I immediately jumped up and the whole room's filled up. I got my handicapped roommate and my other roommate out. By the time we got outside it had moved across the entire building," Dede said. They could hear what they said were bullets exploding inside, along with two empty propane tanks. Fortunately, they were all able to get out and no one was injured. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK Obituary: J.D. Stocks, Former Grandfalls Fire Chief J.D. had a heart the size of the state of Texas and spent his entire life serving his community. He joined the Grandfalls Volunteer Fire Department and ambulance service the same year he moved to Grandfalls and eventually became chief in 1980. A title he held until his passing. He loved the GVFD family as his own and the feeling was mutual. He also served as an instructor at Texas A&M Fire Academy for 42 years and there he made many lifelong friends. As education was his passion, he thoroughly enjoyed sharing his extensive knowledge and experiences with fellow firefighters. He served as Mayor of Grandfalls from 1980-1986 and was honored to be selected as Citizen of the Year during this time. He had a reputation for always dropping what he was doing to help a community member in need. OA ONLINE Related: Funeral held for Grandfalls Fire Chief and educator J.D. Stocks Fire breaks out at church in Pasadena VIDEO: A local church caught fire Saturday morning in the Pasadena area, according to the Pasadena Fire Marshal's Office. Pasadena firefighters responded to the Community of Christ church in the 1100 block of Pasadena Boulevard about 7:29 a.m. Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building's roof. Investigators said there were initial reports of a child inside the burning structure, but no one was found when firefighters made their way inside. They believe the building was vacant at the time. Firefighters did make it outside safely before the roof eventually collapsed due to the flames. No firefighters or civilians were injured, officials said. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. In the past, homeless people have broken into the church for shelter from the cold, according to reports from the scene. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Sullivan City and Peñitas concerned that Hidalgo County EMS sale could leave them without local ambulances Cities in western Hidalgo County, concerned they would be left without local ambulances when Hidalgo County EMS is sold, may acquire part of the company. Hidalgo County EMS — a privately owned ambulance company that responds to 911 calls in Peñitas, Sullivan City and rural parts of Hidalgo County — filed for bankruptcy in October 2019. The company, though, never filed a restructuring plan. More than 17 months later, Hidalgo County EMS is scrambling to find someone willing to buy the troubled company and maintain ambulance service in far-flung parts of South Texas. "From a business perspective, if you want to make money based on insured clients and speed of transportation, you're not going to find it in our communities," attorney Jose L. Caso, who represents the cities of Peñitas and Sullivan City, said Friday afternoon during a hearing in the bankruptcy case. PROGRESS TIMES PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Recalling the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and its ties to New York Every year, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Christ the King High School in Middle Village played host to a commemoration of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire in Manhattan — one of the worst tragedies to hit New York City in the 20th century. The longtime chairman of Christ the King's board of directors, former state Senator Serphin Maltese, along with his brothers Vincent and Andrew, organized the annual memorial service. The Maltese brothers lost three members in the tragic blaze — Caterina, their grandmother, and Rosaria and Lucia, two aunts. "We're hopeful that this is a rejuvenation of their memory. If we honor their memory, we'll ensure that nothing like that ever happens again," Serphin Maltese said during the 2011 ceremony that marked the centennial anniversary of the horrific blaze. The tragedy occurred on March 25, 1911, 110 years ago this month. QNS.COM Arizona city pilots firefighter cancer screening program The Peoria Fire-Medical Department, the Peoria City Council and Human Resources Director Christine Nickel are piloting a cancer screening program for line-of-duty firefighters. The program would allow all firefighters to receive an initial screening to determine their risk level. Based on the risk factors, the firefighters with the highest risk would be included into the program as a participant and the screenings would begin. The data from the screenings and treatments will be collected and reported to the council to ensure efficacy of the program. "For a long time, firefighters have always known that they are going to have a shorter lifespan than other professions," Mayor Cathy Carlat said. "If it doesn't have to be that way, then we certainly want to do everything that we can so that it isn't that way." Cancer is the leading cause of death for line-of-duty firefighters. The program is designed to take a preventative approach. "(The department) has been focused on mitigating the risks through early detection and treatment," Nickel said. PEORIA TIMES COVID-19 is increasing in Michigan; Why it may be a warning With the arrival of spring and after an exhausting year of COVID-19 restrictions, Americans are eager to return to some sense of normalcy. However, many health experts are urging patience, warning a possible fourth surge may be on the horizon, with over a dozen states exhibiting early signs of increasing case numbers. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, raised the alarm this week, expressing his concern that we may be reopening faster than we should. "There were times when we thought things were getting under control and then it exploded again," Fauci said. "So although we are going in the right direction, we've got to keep our foot on the pedal with regard to public health measures." Over the last week, more than a dozen states have seen increases in their daily case averages. Parts of the upper Midwest have been exhibiting particularly concerning trends, including in Michigan, where cases have been on the rise since late February. ABC COLUMBIA Florida fire department seeks help with wheelchair design for disabled, beach loving boy VIDEO: The Navarre Beach Fire Department is asking for help on a special project. The dept. wants to build a motorized scooter for a Navarre 11-year-old to help him move across the sand on the beach. Christian has Kabuki syndrome and going to the beach is one of his favorite things to do. He loves the beach so much, Fire Chief Danny Furiegh tells Channel 3 News his family relocated to the area so he could be closer. That's when Fureigh says he knew his department had to come up with some way to make his trips to and from the beach easier. "Some people love the beach but Christian truly to his soul loves the beach so I just felt there are enough tech-savvy people in our community that can make this happen for them," said Fureigh. "We really need help from the community for actually coming up with a way to build a cart that can either be hinged or pinned that can fold and go into a trunk. Fureigh says they have the wheels and the motor; they're now just looking for the right design. &n bsp; WEAR-TV ABC 3 NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
