Officials suspicious after unfinished building in San Antonio catches on fire VIDEO: Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire that destroyed an unfinished building Sunday morning. The San Antonio Fire Department responded to the fire a little before 10:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Potomac and North Pine. Firefighters did not stay inside the structure long due to the structural integrity of the building as there was no sheet rock to protect the walls. Investigators say the circumstances surrounding the fire are questionable and noted that several structures under construction have also caught on fire. The neighbors say it's been a recurring issue, according to officials. It was also noted that buildings that are under construction have a greater potential for a fire due unfinished walls which can contribute to a fire spreading rapidly. The structure is a total loss. No injuries were reported. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Two-Alarm Fire in Carrollton Under Control A two-alarm fire in Carrollton is now under control, Carrollton Fire Rescue said in a statement Sunday. The two-alarm fire began on the second-floor balcony of an apartment complex at 1120 Park Avenue. Six apartment buildings are severely damaged and 36 residents are being relocated with the assistance of apartment management. Addison and Coppell Fire Departments also assisted at the scene. No injuries to residents or firefighters have been reported. There is no known cause of the fire at this time. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Baytown firefighters spring into action to help control Das Goat Fire in Medina County VIDEO: A new fire raging in Medina County, which is just west of San Antonio, has prompted mandatory evacuations. State officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott, are heading to the area. On Sunday, Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 16 Texas counties, including Medina. Even local crews, such as the Baytown Fire Department, are jumping in to help. Members of Baytown FD are part of a team that has been fighting fires across the state for the last two weeks. In all, there are about 200 firefighters battling the fire. The firefighters are members of a 16-person team that's working tirelessly to help contain the fire. At last check, Das Goat Fire had burned more than 1,000 acres. It's forcing evacuations and threatening homes. "The reason why we're here is red flag conditions," Baytown FD's Alfred Duran said. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Range fires on Fort Hood spread off post, thousands of acres burned Fort Hood leaders said efforts to contain range fires Sunday were successful in mitigating a threat to homes in the town of Flat. Flat residents were asked to evacuate Sunday afternoon but the Texas A&M Forest Service said they could return a little before 9 p.m. The Crittenburg Complex Fire had burned more than 19,500 acres with 5% containment since Sunday, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Fort Hood Directorate of Emergency Services said the fire jumped East Range Road earlier in the day and fire crews aggressively responded to that threat. "Through the use of both air and ground assets from federal, state and local authorities the immediate threat to civilian homes and personnel in Flat, Texas, has been mitigated," Col. Chad Foster, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hood, said. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Bosque County Fire contained The "Bosque River Fire" is now under control as of this morning with crews staying on the scene. Bosque County Volunteer firefighters were able to contain the estimated 500 acres burning near the Bosque River just north of Highway 6 in an area in between Iredell and Walnut Springs, which was not threatened. The fire consumed 927 acres with firefighters and The Gap working in 2 divisions to contain it, according to the Bosque County Office Of Emergency Management. Firefighters battling the fire ignited "controlled burns" to destroy the brush fire's fuel. Commissioner Townley from Precinct 2 provided two motor graders. They were assisted by crews from several surrounding areas as well as the Texas Forestry Service. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Texarkana firefighters help fight Texas wildfires Volunteers from the Texarkana Texas Fire Department are home again after assisting with several wildfires burning across Texas. Chris Black and Owen Jones of Texarkana TIFMAS Strike Team 129 recently fought three fires across West Texas. Officials say they are glad to have them home safe and happy they were able to help with the efforts to control the wildfires. The Chico Ln. fire in Reagan County, west of San Angelo, has burned 8,000 acres. According to the Texas Wildfire Incident Response System, the fire was 100% contained by March 18. A Fire Weather Watch was issued in the area on March 26 at 2:05 p.m. and is in effect until March 27 at 9:00 p.m. 8,100 acres have been burned by the Crews Gap Fire in Runnels and Coleman Counties northeast of San Angelo. KGET-TV NBC/CW+ BAKERSFIELD Slow and steady: Fire museum in Florida creeps down street toward new home VIDEO: The arrival of the USS Orleck was not the only big move happening in the city on Saturday. The Jacksonville Fire Museum is setting up shop in its new (old) home along Bay Street. The museum rolled down Bay Street with the help of a large dolly, joining the Shipyards for a coming "Museum District," serving as a neighbor to the newly arrived USS Orleck and the coming Museum of Science and History. As part of the move, Bay Street will be closed from A. Philip Randolph Boulevard to Liberty Street from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday. The museum originally opened on the same part of Catherine Street near the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office headquarters in the late 1970s before moving to Kids Kampus in the early '90s. WJXT-TV NEWS 4 JACKSONVILLE Related: Moving crew transports Florida fire station museum inch by inch ‘One Rule for All': FDNY Unions Demand Mayor Lift Vaccine Mandate for All City Workers A day after New York City Mayor Eric Adams doubled down on his controversial decision to lift the city's vaccine mandate for professional athletes and performers, but not city workers, FDNY unions demanded a meeting to discuss the contradiction in policy. The heads of two firefighter unions delivered a request of the mayor Saturday to sit down within a week's time to discuss the city's vaccine mandate. Presidents of the Firefighters Association and FDNY-Fire Officers Association placed an "emergency" call hoping Adams would reconsider his new order and expand the mandate lift to all city employees. Currently, somewhere between 400 and 500 firefighters remain unvaccinated and are at risk of losing their jobs with the city, Firefighters Association President Andrew Ansbro estimated. Each week, anywhere from 5 to 10 firefighters receive an ultimatum to get a COVID-19 vaccine or step down, he said. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK Remember when, Arkansas? Jonesboro firefighters took up lawn mower racing in 2004 A historic event occurred March 27, 2004, at the Equine Center north of Arkansas State University at Jonesboro. Nine helmeted racers sporting gloves and foam neck braces roared at speeds topping 40 mph around a dusty, lumpy dirt track, on riding lawn mowers. It was the inaugural race of the Arkansas chapter of the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association. The Democrat-Gazette's Kenneth Heard wrote, "Pamplona, Spain, has the running of the bulls. Jonesboro has the running of the Toros and the Snappers and the Murrays and the Craftsmans." These riding lawn mowers had cutting decks but no blades. Jonesboro firefighter Brett Winstead said he spent $250 to put a larger carburetor and a steering wheel clutch on the Rally mower he named Sodbuster. "Last spring, this was mowing the grass," he said, adding, "I bought a push mower for the yard. You've got to make sacrifices." ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE - METERED SITE New Jersey fire company makes history after all female crew on shift A South Jersey fire company made history Saturday after every crew member on call for a shift was a woman. According to the volunteers at Union Fire Company, a branch of the Deptford Fire Department, having several females on call at once is normal. "It's for everybody. You don't need to be a male to do this field. Everyone's welcome," said Lt. Jennifer Smith, who has volunteered with the company since she was a teenager. There are 10 women in this one company, making up about a quarter of the staff. "It made it welcoming to be here because it was our family here, and it just grew from here that we're welcoming all the members that come in," she said. Several of the women became firefighters because it's what their dads did, and they wanted to be part of the family business. As they look ahead to the next generation, they hope that narrative flips and girls join because of their moms. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
