Emergency Technical Decon and Cool Clean Technologies Confirm Lithium Battery Fire Contaminants Cleaned from PPE
Author: Chief Mike Duyck (Ret.), President, Emergency Technical Decon
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) fires are hazardous to communities as well as firefighters’ health and safety. Unpredictable and dangerous to fight, LIB fires release toxins contaminating firefighter protective gear. In response to this alarming fact, Emergency Technical Decon (ETD), a state-of-the-art cleaning solution provider, and Cool Clean Technologies, a solution provider of liquid CO2 technology innovations, partnered on a preliminary study investigating the removal of LIB fire contaminants from firefighter protective clothing. ETD and Cool Clean Technologies’ test results had an average lithium removal rate of over 80%; a promising start to completely decontaminating firefighter gear.

VIDEO: A firefighter and three other people were injured after a vendor stall caught on fire at the Traders Village flea market on Sunday. The Cy-Fair Fire Department said the two-alarm fire at 7979 North Eldridge Parkway in Harris County only involved the stall. One person was taken to the hospital in stable condition while two others were treated at the scene. The firefighter was taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation and is in stable condition. The fire is under investigation by the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. The Jersey Village Fire Department and the Harris County Sheriff's Office assisted.

VIDEO: A fire station in Longview recently completed a major facelift. Station 5 is in the Greggton area of the city, and was constructed in the 1980s, according to Fire Marshal Kevin May. He said the department has outgrown the aging facility, and they decided it was time for an updated space for the firefighters. The upgrades include three new bays, a training tower, individual bunk rooms for the firefighters, and remodeled watch office and kitchen facilities. Station 5 houses the water rescue team, and the larger space will allow the station, which May said is already a training location, to get five new employees ready to serve in the field. May said the official ribbon cutting ceremony will be held during an open house at the station on Monday at 2 p.m., and he welcomed everyone to join.

Two people are displaced after a fire at an eastern Travis County home Sunday afternoon. Austin fire crews responded to a fire around 1 p.m. April 30 in the 7000 block of Timarou Terrace. AFD says there was fire damage to the garage and heavy smoke throughout. Multiple dogs and a cat were removed from the structure. AFD says the dogs were fine, but the cat died despite resuscitation efforts. The cause of the fire has been identified as an electrical malfunction.

The Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department highlighted both an ongoing memorial and a moment of irony from the weekend on its social media. According to the fire department, an ongoing funeral tradition for fallen firefighters reflects the tradition of communities summoning firefighters for help by ringing the station bell five times, three times. This is echoed during the funerals of firefighters killed in the line of duty, such as former Dalhart Fire Chief Curtis Brown and Firefighter Brendan Torres, who were killed in an early October 2022 accident on US 54. On the same day that the Dalhart department began what will be a week-long memorial for their fallen comrades, during which they will keep red lights on near the station entrance until next Monday morning, officials said they "ironically" experienced another "5-5-5" call.

A driver in Rockcastle County is unharmed after a scary moment caught on video. The Mount Vernon Fire Department said their chief, David Bales, was on his way to the fire station Friday morning when he was met by a truck on fire. The driver was headed north on Highway 25 approaching Mount Vernon when the chief noticed the fire coming from the hood and engine compartment area of the truck. An official with the department told WHAS11 News that fire crews hadn't been notified at the time and the chief was able to turn around and located the vehicle while calling for an engine to respond. They said the driver was making every attempt to stop the vehicle, but the fire had disabled everything besides the steering. The man was finally able to stop in the yard of a home on West Main Street, three miles from the location where the chief initially noticed the truck on fire.

VIDEO: Tiara Grant said that since he was a little boy, her 11-year-old son Darrien has always dreamed of becoming a firefighter. Tiara said she has been taking Darrien to visit fire stations since he was three years old. "It just never stopped. It was always ‘I want to be a firefighter for Halloween,' or he would watch shows about being a firefighter," said Tiara. Darrien said the reason he wants to become a firefighter is to keep people safe. "I would like to help people," said Darrien. A few days ago, Tiara came up with the idea of setting up a firefighter training drill for Darrien. "He just has so much energy, and I know that he really wants to be a firefighter because he puts on the outfit all the time. So, I was like, you know, what, let me put something together, so he can actually feel like he's a firefighter," said Tiara.

VIDEO: May 2013 is a month many Oklahomans will not soon forget. The May 20th Moore tornado and the May 31st El Reno tornado combined caused dozens of deaths, hundreds of injuries and billions of dollars in damage. As the 10-year anniversary approaches, KFOR is bringing you a special series of reports as we remember those lost on May 20 and May 31, 2013, as well as reflect on what we've learned in the decade since. No other fire department knows the devastation of May's Fury quite like the Moore Fire Department. KFOR's Emily Sutton recently checked back in with a Moore firefighter who opened up to News 4 for the first time five years ago about pulling children out of the rubble at Plaza Towers Elementary. It's been 10 years since Battalion Chief Corley Moore dug through the rubble pile of Plaza Towers Elementary.

VIDEO: Flames and smoke took over the basement of a house in Washington County on April 24, but from the outside, you'd never know. A special fire suppression tool saved the home. "I got visible flames in the basement," a first responder said. "Looks like it's filled with smoke." On the morning of April 24, the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to a house fire in Addison. Deputies saw fire coming from the dryer vent area. That's when they grabbed their fire suppression tool, also called an FST. "To get in there and reset the clock, buy some time for when the fire department gets there," said Mark Mock, Fire Suppression Solutions president. Deputies knocked down the door and then tossed in the FST. Sheriff's officials said the home suffered heat, smoke and water damage, but it was still intact after the fire. First responders believe the FST played a role in saving it.
