Fire Spreads in 2-Story Dallas Apartment Building; No Injuries VIDEO: A fire that destroyed an Oak Lawn apartment building Sunday night and forced nearly a dozen people from their homes was possibly caused by a burning futon, firefighters say. According to a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman, crews were first called about 10:44 p.m. Sunday to a fire at an apartment complex located along the 4000 block of Hawthorne Avenue. Flames were coming from the 2-story building when the first crews arrived. Firefighters immediately began banging on the doors of apartment homes while other crews prepared to battle the fire. At one point the flames intensified to the point where crews had to pull away from the building and call for backup. It took between 60-70 firefighters more than two hours to extinguish the fire. No one was hurt. A total of 10 apartment homes in the building were impacted by smoke, fire or water damage. At least 11 people were displaced, DFR said. The sound of bagpipes is certainly a unique and some say emotional type of music. Several years ago members of the Amarillo Fire Department decided to establish a group to carry on some musical traditions of the past and to begin some of their own. "The pipes and drums are a long standing tradition in the fire service with the original immigrants coming over in New York City on the east coast were from Ireland, Scotland, England those places, so it's a long tradition long held on the east coast and about eight years ago we had some guys that got together and decided we want to make that our tradition to our priority is playing for retiree funerals line of duty death funerals that includes local and also on a state live or statewide or area level," said Adam Wilcox. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Firefighters Rescue Two People, Dog From Flooded Creek in Dallas Dallas Fire-Rescue and the Dallas Police Department rescued two people and a dog after they were stranded in floodwaters on Sunday night. According to officials, firefighters and police officers responded to North Walton Walker Boulevard at the U-turn, just south of Northwest Highway, at around 12:20 a.m. There is a homeless camp in the area, which led to concern for the people living near the fast-rising creek. The water rose quickly as more rain fell overnight Sunday into Monday. Officials said that firefighters found people in the water along the high-rise portion of the highway. Waters were so high at the U-turn that the road had become impassable, officials said. Firefighters from the Swift Water Rescue team went in by boat and pulled a man, woman and their dog out of the rising waters shortly before 2 a.m. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Humble City Council votes to negotiate contract with architect to design Humble Fire Station No. 2 replacement The city of Humble will soon hire an architectural firm to engineer and design the replacement for Humble Fire Station No. 2. Humble City Council unanimously approved the city negotiating a contract with Martinez Architects for the project at the May 13 City Council meeting. The current second station is located at 501 Wilson Road and its replacement will be built at 1401 S. Houston Ave.—the land the Humble Senior Activity Center occupies. The 43-year-old senior activity center reportedly has asbestos and is set to be demolished this year, according to city officials. Humble Fire Chief David Langenberg said via email the current station on Wilson Road poses several challenges for the department. It was originally built in 1974 less than a mile from the first station to be used as a storage garage for fire engines, but it was adapted into a station to offer quicker emergency assistance on both sides of the Union Pacific Corp. railroad tracks, he said. "And at that point we were preparing for an imminent delivery." Weighing at 4 lbs and 14 ounces, Paisley Jay Bull was delivered nearly six weeks early in the elevators of University Medical Center. Fiery train derailment prompts evacuation of small Iowa town VIDEO/PHOTOS: Thick black smoke billowed into the air Sunday after a train derailed in northwest Iowa, prompting authorities to evacuate part of a small, nearby town. The fiery derailment happened early Sunday afternoon on the southwest edge of Sibley, which is a town of about 3,000 people roughly 200 miles (321.87 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines. Photos and video of the derailment posted online Sunday show about 30 train cars piled up along the tracks with flames and a large plume of smoke coming from one end of the pile of cars. Local media reports say authorities evacuated an area within 5 miles (8.05 kilometers) of the derailment. Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls told KIWA radio the train was hauling fertilizer and ammonium nitrate. Nate Minten of Sibley told the Des Moines Register that smoke was still visible around 4:30 p.m. Sunday from his mother's home. Lightfoot announced Nance-Holt's nomination at a graduation ceremony for the latest class of Chicago Fire Department paramedics on Friday. "Pending City Council approval, Annette will be the first-ever female fire commissioner, putting yet another crack in that glass ceiling," Lightfoot said. "I know a thing or two about firsts, so madame commissioner, welcome to the club." Nance-Holt urged the class of 42 new paramedics to treat the patients they serve as members of their own families. "Always remember that you will be answering the call for someone on their worst day, and they will remember how you made them feel. You have an opportunity to leave a lasting impression about the Chicago Fire Department and the services that we provide to our citizens." WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Ohio city sets new social media policy for police and firefighters A "rift." That is how Carter Stewart and Ohio State University described the relationship between Columbus city leaders and the police department. The city has a new social media policy for police officers and firefighters. It says, while social media can be fun, employees could be disciplined, even fired, for saying anything negative about the city and its operations. Many businesses have implemented social media policies for sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Columbus Public Safety put out a new social media policy after an investigation was launched into a Columbus police deputy chief's use of Twitter. "It is clear to me while the City of Columbus can regulate social media of employees, they have gone way too far with this policy. In many instances, it violates the first amendment," said attorney Mark Weaver.
