Several families displaced after fire tears through apartment complex on Houston's west side VIDEO: Several families have been displaced after a fire tore through an apartment complex late Saturday night. The fire broke out at The Hudson Apartment Homes at 3131 Hayes Road just before 11 p.m. Witnesses said they saw someone cooking on the balcony porch where the fire may have started. Arson investigators are looking into the reports and are trying to determine the origin of the fire. "A majority of the damage was on the balcony. You can see that the fire started getting progressively worse. Once it got into the attic and then the roof then we tried to knock it down from there," said Houston Fire Department District Fire Chief Isaac Garcia. Uriel Pillado and his girlfriend were eating when a stranger knocked on their door and told them to get out because their building was on fire. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Laredo Fire Chief Steve Landin announces sudden retirement Laredo Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Landin is retiring effective 5 p.m. Friday after 12 years at the head of the department. Landin said he was planning on retiring any time after his 30th anniversary with the city, which was on April 2. However due to the pandemic, he held off until the emergency had "stabilized," according to a letter he sent City Manager Robert Eads late Thursday. "An incident commander never leaves during an incident. He waits until that incident stabilizes, then he passes command control onto someone else. That's emergency management 101," he said. The fire chief said he and his wife had considered giving a week's notice of his departure, but decided that it would be better to leave quietly and avoid a week of pomp and circumstance. LAREDO MORNING TIMES Lightning strike causes condo fire on South Padre Island VIDEO: An early-morning fire caused severe damage on South Padre Island on Saturday, and the worst of it was captured by cell phone video. The Laguna Vista Volunteer Fire Department's photo shows the scope of the fire. The Rio Grande Valley Firefighters and Fire Marshal's Association posted video of the fire. South Padre Island is about 2 1/2 hours south of Corpus Christi, near the U.S.-Mexico border. It erupted at the Gulf Point Condominiums around 6:30 a.m. A National Weather Service radar indicates a lightning strike was the cause. No injuries were reported. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Concerns raised over governor's plan to use Dallas firefighters for COVID-19 testing at nursing homes The governor's office announced plans for local fire departments to expand COVID-19 testing in nursing homes. But the Dallas Fire Association president says the announcement raises a lot of questions, including the question of if this is putting first responders at risk unnecessarily. It is part of the job for first responders to be there for COVID-19 patients who need to go to the hospital. However, Dallas Fire Association President Jim McDade says using firefighters to provide COVID-19 tests seems like a poor use of valuable resources, especially when it seems like medical staff already on site at nursing homes could administer the tests themselves. Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday directed all staff and residents at licensed Texas nursing homes be tested for COVID-19. On Friday, he announced that would be accomplished, in part, with the help of fire departments. KDFW FOX 4 DALLAS 2019 tornado: Abilene's first responders remember the chaos and community response May 18, 2019. Early morning. Abilene Police Department patrol officer Randy Farmer walks toward a briefing room when a call comes over his radio regarding wind-related damage at a house near Ambler Avenue. Farmer and company hop in their vehicles and head to the site. They never made it to their start-of-shift briefing. "The call came out that somebody's roof had blown off," Farmer said, working off memory nearly a year after the tornado ripped apart homes, trees, vehicles and other property, mostly in south Abilene. But north Abilene took a hit, too. "Another officer ran into a bunch of debris on South First Street," Farmer said. "It was so dark because the power was out. There were large pieces of debris, like restaurant signs that came off storefronts. It was dangerous." Farmer and his fellow day shift patrol officers were first on scene, at least in an official capacity, early that Saturday morning. ABILENE REPORTER-NEWS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

12 Firefighters Hurt After Explosion, Fire In Downtown Los Angeles VIDEO: Twelve firefighters were injured in a fire and explosion in the Toy District of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday evening. As of Sunday afternoon, three have been discharged and eight remain hospitalized. The incident began with a fire that was first reported around 6:26 p.m. on Saturday. As firefighters were responding to the blaze inside the building at 327 East Boyd Street, the site of a butane honey oil supplier called Smoke Tokes, there was a "significant explosion," said LAFD Captain Erik Scott. "After the explosion, the fire absolutely intensified and it shot out 30 feet like a blowtorch right in the path of egress," Scott said. The injured firefighters were transported to County USC Medical Center to be treated for burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Two firefighters were initially put on ventilators and four were sent to the intensive care unit for burns. At last check, there were no remaining firefighters on ventilators. All are expected to survive. KCAL-TV CBS 9 LOS ANGELES Related: Drone Video Shows Firefighters Escaping Fireball at DTLA Explosion Related: Criminal probe launched into downtown Los Angeles building explosion amid questions about stored oils Police and fire investigators launched a criminal probe Sunday into the cause of an explosion at a hash oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles that sent firefighters running for their lives. Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's major crimes division were working with the city Fire Department's arson investigators to determine what might have sparked the blast that shot a ball of flames out of the building Saturday night and scorched a fire truck across the street, police spokesman Josh Rubenstein said. "We're in the very early stages of the investigation … to understand what happened and figure out how to move forward," he said. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was assisting local fire investigators, an agency spokeswoman said. The blast injured a dozen firefighters. Some of them who ran out onto sidewalks, where they tore off their burning protective equipment, including melted helmets, officials said. KTLA-TV 5 CW LOS ANGELES EMS Week 2020: Here's how much emergency medical technicians make in every state Sunday is the beginning of National EMS Week when the U.S. recognizes those who serve in emergency medical services. According to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), National EMS Week was started in 1974 by then-President Gerald Ford. This year in particular, the week is a good opportunity to honor the service that EMTs and paramedics provide to society in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, "one of the most daunting and demanding challenges our country has ever faced," a proclamation signed by President Trump on Friday said. "This week, we recognize these heroic men and women for their efforts to deliver life-saving care and compassion to their fellow Americans, and we acknowledge that our country is a safer and healthier place because of their work," the proclamation said. However, EMTs don't all get paid the same. FOX BUSINESS Virginia 911 center leverages remote capabilities, FirstNet to help address COVID-19 challenges A Virginia 911 center is combining remote solutions with FirstNet connectivity as part of a multi-pronged strategy to ensure operational continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic today and to evaluate new technological options for the center in the future. Doug Campbell, deputy director of the Department of Emergency & Customer Communications (DECC) for the city of Alexandria, Va., said such technology capabilities potentially are transformative for the 911 community. "After 30-plus years of doing this, who would have thought we would be doing it [answering 911 calls] at home?" Campbell said during an interview with IWCE's Urgent Communications. "But that's what we're looking at. You kind of have to massage it to fit your needs, but those are pretty cool [solutions], as technology has evolved. I would have never thought that we would be answering calls from home, especially emergency calls. IWCE'S URGENT COMMUNICATIONS Cancer research center study in Seattle targets front-line workers most at risk from the coronavirus Early in the novel coronavirus pandemic, Nick Fugate figured he would probably get infected sooner or later. As a paramedic with King County Medic One, he and his colleagues were transporting gravely ill patients every day, amid an atmosphere of uncertainty and urgency. Even now that hospitalizations have declined, Fugate puts his odds at 50-50. "We are still seeing COVID patients pretty regularly, particularly in the nursing home facilities and our other vulnerable populations," he said. So Fugate, who lives in Edmonds, was eager to sign up for an unusual research project that aims to monitor front-line workers for six months to better understand the risks they face and follow the progression of the disease in those who do get sick. Among the goals is figuring out why some people develop symptoms and others do not, and whether people can be infected again after recovering from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new virus.
