Hughes Springs firefighter survives tornado hit on fire station unscathed PHOTO: It could take well into this week to clear all the downed trees and debris in one East Texas city, slammed by tornadoes this past Friday night. Longtime residents say nothing like this had ever happened in the small community of Hughes Springs, and they are still trying to process the scope of what hit them. Firefighters gathered at Hughes Springs volunteer fire department to salvage what records and equipment they could from the mangled I-beams and collapsed rooms of their wrecked building. "It carries a lot of emotions with it too. This was our home for 40 years or so. Of course, it's sad to see it like this," said longtime volunteer firefighter John Burson. Unknown to us at the time of the storm, there was a firefighter at the back part of the fire department building when the tornado hit. Randy Jones arrived at the station Friday night, preparing chainsaws and emergency equipment expecting to help in damage areas, not knowing what was coming next. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Related with Video: Hughes Springs volunteer firefighter takes cover under Jeep during tornado Amarillo Fire Department fully staffed for the first time in 4 years, plans to add 14th fire station The Amarillo Fire Department is seeing stress relief after hiring 19 firefighters from their first year academy, saying it was a success. "It feels really good to be back to full staff for the first time since 2019. Our firefighters have been working a lot. Picking up overtime shifts, call back shifts, and filling in for each other, so this is a very good moment," said Jeff Justus, PIO for AFD. AFD says with the added 19 firefighters, stress will be reduced on many especially going into fire season this winter. "They worked 24 hour shifts already so to have to come in and work a 48 hour or even at times 72 hour shift can be very stressful on someone, especially during the winter months when we have all these fires going on. Last winter we average six fires a day. That means potentially fighting 30 fires in a few days time and that's a lot of stress for somebody to endure," said Justus. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Railroad worker dies after explosion in Spring, authorities say A railroad worker died at the hospital after an explosion caused by fuel at a railroad track near Old Town Spring Saturday morning, authorities said. According to officials with Harris County Fire Marshal's Office and Spring Fire Department, it happened in the 26500 block of Hardy Street at around 9 a.m. Officials with Harris County Fire Marshall's Office said two railroad workers were doing welding work on the rail line when some sort of fuel gas was ignited, causing an explosion. One of the workers was rushed to an area hospital where he later died. The other worker did not suffer any injuries. Officials with HCFMO, Spring Fire, and Union Pacific said the investigation is ongoing at this time. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON La Marque Fire Marshal's office investigating 2 suspected arson-related cases 1 block apart The La Marque Fire Marshal is looking into two suspected arson-related cases that occurred at two houses a block away from each other early Sunday morning. It happened at about 2:40 a.m. A family in their home located in the 2900 block of Magnolia smelled the odor of gasoline and called 911, according to Fire Marshal Brennan Briggs. As La Marque police were en route to the Magnolia scene, they noticed another home in the 2800 block of South Houston Drive, one block over, engulfed in flames. The La Marque Fire Department responded to the South Houston Dr. and called for assistance from the Texas City and Hitchcock fire departments to get control of the fire. According to Briggs, the house on South Houston Dr. was undergoing renovation work, but initial evidence revealed that accelerants believed to be gasoline were used to start that fire. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON North Texas Firefighters Get Electric Vehicle First Responder Training This week, firefighters and first responders from around North Texas will gather in Garland for training on dealing with electric vehicles in emergency situations. More than 50 first responder organizations will get hands on training from General Motors. As the vehicles grow in popularity, firefighters say the need for this special training grows as well. "Anytime we have a vehicle accident, usually when we take our jaws [of life] and extricate the car from around the victim, now we actually have to worry about where we cut the car so that we don't injure our first responders or the victims that are in the car," Garland Fire Department representative James Dugger said. While they have had training sessions in the past, Dugger said this is their first intensive training in real life emergency simulation. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Two-alarm structure fire leads to roof collapse in northwest Dallas, official says VIDEO: In a little over three hours, the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department (DFR) has put out a two-alarm fire at a one-story building in northwest Dallas. A DFR official said units got a 911 call at around 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, about a structure fire on Wireway Drive. According to the official, the building houses multiple businesses, but none of them were open at the time. One of the owners came to check on his shop when he saw the fire and called 911. Firefighters and nearby residents noticed thick black smoke coming from the building. One resident shared videos of the fire with WFAA on social media. Officials raised it to a two-alarm fire due to the size of the fire and of the building itself. The DFR said the fire grew so large before they got there that they had to put it out from outside of the building. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: 1 killed in Hawaii building fire One person was killed in an early morning building fire in the McCully area Sunday morning, according to HFD. Crews responded to a two-story walk-up just after 5 a.m. located along Date Street. Nearly 40 HFD personnel from 10 units arrived to find the structure with heavy flames on the first floor reaching to the second. Once they established their water supply and started fighting the flames, HFD had the fire under control in about 40 minutes. It was fully extinguished just before 7 a.m. Neighbors said they were woken up by the sound of an explosion. "We thought one of our kids broke a window, kicked it with their feet or something," said Lehi Fanene of Honolulu. "So we ran out before we knew it, we were dealing with a fire." Fanene was worried the fire would spread to his home and the other properties. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Related with Video: Hughes Springs volunteer firefighter takes cover under Jeep during tornado FDNY's ‘last resort' rope rescue saves victim during Manhattan fire that injured 38 people VIDEO: On Saturday, as a fire tore through a Manhattan building, FDNY firefighters made a daring life-saving, last-resort rope rescue. About 24 hours after saving numerous victims impacted by the blaze at 429 East 52nd St., the city Fire Department, via Facebook, explained how their "herculean team effort" proved successful. First, the FDNY said a heavy fire blocked the front door, which was the only way out for folks enduring the horror of the fire that left 38 people injured -- two critically, five seriously -- after a lithium battery connected to a micro mobility device sparked the blaze inside a 20th floor apartment. In total, four firefighters were put on a life-saving rope to rescue a trapped victim. "We train on that; we train on all of our procedures often," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb, as shared by the department on social media. In total, one fire truck, one ambulance and an alternative response vehicle were destroyed when Hurricane Ian's storm surge busted into a firehouse that is now condemned. The emergency vehicles were being stowed away at Station #31, at the corner of Estero Boulevard and Donora Boulevard. Fort Myers Beach Fire Chief Ron Martin told NBC2 that there was at least five feet of water inside the vehicle bays, rendering the life-saving vehicles useless. "We are the stewards of preparedness," said Chief Martin. "You cannot prepare for an event like Ian." The emergency vehicles weren't forgotten about or left behind. It's the plan to leave more than $1 million worth of gear on the island during a hurricane. WZVN-TV ABC 7 NAPLES EMS in Louisiana uses unique lifesaving technique for 100th time VIDEO: The New Orleans EMS administered blood to a woman shot on Bourbon Street Sunday morning while she was still in the street. They say this is a rare ability for EMS services across the country and saves lives. Thomas Mauro was the paramedic who gave her the blood using a Lifeflow device. He was able to get blood into the victim in just 10 minutes as opposed to the normal 40 or so minutes it can take to get victims' blood in a hospital. "Quick, rapid blood administration is the most important thing you can do besides getting them to the hospital as quickly as possible. I feel better now that I can make more of a difference than I could before," Mauro said. This was the 100th time New Orleans EMS was able to use this service since it launched almost exactly a year ago. WDSU-TV NBC 6 NEW ORLEANS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
