VIDEO: Popular Galveston hotel badly damaged by fire; one firefighter injured Galveston firefighters had their hands full Friday night with a large fire at a hotel near the Schlitterbahn Water Park. The fire caused extensive damage at the Inn at the Waterpark hotel on Jones Road. We're told Galveston firefighters fought the fire with help from four other fire departments. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor injury, according to officials. Crews took about 90 minutes to get the flames under control. Officials didn't say how many of the 151 rooms were damaged, but part of the roof was burned off and the second floor of the hotel had heavy fire damage. Officials said the fire started in the attic and quickly spread from there. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Fort Worth Fire Department recruits most diverse class in 129-year history With bravery, strength and commitment to their community, 24 Fort Worth Fire Department recruits walked out to a crowd of proud family and friends and left as new firefighters They just made history as the most diverse class of firefighters in Fort Worth Fire Department's 129-year history; 71% of the class are minorities. Five are military veterans and five women also graduated. All five women are mothers. "It's been hard, it's been hard but it's been worth it," said Tamesha Wharton, one of the department's newest firefighters. Wharton sacrificed a lot to accomplish this goal. Her daughter lived in Memphis while she completed her training in Fort Worth. "To be honest, it means everything to me," said Wharton. "I think it just shows her that we can do anything we put our mind to." As Fort Worth becomes more diverse, Chief Jim Davis has focused on making sure the department reflects the diversity of the community they serve. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Intense apartment fire affects multiple units in north Harris County, officials say VIDEO/PHOTO: More than a dozen families will spend Thanksgiving week trying to rebuild their lives after an overnight apartment fire in north Harris County. Firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire at the Rock Creek at Hollow Tree Apartments near Cypress Station at about 11:45 p.m. on Friday. Officials said it took firefighters about an hour and a half to put out the blaze. Video shows the flames ripping across the roof of the building. The Spring Fire Department said about 16 units were damaged in the fire. One person appeared to be injured after an ABC13 crew saw them being placed on a stretcher. Their condition is unknown. The Red Cross is assisting the families who were impacted. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating how and where the fire started. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Fatal house fire in Corpus Christi, crews find one dead Fire crews were called out to a house fire covered in flames and heavy smoke around 9:30 a.m. on Callicoatte Rd. Unfortunately, one person was found dead in the fire. Corpus Christi Fire Chief, Robert Rocha spoke with 3NEWS and said that two people were able to get out of the home on their own, however they told fire officials that they weren't alone and there was a woman still in the house. "Once we found the victim. We did engage fire investigators to come out to the scene as well as the coroner's office and CCPD to assist with the investigation." Chief Rocha shared. As for what caused the fire, Chief Rocha told 3NEWS that investigators are still working on that. He explains, "We have a good idea of what the cause is, however, it is still under investigation. And at this time, we're not ready to release that. Once we are certain that the investigation is complete, we will release that information." KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI El Paso fire, Union Pacific team up for chemical leak simulation training The El Paso Fire Department attended a training Friday hosted by Union Pacific to simulate a chemical leak should one occur. The simulation included a chemical called Viynal chloride that would be leaking from the training tank with the hazmat crew needing to find its cause. While this kind of situation does not happen very often, fire suppression technician Marco Alvarado with El Paso Fire believes that this training will prepare for the unlikely event. "We like to train for worst case scenarios so by Union Pacific giving us this great training opportunity to bring their training tank car we can actually practice these types of worst case scenarios." This simulation training is similar to an ammonia leak that occurred on Nov. 7 that forced a shelter in place in the nearby area. With this training they'll be able to work quicker to remedy a future chemical emergency. THE REPUBLICAN - MASSLIVE Florida firefighter becomes first to earn U.S. citizenship while in training Training to be a firefighter is difficult, so imagine doing that and studying to become an American citizen at the same time. A new firefighter with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue did exactly that – fulfilling some of his lifelong dreams. HCFR says firefighter Anthony Torres grew up in Havana, Cuba. He dreamed of being a firefighter when he was a kid but was discouraged from pursuing that career because firefighters in Cuba don't have access to many resources. When Torres was a teenager, HCFR says his grandfather sponsored him and his mother to move to the U.S. Torres moved here when he was 15, attending high school in Tampa and sparking that passion for fire service. Just a few weeks ago, Torres completed quite the feat: earning his U.S. citizenship all while finishing his training to be a Hillsborough County firefighter. He's the first to do so in the county.
