Multiple departments responded around 9 p.m. to Washington Street on the Stonington side of Mystic for the massive fire at the Seaport Marine Warehouse. "It's an older building that's been around as long as I've been here which is 26 years," said Bruce Flax, president, Mystic Chamber of Commerce. The Salvation Army New London Canteen said it responded as well. The fire started at around 8:45 p.m. and quickly grew. Crews had to use water from the Mystic River to help extinguish the flames, which were visible for hours. "It's sad, it's always sad when something like this happens," Flax said. "It looks like nobody was hurt which is good." The Whalers Inn, a boutique hotel, was evacuated because of the amount of smoke in the air. According to reports, 37% of firemen and women have battled post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and firefighters are three times more likely to die on the job than those in other careers. Tragically, one firefighter loses his or her life to suicide every two days. The statewide peer support program will be a valuable keystone in aiding fire personnel in need according to International Association of Fire Fighters General President Edward Kelly. "Adding behavioral health and peer support counseling training into the recruit curriculum is groundbreaking work," he said. In less than 15 minutes, 492 people were dead and another 166 injured, making the blaze the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. While no one knows exactly how the fire started 80 years ago on Nov. 28, 1942, its influence on fire and safety codes and on the medical treatment of burn victims still resonates. The fire started at about 10:15 p.m. as revelers packed the club near the city's South End on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, hoping to forget about the early days of World War II for a few hours. The first flames broke out in a basement portion of the club, known as the Melody Lounge. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
