VIDEO: Dramatic footage shows firefighters extinguishing large greenhouse fire in Minnesota Firefighters from multiple departments worked overnight to knock down a massive fire at a well-known greenhouse in Maple Grove. Fire crews were called out around 3:30 a.m. for the blaze at Lynde's Greenhouse and Nursery off 93rd Avenue North, east of Elm Creek Boulevard. As they arrived, firefighters saw large flames and a large pillar of smoke billowing out of the greenhouse, according to the department's Twitter feed. Video from the scene shows firefighters attacking the flames from multiple angles, with hoses pouring water in from the side and above. The size of the fire was so large that firefighters say they had to call in a second alarm to bring more crews on scene and a life safety unit from Golden Valley, which helps monitor the health of firefighters. He says the department has a saying: "The more risk, the more you save." He said he was a part of so many rescues, he really didn't have a specific count – but at least 10 to 15. "I knew they were just kind of racking up," said Oberholzer. "They were almost on a waiting list. We finished one, we dropped them off, turned around, and went off." The calls picked up during the Thursday high tide as water pushed up driveways and into homes. "They were all kind of the same," said Oberholzer. In 1965, the company's original fire station on Newtown Street Road was knocked down and from that wreckage firefighters retrieved a time capsule that was placed there in 1916. That box was placed into a new box, new items were added and everything put into the cornerstone of the new building in 1967. Firefighter Preston Tyrrell, who organized the opening of the capsule, said when he asked old-timers about the time capsule's name, Gilroy Roberts, it always came up as having contributed an important item to the capsule. DAILY TIMES - METERED SITE Tennessee fire chief calls for stricter penalties for drivers who ignore ‘Move Over Law' The Memphis Fire Department chief is calling for action after two firefighters were struck and injured by a driver Sunday morning on I-240 & Kerr Avenue. Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat said she wants harsher penalties to be handed down for motorists who cause these accidents. "Firetrucks are big and red, and they have a lot of lights. "It's ridiculous that our first responders can't do their job because they are in fear for their life," said Sweat. Ambulances are big and red, they're that way for a reason," said Sweat. "So, there's almost no excuse for what's going on." The "Move Over Law," is the state law Sweat is urging Memphis drivers to respect when they see police lights or emergency crews responding to a scene. WMC-TV NBC 5 MEMPHIS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
