Houston apartment building possibly torched, causing roof to collapse, damaging 12 units, firefighters say VIDEO: A firefighter and resident were injured after an apartment building in west Houston was possibly torched, according to investigators. The Houston Fire Department said at about 5:30 p.m., crews responded to heavy fire and smoke at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Lazy Hollow Drive. The fire reportedly started in the building's common utility room and led to 12 units being damaged due to the flames, according to HFD. Investigators said the fire burned through the roof, causing it to collapse, and damaged an electrical unit that cut the power out at two complexes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for back injuries along with a resident, who had some discomfort, HFD said. The fire was tamed at 5:41 p.m., according to authorities. The gesture is part of a weekend of observances organized by the National Firefighters Memorial Service that concluded Sunday. The 41st annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend has been a time for sharing, healing, and commemorating each firefighter's commitment to public duty, organizers said. "This national tribute honors the 148 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2021 and several who died in previous years," the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation said. "Each firefighter's name will be inscribed on a bronze plaque and become a permanent part of the National Memorial in honor of their sacrifices." KVEO-TV NBC/CBS 23 BROWNSVILLE Dallas Police and Fire Rescue announces new location technology meant to help reach exact locations of emergencies more quickly The Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire Rescue have announced they will begin using the London-based location technology program what3words to respond to incidents and callers faster, according to a news release. what3words divides local areas into smaller dimensions to allow call handlers to pinpoint distressed callers to an exact 10-foot square location. "As a public service agency, we are always looking for better ways to enhance our service delivery to the people we serve," Dominique Artis, chief of Dallas Fire Rescue, said in the release. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Suspected arson fire causes $40K in damage to home; 1 person in custody, San Antonio Fire Department says San Antonio fire officials say they are investigating a fire on the city's South Side as arson, and that one person has already been taken into police custody. Firefighters responded to a fire around 11:45 a.m. Friday in the 1200 block of Brighton Avenue, not far from Division Avenue and Pleasanton Road after receiving a call from neighbors about a one-story home with flames. Mark Trevino, a battalion chief with the San Antonio Fire Department, said they believe that a previous female tenant set fire to the home after being evicted. When firefighters arrived, San Antonio police already had a woman in custody. "The fire was initiated in multiple spots, so it does look like it was intentionally set. The bulk of the fire was on a back patio, and there was a bunch of different spots, which tends happen in intentionally set fires," Trevino said. THE CITY LIFE ORG 24 Boston police officers becoming city firefighters this year in large uptick Two dozen Boston Police officers are shedding the blue for the red this year, switching over to Boston Fire in an unusually large swing among the city's first responders. Data provided by the city shows that 24 Boston police officers have transferred to the fire department in 2022, enrolling in the academy to become firefighters. That's compared with four, zero, six and one over the previous four years. On the flip side, only one Boston firefighter became a city police lofficer this year — and that was the first time since at least before 2018 that that had happened at all. Boston Police Patrolmen's Association President Larry Calderone said the department is "losing officers to the fire department at an alarming rate because, at the end of the day, it's a great job." "Great wages. Great working conditions. No forced overtime. A great quality of life and, arguably, greater respect," Calderone said in a statement to the Boston Herald. THE DAY - METERED SITE Florida: Meet the Retired Firefighter Behind Miami's Iconic ‘Fireman Derek's Bake Shop' Derek Kaplan has had a passion for baking since the age of 15, but he never imagined that his side hustle would turn into a staple in the Wynwood dessert scene. Known by many as Fireman Derek, Kaplan opened his first bake shop in 2014. Eight years later, Fireman Derek's has customers traveling to Miami from across the country for a taste of their one-of-a-kind pies. Kaplan taught himself how to bake as a teenager by cooking everything from scratch with fresh ingredients. One of the first pies that he taught himself to make was key lime, which is still one of his favorites to eat and make to this day. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI A video history of Las Vegas implosions During the 1990s and well into the 2000s, Las Vegas gained a worldwide reputation for imploding older hotels and casinos to make way for newer and bigger resorts. In true Las Vegas tradition, the building implosions were an event — an epic show with each one appearing to out-implode the previous. Between 1993 to 2016, 13 major properties were imploded, and others were just torn down. Below are links to watch the biggest and most dramatic implosions along and near the Las Vegas Strip. The first memorable implosion of the nineties took place on Oct. 27, 1993, when the Dunes Hotel was brought down to make way for what was billed as the most expensive hotel in the world: the Bellagio. The implosion drew national attention. It was made to look as if the pirate ships at Treasure Island fired on the old hotel to set off the blast. KLAS-TV CBS 8 NEWS LAS VEGAS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
