Corpus Christi Fire Department announces new leadership appointments Two veteran fire officials were promoted into Corpus Christi Fire Department leadership positions Friday. Fire Chief Brandon Wade announced the promotions of Assistant Chief Doug Matthijetz to deputy fire chief, and Battalion Chief Billy Belyeu will now serve as an assistant fire chief. Belyeu's appointment is historic, as he becomes the first African-American asst. chief in the department's history. Wade said during their CCFD careers, Matthijetz and Belyeu have assisted the department in the critical areas. Matthijetz is a 33-year veteran of the department who most recently led the Support Services Division. Throughout his tenure, he has overseen critical areas such as training, facilities, recruiting, hiring, and risk management. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Officials say someone set fire to pile of trash in vacant San Antonio apartment Officials say a fire that prompted the evacuation of an apartment complex on the southwest side of town may have been intentionally set. San Antonio firefighters responded to the 2800 block of West Hutchins Place around 12:34 a.m. for reports of a structure fire. When first responders arrived at the building, smoke was visible coming from a second floor unit in the building. An SAFD Battalion Chief said that unit was vacant, and contained a pile of burning trash in the center of the unit. The officials said it appears someone intentionally set fire to the trash, then left the building before the fire crews arrived. The entire building had to be evacuated, but the residents were allowed to return to their units shortly after firefighters ventilated the unit of origin. No injuries to residents or any firefighters were reported. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Loop 12 reopens in Irving after separate deadly accidents, one involving fire department vehicle Loop 12 in Irving reopened on Sunday after police closed off part of it to investigate two deadly accidents. The southbound lanes of the loop were closed next to the exit for Irving Boulevard. Police reopened those lanes shortly after 10 a.m. According to police, the accidents that caused the traffic happened separately. The first one happened at about 2:30 a.m. and involved several vehicles. While first responders were working on that accident, another vehicle struck the fire department's blocker truck at about 4:30 a.m. Police said the driver in the second crash died from their injuries. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Temple home fire caused by ‘combustible substance' A Temple home caught on fire after a combustible substance was found in a plastic bucket with rags, according to Temple Fire and Rescue. Firefighters were dispatched Sept. 18 to the 804 block of North 13th Street, where crews found smoke coming from the attic of the home. Crews found the home to be vacant, and under construction. According to Temple Fire and Rescue, a defensive attack was made to knock down the flames from outside and protect adjacent exposures. The fire was quickly brought under control and crews reentered the structure to extinguish the remaining hot spots. An Investigation revealed the cause of the fire to be a plastic bucket containing several rags that had contained a combustible substance. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

NEWS 12 LONG ISLAND Arizona fire department gives an inside look at mountain rescues VIDEO: Arizona's hiking trails can be a hotspot for tourists, but hiking them in the heat of summer can be deadly. Every year, the Scottsdale Fire Department rescues nearly 400 people from hiking trails. To help spread awareness about these rescues and how important it is to be prepared, Scottsdale Fire and Arizona's Family teamed up to conduct a simulated rescue. Our reporter Mickaela Castillo and Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio hiked 2 miles up Tom's Thumb in Scottsdale. The rescue team then hiked up the mountain and conducted their rescue by putting Castillo in what they call a ‘Big Wheel.' To use this equipment requires five to six firefighters who put the patient on a gurney, strap them in, and then carry them down the mountain. KTVK-TV CBS 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) Wisconsin firefighter breaks world record for marathon time carrying 100-pound rucksack VIDEO/PHOTOS: Cory Asimus struggled to get to the finish line Sunday but giving up was never even a thought. The 33-year-old Freedom resident and Appleton firefighter was not only chasing a world record, he was also raising money and awareness for Project Vaspire 316, a cause he cares deeply about. Asimus finished the Community First Fox Cities Marathon Presented by Miron Construction in an unofficial time of 4 hours, 53 minutes, 7 seconds. He was more than two hours behind the overall winner, but in case you hadn't heard, the former machine gunner in the United States Marine Corps did it while wearing a 100-pound rucksack. His time, when it is confirmed by Guinness, will break the previous record by 10 minutes. "Everything hurts right now," Asimus said about 30 minutes after crossing the finish line.
