Memorial held for North Texas firefighter killed in California wildfires A North Texas firefighter who was killed in a crash while battling a wildfire in California was remembered Saturday for her servant's heart. The 63-year-old woman did not fit the typical mold of a wildland firefighter, but those who knew her said she was invaluable on the team. Inspired by her son, at age 58, former hairdresser Diana Jones decided to change careers five years ago and become a volunteer firefighter. Those who knew her said she was great at her job, because she always put others needs above her own. "She was enthusiastic about heading west, and said, ‘I'll see you in October,'" Cresson Volunteer Fire Department Chaplain John Knox said. When the battalion chief for Fresno, California, Brian Price, met Jones, who was a grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of one, he wasn't sure what to expect. DALLAS MORNING NEWS Fort Worth Fire Department Receives $9.55 Million Award Through FEMA Grant Program The Fort Worth Fire Department has been awarded $9.55 million through the FEMA "SAFER" grant program. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the "Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response" program provides funding to fire departments that will ensure that trained "frontline" fire fighters are available to the community. "As our first responders are handling unprecedented crises, the federal government should make sure they have every resource they need to keep Texans safe," Sen. Cornyn said. "I'll continue to do everything I can to support firefighters in Dallas-Fort Worth." The Fort Worth Fire Department said the federal financial assistance offsets almost $10 million dollars from the City of Fort Worth's budget, allowing for funding to be allocated to other portions of the City. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Alamo Heights family loses home of more than 50 years to fire It took only a matter of minutes for an Alamo Heights man and his father to lose a home that they had occupied for more than half a century. Mike Dyer said his 90-year-old father was the first to notice something odd -- a popping noise -- around 3 a.m. Friday. "We walked around the house, didn't see anything but we noticed that a breaker had popped on the electrical panel," he said. Dyer didn't think much of it until he began to notice smoke coming from the attic of his home located in the 500 block of College Boulevard. That's when Dyer called 911 and got out along with his father. "Within about 10 minutes, there was black smoke coming out of the attic, and then there were flames shooting out of the roof," Dyer said. The flames wouldn't quickly die even after firefighters arrived. They were still pouring water on the home more than three hours later. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO 3 Rusk County fire departments battle structure, grass fire on FM 1249 Three Rusk County fire departments battled a large fire on FM 1249 Sunday afternoon that included a large RV motor home, a shop, and about three acres of land. According to a post on the Crims Chapel Facebook page, the Crims Chapel, Kilgore, and Elderville fire departments responded to a report of a mobile home fire in the 6600 block of FM 1249 in Rusk County. When the fire units got to the scene, firefighters found that a large RV motor home, an adjacent shop building, and about three acres of grass and wooded areas on fire. "The fire was extinguished without incident, and no injuries were reported," the Facebook post stated. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER Man charged with arson after fire damaged Dallas townhomes A person has been charged with arson for starting a fire inside a Northeast Dallas townhome that damaged the entire complex early Sunday morning. Just after 4 a.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were called about a fire at the Holly Hill Townhomes, located in the 7200 block of Holly Hill Dr. Responding firefighters reported seeing flames coming from the roof of the two-story townhome. All residents of the complex were able to get out before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported. Fire crews were able to get the fire under control, but six townhomes were damaged. Three residents needed assistance from the Red Cross. Investigators found that the fire was started by one of the residents. He reportedly admitted to igniting "common combustibles" inside his townhome, and went to a nearby convenience store to call 911 and report the fire. KDFW FOX 4 DALLAS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Car chased by New Jersey cops nearly crashes into firefighters battling 3-alarm fire While evading police, a vehicle narrowly avoided colliding into a team of firefighters battling a three-alarm fire, putting a dramatic end to the chase and resulting in their apprehension Friday night, Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale said. The chase began when Paterson police stopped a sedan around 9:30 p.m. It's unclear what initiated the stop. The two unidentified suspects drove away on Fair Street and turned down Rosa Parks Boulevard where fire officials were removing their oxygen tanks, sitting and drinking water at the rehab tent. "This could have been catastrophic," Speziale told NJ Advance Media, explaining how firefighters quickly moved out of the way and no one was hit. The car attempted to make a quick left into a driveway in order to turn around, but at that point the suspects were surrounded by police, as well as officials from the Fire Department and Passaic County Hazmat Team. NEW JERSEY JOURNAL Ohio State To Study COVID-19 In First Responders With $10 Million Grant Researchers at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center have been awarded a five-year, $10 million grant from the National Cancer Institute in the National Institutes of Health to study the long-term, longitudinal impact of COVID-19 on first responders, healthcare workers and the general population. "This is one of the largest grants ever awarded to the College of Medicine," said Peter Mohler, chief scientific officer for Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and vice dean for research for the Ohio State College of Medicine. It will fund the Center for Serological Testing to Improve Outcomes from Pandemic COVID-19 (STOP-COVID) at Ohio State, a new Serological Sciences Center of Excellence. With this funding, researchers will learn more about the interactions among exposure risks, transmission, immune responses, disease severity, protection and barriers to testing/vaccination, with the goal of improving population health and clinical outcomes in the face of COVID-19. MIRAGE NEWS Firefighters rescue parent, child off Fort Funston cliff in San Francisco, officials say VIDEO: A father and his son were rescued off a cliff at Fort Funston on Saturday, San Francisco fire officials say. Firefighters used ropes and pulleys to rescue the toddler and his dad from a steep and sandy cliff just after 11:30a.m. The father described what happened, after they stepped off a marked trail, near the cliff's edge when they realized they were 70 feet below. "Just hiking around and you take one wrong turn, and the next thing you know, the sand takes away leaves your feet, and the next thing you know, you're halfway down the cliff," he said. Lt. Jonathan Baxter praised the father for knowing exactly where he was when he called 911. Lt. Baxter advises residents not to walk down the cliff even if it might appear safe. "Although this resulted in no injuries and a successful rescue, it could also in injuries or death," he said. "We ask that you please stay on the trail." Firefighters told ABC7 News a Highway Patrol helicopter was standing by just in case the father and son needed to be lifted off the cliff. Both individuals are uninjured. KGO-TV ABC 7 SAN FRANCISCO Overlooked in flawed 911 response to drowning in two D.C. area counties: A precise map As authorities in two D.C.-area counties investigate a flawed emergency response to a June drowning, new documents show the 911 center in Montgomery County had an automatically generated map that showed precisely where the call for help had come from. Emergency dispatchers in Maryland sent firefighters to the Potomac River after a teen called to say her friend had slipped underwater while the group was swimming in a "river." The caller went on to say her group had been in an "inlet" off the river and that they were in Virginia. It took 36 minutes for rescuers to reach the teen, 16-year-old Fitz Thomas, who by then had been pulled to a dock by his friends and a passerby who stepped in to help. Fitz, who was preparing to enter his senior year of high school, died. Emergency centers have long been faced with the challenge of responding to 911 cellphone callers who may not be able to provide a precise address or may be in an open space such as a park or along a highway. THE WASHINGTON POST - METERED SITE Arizona fire department fights mental health issues head on When a fellow Glendale firefighter in despair approached Ashley Losch on the job about struggles with mental health, Ashley found herself in an unfamiliar place. Firefighters are highly trained and highly skilled thinkers and problem solvers by trade. Not this time. "I didn't feel prepared. I didn't know how to help them in a way that would be effective other than listening," Ms. Losch, a Glendale firefighter, remembered on Sept. 15, during a break at Station 101, at 6851 N. 52nd Ave. "It just didn't feel like enough." Mental illness and the safest, most effective ways to support it among firefighters has been in sharp focus of late. A 2018 study by the Ruderman Family Foundation -- a non-partisan, philanthropic organization advocating "for and advance the inclusion of people with disabilities" -- revealed that firefighters across the U.S. statistically are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. In 2017, there were at least 103 firefighter suicides and, in contrast, 93 firefighters killed in the line of duty. DAILY INDEPENDENT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
