New Amarillo fire station number 5 complete, new features to improve response time VIDEO: Amarillo's new fire station number five is finally complete and today we received a first look inside the finished building. This is the last of three new fire stations in Amarillo being built. Fire station three and nine are the most recent new fire houses in Amarillo and this one will closely resemble those, but there are also some unique features this one will offer that others do not. The layout of the facility is specially designed in a way for firefighters to get to their trucks more quickly. "A special architect came in who specializes in fire stations. So, he was able to design it where it's more efficient, we can get to the trucks quicker. When a call comes in, we can get to the trucks faster than some of the way our old stations were designed," said Cody Snyder, PIO captain for Amarillo Fire Department. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO State fire organization names Corsicana's Henley ‘Chief of Year' The Texas Fire Chiefs Association announced Wednesday the recognition of outstanding performance within the Texas Fire Service. Corsicana Fire Rescue's Chief Paul Henley was named Fire Chief of the Year. The awards presentation will be be made at its annual conference, Tuesday April 6, in College Station. Navarro County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Meyers, who has worked closely with Henley over the past year, issued the following statement congratulating him: "Congratulations to our own Corsicana Fire Chief, Paul Henley, on this prestigious award and recognition as Fire Chief of the Year. This year has been a challenging one in many respects, including an increase of EMS call volume, dealing with a global pandemic and many public leaders performing many additional duties outside of job scope or function. CORSICANA DAILY SUN Technology helps prepare Texas State Technical College Paramedic students for almost any situation Students in Texas State Technical College's Emergency Medical Services program are trained to be prepared for almost anything they might encounter in the field. By using the iSimulate REALITi simulator in lab sessions, instructor Tim Scalley can program various situations for students to address. The simulator also can mimic the cardiac monitors of area EMS services for future paramedics to train on systems they will use at work. "There is a lot going on and a lot to remember," said Paramedic student Anthony Monaco, who works for the Stephenville Fire Department as a firefighter and an emergency medical technician. "The simulator allows me to get the kinks out while I am in class. I am able to work on what I need to do on the equipment we have available." BROWNWOOD BULLETIN - METERED SITE Investigators looking into 2 separate fires at same San Antonio apartment complex, fire officials say Two separate fires broke out at the same West Side apartment complex early Wednesday morning, leaving several of the residents displaced, the San Antonio Fire Department said. A vehicle fire was originally called in around 2 a.m. at the Bronco Apartments in the 8200 block of Bronco Lane, not far from Marbach Road and Loop 410. Firefighters said while they were putting out the car fire they also got a call for a structure fire at the same complex —- but two buildings away. Fire officials said the apartment that caught fire was a vacant unit. All the residents in that building were evacuated safely, firefighters said. Fire crews were able to put out the apartment fire quickly, but the fire did cause damage to several other units. Many of the people living in those units have now been displaced, firefighters said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Houston: Woman behind bars after spitting on and assaulting EMS worker It started as a traffic accident Monday, March 29. Harris County Constable Precinct 4 deputies responding to the vehicle crash, in the 16400 block of Imperial Valley and Sam Houston Pkwy. Deputies determined that 31 year old Rhea Lane was at fault. But, at the same time, deputies say she started to become combative and uncooperative. Moments later, EMS personnel arrived on the scene, so they could treat others involved in the crash, for their injuries. But, while the EMS team was doing its job, deputies report that Lane began assaulting one of the EMS personnel and spit on them. Lane was immediately detained. Deputies then discovered Lane had an open warrant for her arrest, in Fort Bend County. She was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail for the open warrant and also charged with Assault on a Public Servant and Harrassment of a Public Servant. Her bond has not yet been set. KIAH-TV CW 39 HOUSTON Arkansas pumper truck on loan to Texarkana Texas Fire Department: Four trucks under repair at once cause need for help With its fleet of firefighting vehicles down by four under repair at once, Texarkana Texas Fire Department has borrowed a reserve pumper truck from its Arkansas-side counterpart. A variety of mechanical issues including brake problems and a malfunctioning motor reduced TTFD's fleet of eight trucks — five front-line vehicles and three reserve — to four that are operable, prompting a call for help to the Texarkana Arkansas Fire Department, Texas-side Fire Chief Eric Schlotter said. TAFD was happy to help by lending one of its reserve vehicles, Arkansas-side Fire Chief David Fletcher said. TAFD is left with two of its normal three reserve trucks, one of which itself is in need of work. "That is kind of thin, but it's not so thin that I wouldn't help them out when we can, because you never know when we might have to reciprocate," he said. VIDEO: Fire truck hit by SUV, crashes into gas station on Detroit's east side A fire truck crashed into a gas station Wednesday after colliding with an SUV on Detroit's east side. According to Detroit police, at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday a fire truck was traveling westbound on E. Outer Drive near Dequindre Street with lights and sirens activated when a Lincoln Navigator crashed into the truck. Video shows the fire truck then collided with a Dodge Ram parked at a gas station and then a gas pump, causing a fire. Police say the driver of the Lincoln lost control of their vehicle following the crash and struck a pole. "You see people running ... I saw the fire truck run up on the curb, I saw it hit the gas station. People just started running like it was going to be an explosion," said witness James Dorsey. Three firefighters, the driver and passenger of the Lincoln and the driver and passenger of the Dodge were all taken to the hospital, where they were being treated for minor injuries. WDIV-TV NBC 4 DETROIT Fireboat stations receive major upgrades to tackle emergencies at California port PHOTOS: Renovations are nearly complete to Fireboat Station No. 15, the Long Beach Fire Department's 20,000-square-foot facility equipped to handle maritime emergencies at the Port of Long Beach, officials announced this week. The upgrades include advanced communications technology, a workshop where crews can maintain and repair gear, modern living quarters for a six-member team and a garage large enough to house a fire engine and a second emergency vehicle. From the outside, the most noticeable feature is the protruding red and white roof that will protect the station's 11,200-square-foot boat bay from adverse weather. This is the first fireboat station with a protective roof in the port's history, officials said. The facility will house the fire department's fireboat named Vigilance. Construction of the new fireboat station began in the spring of 2019, port spokesman Lee Peterson said. LONG BEACH POST NEWS 5 firefighters, EMS worker injured in blaze at New York factory VIDEO: Five firefighters and an EMS worker were injured in a large fire at a factory on Staten Island. More than 200 firefighters responded Wednesday as the blaze at 60 Davidson Street quickly grew to a 5-alarm fire around 2:30 p.m. The flames were mostly out by 5 p.m., but smoke could still be seen from several miles away. The fire was under control shortly after 7:30 p.m. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes. Officials say five firefighters suffered minor injuries and an EMS worker was seriously hurt. The FDNY says there were workers in the building when the fire started, but all of them have been accounted for. The cause of the fire is not yet clear. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK West Virginia fire department working to identify inequity in city neighborhoods One local fire department is doing much more than just putting out fires. Officials with the Charlottesville Fire Department have been working hard over the past year to identify inequity in city neighborhoods. CFD is split into three sections, one of which is the Community Risk Reduction Branch. Its goal is to prevent emergencies before they happen. "It's all about providing the right services to the right people at the right place and at the right time," said Deputy Chief Joe Powers of the Community Risk Reduction Branch. The branch is where the department tries to prevent emergencies, specifically in 19 city neighborhoods that are the most in need. "Using data we have both within the fire department and outside of the fire department, we can start to dive deep into those neighborhoods to tell the story of the risks and challenges that our city and residents are facing every day," said Powers WCAV-TV CBS/FOX 19 CHARLOTTESVILLE 'An interesting challenge': Project in Maine will use paramedics to improve rural health care access About 45 minutes away from Jackman on U.S. Route 201, cellphone reception drops. On this long stretch of road, surrounded by pine trees and the occasional pothole, the term "rural" takes on a new meaning. A logging truck passes by every few minutes, but other than that, it's quiet. Nestled among rolling hills is the small town of Jackman, made up of about 1,000 people -- maybe less. The downtown is lined by a couple of rundown homes and gas stations. On the left-hand side, is the only health care option in the area -- Jackman Community Health Center. Across the nation, the pandemic has taken a toll on health care systems, as they struggle to keep up with the surge in patients. That problem isn't specific to the coronavirus in rural areas, though. Over the years, the Jackman Community Health Center has had a difficult time recruiting full-time medical assistants and physicians. NEWS CENTER MAINE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
