Abandoned Bells home destroyed in fiery crash VIDEO: Early Wednesday morning an abandoned house in Bells was leveled after a car crashed into it, causing it to catch fire. Now, neighbors are coming forward to talk about what they witnessed. "Went outside and seen an inferno a fire from this house right here," neighbor Jaxon Cheeks said. Cheeks said he woke up just shortly after 3:30 Wednesday morning to the sound of a bang, followed by his front door slamming. Moments later he saw the house engulfed in flames. "I was dazed, there wasn't much we could really do," Cheeks said. Another neighbor, Sarah Delucco, lives across the street. She said she was awake when the car crashed into the house. "We heard someone coming off the road but we didn't realize that they had flipped until they had gotten right across the street and I ran outside with a flashlight didn't see anything until I shined across the street to the house," Delucco said. KXII-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV/FOX 12 SHERMAN First Black female firefighter paramedic speaks of her time in Corpus Christi VIDEO: Firefighters protect their community, help their neighbors and on their worst days, make friends that last a lifetime. This Coastal Bend Black Excellence focuses on the first and only African American female firefighter paramedic in Corpus Christi. "I needed a job and I used to be a secretary and I had two kids and I was a single mom," Deborah Johnson said. Deborah Johnson moved from Waco to Corpus Christi in 1975. When she had an office job, Johnson said a man joked to her about the Corpus Christi Fire Department hiring, and that she should apply. So she did. "Because I knew you know the hoses were big, they got a lot bigger but I knew that so I started running. I always ran a little bit, but I would run five days a week, six miles a day," said Johnson. KZTV CBS 10 CORPUS CHRISTI Community comes together to fight Andrews County wildfires Tuesday at around 3 p.m., fires sprang up in Andrews County. "The wind that was blowing and in an excess 30 mph rapidly built up and really started moving real fast, it was moving to the east from the west towards town," said Sheriff Rusty Stewart with the Andrews County Sheriff's Department. Shortly after that fire started, another one sparked up. "In probably about 45 minutes, a second fire started probably about 15 miles away from the first fire, so units were diverted from there to the second fire." said Stewart. Luckily here in West Texas, when you call for back up you don't have too wait long. "What the fire chief did, he ended up requesting mutual aid and we got the Odessa Fire Department over here and we also had the Gardendale Fire Department over here, and they battled on both of those fires to get those contained." said Stewart. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Vernon, Wilbarger General Hospital partner with American Medical Response to assist firefighters The city of Vernon and Wilbarger General Hospital are aligning its forces with American Medical Response to aid the fire department's staff shortage. "We are all a team the city, the county and the hospital, we are all a team. Our ambulance service covers the city of Vernon and Wilbarger County, so when we saw we were going to be short staff, we just immediately went into work," city of Vernon Mayor Pam Gosline said. It's been difficult over the last couple years for everyone around the world with job shortages being an ongoing problem, especially in the city of Vernon and its first responders. "I don't think it's unusual in today's healthcare world. [It's] very difficult to find people, to keep people, there's a lot of dynamic in all most specialties so those things happen," Wilbarger General Hospital CEO Thomas Siemers said. KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS Denton County: 911 dispatchers answer the call The phrase has been heard countless times on television shows and in real life. "9-1-1, what's your emergency?" Sure, the people who answer those calls handle life's toughest moments. But it turns out places like the Flower Mound Police Department's Telecommunications Center responds to more non-urgent calls than emergencies. While their work entails areas like fire, police, and medical, it also involves animal control, sewer, public works and water. "We handle all those calls to the town after hours," said Jennifer Arnold, shift supervisor for the First Battalion – those who work 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and a half-day Wednesday. "If people have a water leak and they need their water turned off, we get the call and send someone out to take care of it." THE CROSS TIMBERS GAZETTE Family of 4 displaced after water heater causes fire, San Antonio Fire Department says A family of four has been displaced following an overnight fire early Thursday morning, the San Antonio Fire Department said. The fire was called in around 1:15 a.m. in the 900 block of West Winnipeg Avenue, not far from Division Avenue on the city's South Side. Firefighters said a water heater caused an exterior fire that then made its way into the kitchen. The fire was put out quickly and without incident. Fire officials said the family's older sons live on the other side of the duplex. Their home had smoke damage as a result of the fire. Firefighters successfully rescued several pets from the duplex. They were not hurt. Damage to the home is estimated around $25,000. No injuries were reported. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Fire at California food processing plant prompts evacuations due to ammonia explosion risk A risk of explosion and toxic smoke from a raging fire at a food processing plant in south Salinas has prompted the Salinas Fire Department to begin evacuating nearby residents. The evacuation notice is for the areas near the fire -- at the Taylor Farms Processing Facility -- between South Main Street, East Alisal Street, Alisal Road and Harris Road. The order is due to the potential for an explosion and hazmat plume of ammonia that can change the impacted areas based on shifts in wind direction, according to a 2:19 a.m. news release from city officials. The blaze has now closed four nearby elementary schools, city officials announced shortly after 5:30 a.m. -- Lincoln Elementary, Monterey Park Elementary, Sherwood Elementary and Los Padres Elementary. Nearly 100 firefighters from 22 fire units across Monterey County are reportedly on the scene battling the four-alarm blaze, which started shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Pennsylvania Ambulance carrying powerful antidote There's a big red bag on board the Special Operations vehicle for Pennsylvania Ambulance, and it's not just extra medical supplies. Bruce Beauvais from Pennsylvania Ambulance says every time they respond to a fire, this kit will go with them. Inside is equipment to check for carbon monoxide levels in a victim's bloodstream and the air around them, along with an antidote for hydrogen cyanide poisoning, which can happen when you inhale too much smoke. "We had an idea of what it was for, but we didn't realize that it had a good implication for use in structure fires. We thought maybe for chemical fires and stuff like that, but we what we didn't realize was all the different types of chemicals that burn, and modern-day furniture and modern-day flooring that actually pose a greater issue than, say, a chemical fire, just a regular structure fire, so we thought it's a no-brainer," Beauvais said. WNEP-TV ABC 16 SCRANTON Virginia is the only state that doesn't cover work-related injuries that occur over time John Orndorff says he's an adrenaline junky - that's one of the reasons he became a firefighter more than 17 years ago. But being a lieutenant at Frederick County Fire and Rescue in Winchester, Virginia, means some days are a little less high octane. "We have an elderly community back here behind us that we service," Orndorff says. "One lady back there is a diabetic and I physically sat down and had dinner with her twice because her sugar was low." It wasn't a hard fall or building collapse that caused Orndorff's back injury. It was a combination of hauling 100 pounds of protective clothing and gear and lifting elderly neighbors who had fallen that caused the discs in his spine to deteriorate. "The continual stress of picking stuff up, it just builds and builds," Orndorff says. VIRGINIA PUBLIC MEDIA Several Colorado fire agencies first in the state to have integrated dispatch system VIDEO: The difference between a click and a call matters in a dispatch center, and before April 5, dispatchers at the Thornton Emergency Communication Center had to call other agencies to be able to dispatch them, instead of seeing in real time where they were, and clicking to send them. "So it could take up to one to two to almost three minutes sometimes, depending," said Brandi Seaton, the Communications Center Supervisor. The difference between one and three minutes in her job, she says, is "a life." But those extra steps went away when the new system, called the CAD to CAD Project, went live. "And it just saves so much time for us in here, and stress," Seaton said. Thornton Deputy Fire Chief Steve Kelley has been part of a team working on this integrated dispatch system for five years. KUSA-TV NBC 9 DENVER COVID remains a public health emergency for now, says WHO and Biden administration The World Health Organization and the Biden administration are both saying that COVID-19 remains a public health emergency, even as global deaths from the virus have reached the lowest levels since March 2020. Both the WHO and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services first declared COVID-19 a public health emergency in January 2020. More than two years later, the pandemic situation has improved, but global health experts believe the virus is still a major health threat. More needs to be done before the WHO can lift this designation, the organization's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday during a press conference. "Some countries are still witnessing serious spikes in cases, which is putting pressure on hospitals. And our ability to monitor trends is compromised as testing has significantly reduced," he said.
