Three Firefighters Injured in Hood County Fire VIDEO: Three Hood County volunteer firefighters were injured after a fire started Wednesday, officials confirm to NBC 5. The first firefighter suffered burns on 10% of his body, including his arms and face. He was flown to Parkland Health Burn Unit in Dallas. His condition is unknown at this time. Two others were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion and are both recovering. The fire started north of Tolar and quickly grew in thick oak and juniper brush. Local volunteer firefighters responded and additional crews from surrounding fire departments joined to help Tolar FD. As of Wednesday evening, the fire is an estimated 450 acres and 20% contained. Crews continue to respond and are building containment lines. Three fire bosses have dropped water on the fire to slow progression in the area. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Houston firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2013 remembered in coloring book VIDEO: May 31, 2013, was a day of heartbreak for the Bayou City. "It's something that's near and dear to all of us firefighters. It's the worst day we ever had in the Houston Fire Department," said Chris Hill, HFD District Chief in charge of cadet training. A total of five firefighters died while battling a blaze at the Southwest Inn at 6855 Southwest Freeway. Firefighter Anne McCormick Sullivan had only been with the fire department a few weeks. "She wanted to be a Spice Girl when she was little," said Mary Sullivan, Anne's mother. In high school, Anne decided she wanted to serve her community. "Prior to her coming to Houston Fire Academy, she logged over 5,000 volunteer hours at two different community fire departments," Sullivan said. An award named for Anne is given to outstanding cadets, and it doesn't go to the strongest smartest or fastest. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON ‘This is unprecedented': Arsonists responsible for 42 fires in about 3 months time, Atascosa County Sheriff says A serial arsonist is on the loose in Atascosa County, according to the Atascosa County Sheriff. Investigators believe the person or people are responsible for 42 fires in roughly three months time. They say the arsonist could be connected to other fires as well, but they just don't have enough evidence. "It's the definition of a serial arsonist, I've seen similar cases in the past of a serial arsonist, but here we're up to 42... this is unprecedented," Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said. Soward said the 42 fires occurred between April 21 and July 26 and stretch across a 25-mile radius around the county. He said the majority are just grass and brush fires, but a handful have been by homes and structures. Luckily, no homes have been lost. "It's very concerning and I think we're very fortunate that we haven't had a fire that's completely gotten out of control for an extended period of time," Soward said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Multiple homes evacuated due to Hermosa Fire in Wimberley PHOTOS: Several homes were evacuated Wednesday evening as multiple firefighter crews responded to an "active wildland" fire in Wimberley. At 9:55 p.m., the Texas A&M Forest Service tweeted the fire, being referred to as the Hermosa Fire, was an estimated 35 acres and 5% contained. At 11:38 p.m., the Hays County Office of Emergency Management posted additional resources from the state will arrive Thursday morning to help suppress the fire. The fire is in the River Mountain Ranch area between Bluff View and the Blanco River off FM 3237 (Old Kyle Road) and River Mountain Road. Roadways may be closed in nearby areas, including Bluff View, Wimberley Fire Rescue said on Facebook. Evacuations were issued within a one-mile radius of the River Mountain Ranch neighborhood. At least eight homes were mandated to evacuate, and 45 families voluntarily evacuated. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Firefighters battle blaze in Frisco, officials say VIDEO: Firefighters battled a large blaze along Legacy Drive in Frisco, according to officials. Frisco Fire Department says crews were called to the area at Legacy Drive, just north of Stonebrook Parkway around 3 p.m. Wednesday. Frisco FD along with Plano, Little Elm and Prosper crews teamed to get the fire under control, which burned at least 70 acres. As of 5:15 p.m., the fire is contained. No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported. Frisco FD said the northbound lanes at Legacy and Stonebrook, and the southbound lanes at Legacy and Cotton Gin were both closed. Also, Cotton Gin eastbound and westbound from Legacy to the DNT were closed, the department said. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. VIDEO: Fire Burns Commercial Building in California Intense flames tore through the loading zone of a commercial building in Ontario late Wednesday, forcing employees still in the building to run and leaving firefighters searching for the cause of the fire. The Ontario Fire Department responded to a fire burning near the external area of a building on Proforma Avenue, near the Ontario Airport, at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday night. The building belongs to a business called U.S. Merchants, and the designed manufacturing and distribution facility was filled with plastic materials and wooden pallets that fueled the fire. Flames reportedly first erupted in a truck yard on the west side of the building, before they spread to the interior of the building. The fire quickly escalated to a two-alarm, then three-alarm fire, with 64 personnel in total on scene to fight the flames. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES Immersive virtual reality brings Colorado first responder training into the future VIDEO: First responders have used virtual reality to train for certain emergencies for years, but those simulations are usually limited to a screen and don't give responders hands-on experience. A new one-of-a-kind training center opened in Boulder, Colorado, to take virtual reality training for first responders to the next level. "How can we do better to protect not only the public but ourselves from the dangers that we're dealing with? This is really where it's at," said John Weaver, the assistant fire chief at the Longmont Fire Department. This center is a joint venture by the U.S. Department of Commerce First Responder Network Authority, or FirstNet Authority, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It combines virtual reality with real sets, props and obstacles. KMGH-TV ABC 7 DENVER Wisconsin firefighters found a creative new use for an old fire hose - it's the department's new training dummy PHOTOS: The Oak Creek Fire Department has a new member named HOSE-A. Made out of old rubber fire hose, HOSE-A, named in part by the community, is a training dummy firefighters can use during drills for various scenarios. Firefighter Aaron Krukowski said many departments donate old fire hose to area zoos where it's used to weave chairs and beds for animals or just hung in monkey exhibits. While this is the first hose mannequin in Oak Creek, the idea isn't original and came from a fire department in Arizona. "I actually got the idea from a Tucson fire department's YouTube channel," said Jeremy Fontanev, a firefighter in Oak Creek. "From there we tweaked a couple things to make it our own for our own training needs." About 300 feet of rubber fire hose was utilized to make HOSE-A. "It just starts out as a huge mess," Fontanez said. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON Stop Drop, Roll: New York City Fire Museum Teaches Importance of Fire Safety VIDEO: What's the first thing you should do in the event of a fire? The New York City Fire Museum wants to teach you. By collecting and preserving the history of the city's fire service, the museum aims to educate the public — especially children — on fire prevention and safety. The building alone is part of history, as it's a renovated firehouse from 1904. Walking through the museum, visitors are able to go over 10 exhibits, such as the 9/11 Memorial, tools and uniforms used on the job, and the fire-fighting apparatus. The museum also has a temporary exhibit, which runs through August, that honors first responders for working throughout the pandemic. (Just to get an idea of the amount of calls 911 received, there were 6,527 calls placed in one day during the height of the pandemic — the highest ever.)
