Smith County firefighters set to receive wildland-rated PPE VIDEO: With the increase of wildfires within East Texas, there are firefighters currently without the proper safety gear who are put at risk while out in the field. Assistant Fire Chief JD Smith says that the current personal protective equipment (PPE) that select firefighters currently have is used to fight structure fires rather than wildland fires. "It is not the best suited for the wildland environment. It causes heat stress on the firefighters in that aspect, and it makes it to where we can't work as long," says Smith. "We're outfitting them with the same personal protective equipment that wildland firefighters use all throughout the country day in and day out," says Smith. The initial price of the PPE gear was $230,000. After discussing that this price was out of their budget, the board agreed on a set amount of $105,000 that will come from contingency funds. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Woman rescued from car moments before it's swallowed up by sinkhole in El Paso VIDEO: A woman trapped in her car at an intersection in El Paso, Texas, was rescued on Tuesday evening just moments before her vehicle was mostly swallowed up by a sinkhole. Video filmed by Enrique Duenas-Aguilar, the public information officer with the El Paso Fire Department, shows the small white sedan submerged and sinking in water on Tuesday at an intersection in the city. As some bystanders and firefighters appear to use tools to keep the backend of the car somewhat above water, others are seen pulling the woman out of the car's rear windshield. Moments later, the rushing water drags down most of the car. Within a few minutes, the car is almost totally in the sinkhole, with only the very back of the trunk visible above water. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Nearly 1,000 personnel battling over 115 wildfires in drought-stricken parts of the state More than 900 fire personnel have been battling over 115 wildfires in parts of Texas that have been struck by drought. THE CENTER SQUARE Multiple house fires across North Texas believed to have been caused by lightning VIDEO: At least three North Texas homes caught fire on Wednesday afternoon during a round of storms, and officials believe the fires may have been caused by lightning. The Frisco Fire Department said it responded to a house fire around 5 p.m. in the 1100 block of Chestnut Drive, near Lebanon Road and Main Street. According to officials, residents reported hearing a "loud explosion" and that fire crews arrived to find flames coming from the roof. The department said one firefighter was injured and transported to a hospital with unknown injuries. The home suffered "extensive damage," the department said. The department said about 25 minutes after the first fire, crews responded to another blaze in the 12700 block of Possum Kingdom Drive, which is near Legacy Drive and Eldorado Parkway. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS New Braunfels breaks ground on its seventh fire station New Braunfels city officials, council members, firefighters and stakeholders broke ground on Wednesday on what will become the city's seventh fire station and serve its rapidly growing east side. Construction of the $9.5 million, 15,000 square foot fire station, located on Farm-to-Market Road 306 near the New Braunfels Utilities service building's current site, is expected to take 14 to 18 months. The facility will house an engine, a medical unit, a quint with dual capabilities as an aerial ladder truck and a pumper, and include living quarters for a team of 13 firefighters. The station will follow the design concepts and layout developed for Fire Station No. 2, currently under construction. Designated as "Truck 7," the quint apparatus temporarily makes its home at Fire Station No. 6, located on Stone Gate Drive, near state Highway 46 West. NEW BRAUNFELS HERALD-ZEITUNG - METERED SITE McKinney Fire Department participates in mass casualty training First responders ran through mass casualty training scenarios at the Collin College Public Safety Training Center in McKinney. Firefighters and EMS personnel spent three days this week going through realistic scenarios that include active shooters, building collapse and hazardous materials. "This training is designed to allow first responders and healthcare workers to experience the chaos and stress of large-scale incidents while working together to discover ways to improve the response in the future," read a statement from McKinney Fire. "This is so much better than lecturing in the hall or reading a paper," said Keegan Bradley, McKinney Fire Medical Director. In the scenario, there were close to 30 volunteers who played victims. VIDEO: 1 employee hospitalized after massive fire engulfs Illinois recycling center Nearly 200 first responders are on scene after a five-alarm fire ripped through a Metro East recycling center. The fire was reported around 10 a.m. Wednesday on Fox Industrial Drive in Madison, Illinois. Heavy black smoke was seen across the area as flames shot out of the Interco building. Workers were inside recycling batteries, Madison Mayor John Hamm III said. A male employee was hospitalized after being burned by the flames. The severity of their injuries is unknown. "There were several explosions due to the hazardous materials and those materials are being identified at this time," said Matt Coppin with Metro West Fire Protection District. Around 11:30 a.m., Madison County EMA told News 4 they were sending out a Code Red for a shelter in place order around the burning building. It is not known how long the order will be in place. KMOV-TV CBS 4 ST. LOUIS Related with Video: One injured in Illinois warehouse fire ‘Getting harder and hotter': Phoenix fire crews race to save lives in America's hottest city PHOTOS: The 911 call came in about an elderly man who had fallen outside a storage facility in central Phoenix. The fire crew, who are also paramedics, found 80-year-old Noel laid on his back on the concrete ramp under direct sunlight; he was weak, thirsty and very hot. Noel, an Englishman with diabetes and hypertension, had been moving furniture when his legs gave way. His core temperature was 104F – dangerously hot. (The typical range for a healthy older adult is 97 to 99F.) His blood pressure was also very high at 242/110, and his pulse was racing. Noel had been lying on the piercing hot concrete ramp for about 45 minutes. A firefighter wrapped an ice cold towel around his neck and inserted IV lines into both arms. It was 3.30pm and the outside temperature hovered above 100F – below the average for the time of year in Phoenix, but several degrees hotter than the previous week when monsoon rains cooled the city. THE GUARDIAN New report from Maryland agency details what happened on day of fire that killed 3 firefighters VIDEO: January's deadly vacant rowhome fire along south Stricker Street rocked Baltimore City to its core. Three firefighters were killed and another was injured that day, and since then the cries for change have grown louder. Now, a new report from Maryland Occupational Safety and Health reveals the possible failures that may have put the firefighters in danger. Several firefighters who responded to the fire told investigators they were not aware the vacant home was damaged in a fire in 2015 which left several firefighters injured, and if they'd known they may have approached it differently. One of the men who responded to January's fire told MOSH he had actually fallen through the floor in the home in 2015. However, MOSH says dispatch never advised the firefighters, and an old system where x's were placed on buildings to warn firefighters of damage no longer existed. Councilwoman Odette Ramos says Code X-Ray began in 2010 but didn't last long. WBFF-TV FOX 45 BALTIMORE Wisconsin fire department celebrates 150 years of service VIDEO: After 150 years of service the De Pere fire department has gone through many large changes. Despite these changes, the department uses its history to prepare for the future. "We always grow from the big events we have to get a little bit better," said battalion chief Brett Jansen. A technological advancement that is a far cry from the humble beginnings of the fire department back more than a century ago. There's been several large fires in De Pere that have molded the town's history. Jansen said the last major one unlocked a new method to battling fires in downtown. "It allowed us to put in dry hydrants which connect right to the river," said Jansen. Those hydrants allow the department to take water from the Fox River and pump it up to an active scene. Gone are the days of simple coats and boats. In their place, firefighters have full structural gear that Jansen said has helped them save countless lives on the job.
