Pharr strikes deal with police and fire unions The city of Pharr and the police and fire unions finally put pen to paper Wednesday afternoon after reaching collective bargaining agreements in July. Members of the city's police and fire departments gathered on the second floor of the Pharr City Hall for a signing ceremony. "We are very excited to have these agreements with both of the organizations," Mayor Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez said during the ceremony. "You guys are the heart and soul of our public safety. You all keep us safe, so we're very excited about that. It's always a little tense during negotiations, but it's ok. From our perspective, and the commission's perspective, and the city manager's office, we always will do what's best for your organizations because we know you guys put your lives on the line every day." MY RGV NEWS Veteran Waxahachie firefighter loses tough battle with COVID-19 Veteran Texas firefighter Loyde Wayne Junkin, for whom a prayer vigil was held here that drew firefighters from a dozen departments, has lost his battle with COVID-19. Junkin contracted COVID-19 in mid July and was admitted to the hospital after going to the emergency room on July 27. He died at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday. A week before, on Aug. 8, Central Texas firefighters gathered in the parking lot of Waco ISD Stadium for a prayer vigil for Junkin, who served with the Waxahachie Fire-Rescue Department from 1985 to 2003 and later traveled around the state sharing his knowledge through the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service's fire school. Many of the firefighters who attended the Waco vigil had either worked with Junkin, or been trained by him, Beverly Hills Fire Department Capt. Jeffrey Henderson said. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO 1 dead, 1 injured after house fire in Lockhart One person was killed and another injured in a house fire late Tuesday night in Lockhart. The City of Lockhart said that at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Lockhart Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 800 block of Mora Street. One person was confirmed dead. The fire has been extinguished and investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office were on the scene as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The cause of the fire is under investigation. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Annaville Fire Department educates COVID-19 patients on at-home treatments The Annaville Fire Department is taking steps to educate the public on at-home COVID-19 treatments to prevent hospitalizations. "We're just trying to get people to start the care at home and then if we need to move to something else, if they feel like they need to call 911, they're more than welcome to call us at any time," says Kevin Ramon, EMS Lieutenant with Annaville Fire Department. Ramon says it's not uncommon for them to receive calls from those who have not yet tried to treat their symptoms themselves. "We just would like to leave ourselves the opportunity to help other people that are having things such as heart attacks and strokes because those things don't stop because of covid," says Ramon. He suggests those with COVID-19 call their doctors for help as well. KRIS-TV NBC 6 CORPUS CHRISTI Austin firefighters help unload family's trailer after dad overheated A crew of Austin firefighters went above and beyond their call for duty when they helped a family unload their trailer after the father became overheated trying to do it himself. "It's really hot outside and we'll get calls for people that are dehydrated and overexerted themselves. This was that type of call," said Austin Fire Lt. Alex Vanegas. It was a typical summer day for the Austin Fire Department's Engine 28 A-shift crew this past weekend when they got a call that someone had overheated. When the crew of four arrived on scene, they met Jacentia Lewis and her boyfriend, both U.S. Army veterans, along with their 10-month-old baby boy who all just moved to Austin from Kansas. EMS was treating her boyfriend who had become overheated while trying to unload their family's U-Haul into their new third floor apartment. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters extinguish 2-boat fire in Florida; 2 injured VIDEOS: Firefighters put out a fire that engulfed two boats at a marina in Dania Beach. 7SkyForce hovered over the scene at 299 Lewis Lane, just south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Wednesday afternoon. The two boats could be seen fully engulfed in flames as heavy black smoke billowed from them. "We couldn't breathe in all the bad stuff," said neighbor Gayle Snow. It took 50 firefighters to fight back the intense flames burning on the boats on Dania Beach Cutoff Canal. "And one caught the fire, and then it caught the next boat and there was a big superyacht that was right behind them," said witness Tony Pereira. "They were lucky to get that out of there." Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue said the fire may have been the result of the work being done on one of the boats. WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI Retired FDNY Firefighter Says Old Helmet Brought Him Back To South Bronx Fire House One Day Before 9/11 This year, we will mark 20 years since the Sept. 11 terror attacks. For one retired firefighter, the tragedy and a firefighter's helmet called him home to New York to help. In the heart of the South Bronx is Engine 73, Ladder 42, and in the hearts of firefighters at the Prospect Avenue fire house are the heroes lost on Sept. 11, 2001. "What do you feel when you look around here?" CBS2's Jenna DeAngelis asked retired FDNY firefighter Jerry Sanford. "Oh, it's just, it just floods back to me, looking at the house," Sanford said. The last time Sanford was inside the fire station was nearly 20 years ago and he says it all "started with a helmet." "There's the helmet, 1914. This is kind of amazing," he said. Sanford was working as a public information officer in Florida when a fire chief there showed him the antique helmet with the number 42 on it, which Sanford recognized. WLNY-TV 55 RIVERHEAD Alabama fire chief competes in Food Network's Guy's Grocery Games after devastating tornado Chief Justin McKenzie leads the newly-formed, full time fire department in Fultondale, and he's using flames in a unique way. A master of the grill, McKenzie was recently a contestant on Food Network's Guy's Grocery Games – a show hosted by Guy Fieri in which different cooks compete for prize money. "When I first got [the invitation], ‘I was like no way,'" Chief McKenzie said. After an EF-3 tornado hit Fultondale in January, he was invited to be a contestant on the show along with fellow firefighters for a special episode. "All this stuff has happened in the city… We had 260-something residential buildings down, 61 businesses affected – if not destroyed. There's a lot that I was worried about just for our city and residents," McKenzie said of the devastating tornado. WIAT-TV CBS 42 BIRMINGHAM Lack of data stymies efforts to address Maine's firefighter shortage Even when he works two consecutive 24-hour shifts, Chris Aberle rarely sleeps at the fire station. Sometimes he tries. If he is lucky, he might pick up a couple hours of rest. But lately his shift has been getting calls at night. "No one ever sleeps, you know, even if we had no calls from midnight to 8 a.m.," he said. "No one really sleeps because you're just waiting for that bell to go off." Twenty-four hour shifts can be exhausting, he said. Back-to-back 24-hour shifts are worse. "It's tough to stay two days in a row. Because you're like, if you've been up all night, I don't want to be here another day. It wrecks your body. It wrecks your body and trying to do it all over again the next day, you're like, ‘Here we go.' " Lately, Aberle and the other firefighters at the Biddeford Fire Department have worked extra shifts, which are first assigned on a volunteer basis. If no one volunteers, the fire chief informs the person at the top of the "force list" that they must take the shift. PENOBSCOT BAY PILOT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
