A 112-year-old San Antonio home was lost to a roaring fire VIDEO: Property tax records indicate 1231 Virginia Boulevard was built in 1910, when William Howard Taft was the president of the United States. Until Monday evening, the stately 3,792 square foot home was a favorite in the Knob Hill Historic District, according to neighbors. But now, the big white house that sheltered generations is nothing but a broken, blackened mess, flattened by a roaring fire that raced through the structure around 6:30 p.m. Ruth Bushman lives next door. She said several people were gathered on her front porch watching a lively lightning display as a storm rolled across east San Antonio. Bushman said a few minutes after they went back inside, they smelled smoke, looked outside, and saw the house next door was aglow, burning fast. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Nacogdoches City Council discusses renovating fire stations Nacogdoches City Manager Mario Canizares says the city is proposing to use certificates of obligation (COs) for the first time in 20 years. He explains the use of COs is another financial resource that government entities can use on repairs in their city. This allows the city council to make a vote to incur debt. Canizares said the decisions made will set the tax rate based off which projects they move forward with. The proposal includes renovations of parks, roads, drainage, and two Nacogdoches fire stations that need repairs. "The intent would be to relocate those two facilities into a brand new central fire station that can serve our community," he said. Cody Best is the president of the Nacogdoches Professional Firefighter Association and said the facilities have outdated infrastructures that are wearing down each passing year. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN Midland firefighter says thief stole trailer, tools while on shift A local firefighter is facing a big loss after a recent crime. Over the weekend, Shawn Van Meter was called to his firefighting duty with the Midland Fire Department. When his shift was over, Shawn returned to work as a handyman. But he discovered a thief stole thousands of dollars worth of tools, and a trailer, from his worksite in Odessa. Shawn is involved in the home renovation business. Most of his tools were inside the trailer when it was stolen sometime between August 21 and 22. A neighbor tells Shawn they last saw the trailer Sunday night. He is asking the public to keep an eye out for his stolen belongings. "I left my trailer here while I went on shift. I returned Monday morning and my trailer was gone," Shawn said. Shawn has been a first responder for 20 years. He has been with the Midland Fire Department for 16 years. KMID-TV ABC 2 MIDLAND Related: Firefighter’s stolen trailer found, Odessa Police Department says Lanes reopen in northwestern Dallas after fire at abandoned hotel West Mockingbird Lane has reopened after Dallas firefighters worked to put out a three-alarm fire at an abandoned building. According to a WFAA source at the scene, the westbound lanes of Mockingbird near North Stemmons Freeway were blocked off Thursday morning. Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) told WFAA that first responders were assigned at about 5:30 a.m. Officials said the fire was coming from the 12th floor of an abandoned 15-story hotel. No one was in the building, but there was still furniture and other things that could've easily caught fire. Authorities requested a third alarm to bring in more manpower. Over 100 firefighters and 25 heavy apparatus are at the scene. Firefighters reported the flames being put out by 7 a.m. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Bastrop County trains 16 volunteers to aid during community emergencies Sixteen residents from Bastrop and other Texas counties recently graduated from a federally approved Community Emergency Response Team training after volunteering 24 hours to learn basic emergency disaster response skills and putting those lessons to the test. The individuals who participated in the Federal Emergency Management Agency G317 Basic Introduction to CERT training took part in a disaster drill held at Bastrop High School facilitated by the Bastrop County Community Emergency Response Team to culminate the program. The training "empowers individuals with the knowledge necessary to promote resiliency in their community through preparedness, response and recovery," according to the national CERT mission statement. AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN - METERED SITE Port Arthur firefighters rescue dog from empty reservoir at water treatment plant PHOTOS: Cats may have nine lives but one Port Arthur dog appears to at least have two after he was rescued from an empty reservoir at the city water treatment plant Tuesday. Workers at the city's water treatment plant along Texas Highway 73 called the Port Arthur Fire Department after spotting the pooch at the bottom of an empty concrete reservoir on Tuesday according to battalion chief Jeremy Holland. Firefighters from Engine 6 responded to the treatment facility for the rescue Holland told 12News on Wednesday morning. The dog was at the bottom of the open reservoir about 20 feet below ground level Holland said. Photos released by the City of Port Arthur showed a firefighter climbing down a ladder and climbing back up carrying the medium sized dog. The dog was fine and was adopted by a staff member from the water treatment facility Holland said. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Patient dead, paramedic critically injured after apparent explosion in ambulance outside Hawaii hospital A patient was killed and a paramedic left critically injured on Wednesday night when an apparent explosion ripped through an ambulance outside Adventist Health Castle hospital. An EMT in the front of the ambulance was also treated for injuries and is in stable condition. At a news conference outside the Kailua hospital late Wednesday, a visibly shaken city Emergency Services Director Dr. Jim Ireland said it remained unclear what caused the ambulance to erupt in flames. "This is something I've never seen before," he said. Ireland said the patient who died was in the back of the ambulance with the paramedic, an eight-year veteran of the city. The paramedic has been transferred to the Straub Medical Center, he added. "It's just very hard to be in the situation where our team is the one who is injured," Ireland said. HAWAII NEWS NOW Why fires at California Bay Area's largest homeless encampment are so tough to fight When Oakland Fire Chief Reginald Freeman responded to a report of a fire at the Wood Street encampment in July, he first noticed the heavy, black smoke that had drifted into the air. The encampment had reported many fires in the months before, but this one was unusual — bringing traffic on the nearby highway to a standstill. Dozens of firefighters searched for a fire hydrant. Eventually one was found nearly 1,000 feet away from the fire. Under city code, fire hydrants should be within 500 feet of homes, but the encampment's location isn't meant to house people, so the hydrants are tough to reach. As firefighters doused the flames with water, propane canisters exploded, reminding Freeman of the time when a firefighter lost part of his jaw after a canister exploded at a different Wood Street fire. SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE - METERED SITE North Carolina firefighter hikes to Mount Kilimanjaro summit, waves fire department's flag VIDEO/PHOTOS: The city of Asheville, specifically Asheville Fire Department, is represented at 19,341 feet! Lindsey Glover summitted Mount Kilimanjaro last week, and when she got to the top, the Local 332 Executive Board member and senior deputy fire marshal proudly posed with her Asheville Firefighters Flag. "It was definitely challenging. It's one of those things, being in the fire service, we do a lot of things and push our bodies -- but this was something for such a long period that it was really challenging," Glover shared with News 13 on Aug. 24. "You also get this amazing sense of accomplishment when you finish it. I thought it was important to represent North Carolina, Asheville, Asheville Fire Department because it's such a big part of my life, and I probably, honestly, wouldn't be able to have done that hike without the support from the fire department, the training from the fire department." WLOS-TV ABC 13 ASHEVILLE Iowa firefighters train with mobile training lab VIDEO/PHOTOS: Cedar Rapids Firefighters underwent special training throughout the day Wednesday at the fire station on 1st Avenue. Situation in Motion or SIM-IA is a mobile education program from the University of Iowa to train emergency health care workers hands on skills that could prepare them for trauma and unexpected situations. Brian Rechkemmer, the SIM-IA coordinator, said the simulators have been around for a few years, but update when there is new technology. "I think it's great that we can go out and do this training for EMS providers across the state of Iowa," Rechkemmer said. "It's always been a passion for me because I think there's a lot of these rural departments that, like I said earlier, they cannot get out to do this training, so if we can bring the training to them, we can provide better care for the patients that we serve across the state of Iowa."
