Fighting fentanyl: North Texas mom teaches first responders about new treatments VIDEO: Fentanyl overdoses have claimed the lives of so many people in North Texas. It's a problem that shows no signs of slowing down as multiple law enforcement agencies have reiterated the dangers of this drug. There's a new treatment for combating fentanyl overdose many first responders are using called ZIMHI, which is administered like an epipen through the thigh and provides a stronger dose of naloxone into the body. You can get it through your local pharmacy, in Texas you don't need a prescription. Mother Callie Crow wished the responding officer used this technique when her 27-year-old son Drew overdosed on fentanyl in 2020. "Taken some pills that he had purchased from someone on the street and within minutes he was in cardiac arrest after taking those pills," said Crow. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH Wimberley EMS sees 30% call increase in 4 years, needs new ambulance Emergency calls for Wimberley EMS are at an all-time high. The system operates with two ambulances. "Sometimes both of our ambulances will be out on calls. We are having times where we don't have an ambulance in town," Director of Wimberley EMS Ken Strange said. In the past four years, there's been a 30% increase. "It's been very hectic for us. Some of our calls take 15 minutes to get there or more. And that's from here at the station," said Strange. More calls are putting more of a strain on their ambulances. "It looks new, but it does have a lot of mileage on it. It needs to be replaced. It's tired," Strange said of the ambulance. Strange said ambulances are supposed to last about four years. His are lasting half of that time. "It's close to a two-year turnaround now because we're putting so many miles on them," he said. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Kerrville Fire Department seeks donations for grant match For the first time ever, the Kerrville Fire Department is asking the public's help in raising funds to purchase a necessary piece of equipment as part of a matching grant from the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. The local foundation has offered a $30,000 matching grant to KFD for the purchase of a six wheel, Utility Terrain Vehicle, which will be equipped with a patient litter (similar to a stretcher) and fire pump, leaving KFD to raise the remaining $30,000 needed for UTV and the necessary accessories. "We now have the Kerrville Fire Department Foundation Fund set up at the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country," Maloney said. "This is going to allow us an opportunity to look at some of those budget gaps, where we can't purchase items we need in the department. One of those right now that we see is the 6x6 UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle)." HILL COUNTRY COMMUNITY JOURNAL Tarrant County ambulance service treating 9 people each day on average for flu-like illness in December MedStar has been busy this month. The emergency and non-emergency ambulance service provider for 15 Tarrant County cities told WFAA its crews are treating an average of nine people each day for flu-like illness in December. "We were shocked at how dramatically this has increased over the last three months," MedStar spokesperson Matt Zavadsky said. "The average age of the people calling 911 and requesting EMS for what is determined to be an influenza-like illness is 61 and the majority are male so far," Zavadsky told WFAA. Last year's data shows ambulance crews were treating an average of 1.4 patients for flu-like illness each day in December 2021. "We're not masking. We're not doing some of the things that we were doing perhaps two years ago, and our bodies might not have the same type of immune system that we had a couple of years ago because we haven't been exposed to some of these," Zavadsky said. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Kaufman Volunteer Fire Department increases training capabilities Kaufman Volunteer Fire Department has purchased a training door prop after receiving a $10,000 grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program. The department will use the training door prop to practice forcible entry scenarios. Using this prop will help emergency responders enter emergency situations faster and more effectively. KAUFMAN HERALD Amarillo Police Department discuss 2021 explosion, bomb plot investigation Amarillo Police said a would-be bomber had the ability to create the explosive needed to carry out his plan to bomb a local high school last summer. With help from the FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security, Amarillo Police and Amarillo Fire crews successfully thwarted that plan. On July 26, 2021, Amarillo Fire Department crews responded to the 3600 block of Lenwood Dr. after a call of a possible explosion. What they found led neighbors to be evacuated for more than two days. "Thankfully they were on top of their game. They noticed some things that were out of place. They noticed a hole in the ground where there possibly was a big explosion," said Cpl. Jeb Hilton with APD. "Our officers show up, the bomb team starts looking around and notices there are some materials here that are used to make bombs." KAMR-TV NBC 4 AMARILLO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Officials with Verizon and Verizon Frontline were at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix Tuesday night to showcase the latest tech. Fire crews are better prepared than ever when they head out on a call. Verizon has hundreds of trucks and equipment that can be deployed to natural disasters or wherever needed. The trucks use a satellite to set up a 5G network where service may not exist or is down. That can give first responders a way to communicate and access information quickly. Maggie Hallbach is the President of Verizon Frontline. She says technology has come a long way, even in the past ten years. "It's not just about voice communication anymore. It's about data and delivering that data to that first responder who needs it most," she explained. KTVT CBS 11 FORT WORTH San Francisco Firefighters Risk Cancer Every Day—Even Their Jackets Are a Threat San Francisco firefighters fear the "Cancer Sniper." It's how they refer to the deadly disease that struck down many of their comrades. "You kind of expect, in the back of your mind, to get hit," said fire department Battalion Chief Matthew Alba. "I didn't expect to get hit at such an early age, but I did." Alba was just 43 when doctors discovered he had a cancerous brain tumor, and two years later, he's still living with the disease. This morning, the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation sponsored a department-wide event to screen members for signs of cancer. The event was spurred by a chronic problem for the San Francisco Fire Department, along with departments across the country: Their members keep getting the deadly disease.
